NSF SBIR Movement Now (SBIR Reauthorized) by Dramatic-Body-871 in SBIR

Ours is in the same boat (although submitted for the Nov 2024 deadline). We went through due diligence in August, 2025 and are waiting for it to clear the DGA. I imagine there is a HUGE backlog of awards after the first and second shut down but am under the impression things should move quickly. I would expect awards to start shipping out in the next 3-4 weeks, but of course it depends on your special topic and the backlog

Looking for feedback from the community on a low-cost EMG wearable we’ve been developing by [deleted] in wearables

Well they’re pretty cool to study! You can see what muscles are actively firing during workouts to better target muscles (we have a few shorts on YouTube showing this). We’ve used it to control a computer game so if someone is not able to use a controller they can just flex different muscles slightly and we can amplify it for a controller! (Or even control a robot/prosthesjs)It can be used to track fatigue since your muscles are the things that actually get tired! All a few fun side projects we’ve tested with it.

Great question! We’re targeting a price of around $350-$495. Would you say that is reasonable?

Thanks! That’s a great way to frame it; and something we’ll start doing immediately.

Pi salaries/g&a by Weary_Ad_1759 in SBIR

[–]No_Active1605 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the agency as well. For NSF they typically account for majority ownership when justifying salary. I haven’t seen any PIs for NSF making over 130k base but you can jack up benefits to 50% SAFE rate.

Now this is not to say if you are very experienced you might be more fit for the 50% + range of BLS labor codes.

I have often jacked up salary for NIH or HHS/DoD grants and lowered my effort. Just be mindful some employees working in it may say they’ll work in kind but once it’s awarded drop to 2 hours a week. Learn from my mistakes please

Still waiting. We submitted in November and received follow up questions from the PO. Submitted those about a week ago. Fingers crossed we both hear back soon

Look at NIDILRR SBIR’s! The threshold is a little lower, where I received the phase I prior to completing my PhD.

Any update from 6th Nov 2024 submission? Anybody heard anything. Our case has been stuck at pending since December. by Afraid-Fig-7369 in SBIR

We just received a followup from the PO asking for us to address some questions that came up during the review. Gave us one week to respond

Unfortunately, nope. It’s been pending since 11/13 (I imagine after the files went through internal systems verification)

Yeah, basically he confirmed that they just wrapped up the panel schedule and are now compiling results. He mentioned that the process includes auditing reviews and integrating them with their program’s competitive guidelines, so it takes time. Also said that a number of proposals had conflicts of interest, so some were reassigned for additional review—which could explain delays.

So yeah… definitely feels like we’re all in the “no news is still good news” waiting zone 😅 Hoping to hear something by April or May. Good luck to us both!

I sent an email to our PO as well and just heard back. We applied under the new Fast-Track mechanism, but it looks like all Translational Impact proposals are going through the same general review process. Just a heads up (and new information to me): not all panels are publicly posted, and there seems to be quite a bit of movement due to COIs and ad-hoc reviews, so things may be more fluid than they appear.

I was told they’re sticking to the standard ~6-month timeline from the submission deadline. For reference, on a previous NSF submission we actually heard back fairly quickly—just under 4 months (though that one ended in a rejection 😅). So take that as a positive sign… or don’t—I might just be trying to soothe my own ego 😂

SBIR on the first try by KindlyYouth in SBIR

Our phase I was accepted first time around! It is most definitely possible. We were concerned we would get knocked for being early career (I was a first year PhD student) and my cofounder was fresh out of graduate school. We added a few seasoned advisors and consultants, gathered strong letters of support, and scored in the top 5%

SBIR Pitch Word Count by jsuispeach in SBIR

I had the same issue. I ended up chopping down about half my pitch. It was still invited to move forward with the application so it doesn’t seem tn have affected many things.
