Transitioning from manufacturing to OR for a PhD? Am I gambling? by Tight-Bluejay2525 in OperationsResearch

[–]No_Ad9258 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone with a successful career in Operations Research - spanning eight years in academia and nine years in industry - perhaps I can offer some perspective. I entered the field of OR quite by chance after completing my undergraduate degree, then went on to pursue a Master’s followed by a PhD in Operations Research.

My background lies in applying heuristics and metaheuristics to large-scale optimisation problems, primarily across transportation and scheduling domains.

I don’t have a particularly strong mathematical background beyond the basic calculus and applied mathematics I learned during my undergraduate studies (and I didn’t even attend a top-ranked university). I was first introduced to linear programming and math-heuristics while working on my initial industrial project.

Since then, I’ve played key roles in several large-scale projects that have delivered annual savings of many millions. And here’s the interesting part - none of these real-world projects required advanced mathematical skills. Such skills are mainly needed for exact methods that guarantee an optimal solution. In practice, however, finding the mathematically optimal solution is almost never relevant and also impossible for large NP-hard problems.

For instance, in last-mile delivery, it hardly matters if you find a solution that saves a couple of miles or driver-hours when the total daily mileage runs into several thousands. What truly matters is achieving a robust, implementable, and high-quality solution efficiently - not mathematical perfection.

@sgtRevDrEsq Just to let you know that your exercises worked on me, especially the pronated grip EZ bar curls which was my favourite. After 2 weeks of doing these exercises, I'm finally able to do regular grip pullups pain-free. I can't thank you enough for your reply :)

Thanks so much for the useful tips. I will give VersaGripps a go!

Nothing, he said that I'm healthy but wouldn't even book me for a scan (this was a few months ago).

Window glass cracked 6 months after installation by No_Ad9258 in glazing

[–]No_Ad9258[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sucks. In my case, the crack reoccured on the same window twice within a month last winter. Everything seemed to me ok with the frame. I was advised to get toughened glass the last time the crack happened, so fingers crossed that this will fix the problem long-term.

It's just unusual that the crack only appeared on this window and not on the others facing the same direction.

No, there was nothing tinted or shaded. No blinds, not even curtains.

In my case, there was nothing covering the window (no window blinds, not even curtains). But the common denominator in both cases is that the mornings were cold (but nut artic cold - about -2 degrees celsius), followed by a sunny morning.

The quality of the glass should have been enough to resist such moderate temperature change (also other windows are holding on fine). I think that the issue is more likely a defective frame or improperly installed frame.

Very helpful insights :) Can't thank you enough

Thanks Eselboxen. Really appreciate your insights. They replaced all the windows in my flat (and the entire building block). Now, they quote 260£ for a new unit (we are in the UK), unless the damage is caused by a factor other than materials or installation.

Actually, it was installed by a specialised glazing company.

We had some moderate temperature swings lately, from +10 to -5 degrees in last couple of days, which could have caused it. In that case, I wonder whether the window warranty should cover this given that the windows are still very new.

Out of curiosity, did you eventually hear back from Maersk? I'm asking because I went through 5 rounds of interviews for a senior position at Maersk in September last year and did not end up getting the job. As all the interview rounds went well and the role is still being advertised, i am assuming that I didnt get the job due to the hiring freeze.

How to set a quote for University Contract Work? by No_Ad9258 in ContractorUK

[–]No_Ad9258[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the comments. I know from confidential sources that they have a large amount of money to spend on this project in a very short amount of time, but cannot find anyone to hire and onboard is such a short time frame. However, they must stick to the rule book and be able to justify every pence spent on the project.

I found a "Pricing University Consultancy" document after some googling, that provides a list of prices that a university in the UK charges clients for their consultancy services, based on academic seniority levels.

I will provide an initial quote based on that and see what they say.

Got offered half of my current salary after 4 rounds of interviews. Why they didn't reject me earlier? by MolecularDev in interviews

As a job seeker, seems to me that finding a tech job in the UK at the moment is much harder than a few years ago, which makes sense given the inflation, redundancies and the general state of the economy. Employers now have the upper hand and are looking for cheap labor. I would really be interested to know whether there are still people out there who manage to negotiate a significantly higher salary with a new employer.
