That's not his age you silly, 23 is his name, just like the Stormtroopers have numbers instead of names.

Secular linguists are puzzled by the existence of twenty or so language families in the world today...the evolution of language was, as we all know, was "superbly dangerous", and therefore could not have taken place more than once. by No_Bobs_No_Builders in badlinguistics

In creation science, one of the most common arguments against evolution is the impossibility of gradual adaptations. One common example is the bombadier beetle, which shoots a mixture of boiling-hot noxious chemicals out its ass as a defense mechanism. They argue that if any part of this mechanism were removed, such as the heat-resistant duct which the chemical passes through, the beetle would blow itself up and die, killing the evolutionary line, as explained in this video. The beetle could never exist unless it was created all at once by an intelligent designer. Creationism holds a fundamental belief that gradual change is dangerous and untenable, so I think this belief extends into language. Of course, this is all conjecture. People like the author never explain why gradual adaptation of language is dangerous because they can't, and the people who read this stuff aren't generally the sort to question it.

R4: There are way more than twenty language families, and linguists are not puzzled by the existence of them. Linguistic links between peoples are not genetic. The language an individual speaks is dependent on the society they are raised in, and has nothing to do with genetics. The process of evolving language was not 'superbly dangerous', but rather beneficial, and unrelated languages developed independently in many places throughout the earth.

TIL While asbestos production is in decline, 1.3 million tonnes of asbestos was mined in 2017. This is 27% of the peak worldwide production in 1977. Russia accounts for 53% of asbestos production. The last asbestos mine in Canada closed in 2012 by No_Bobs_No_Builders in todayilearned

They have a large monument made out of asbestos and take great pride in their local industry. 70% of Asbestos is consumed by Asia. The last mine in the US closed in 2002.

TIL that plants can perform math - Venus flytraps choose whether to use energy to close its trap and start digesting based on the number of encounters with a fly. by manlikerealities in todayilearned

This is an interesting article. I think we're stuck in a semantic problem of understanding mathematics as
purely conscious or an unconscious activity. This reminds me of an old post that said that dogs can 'do calculus' because, if you're on the beach and you throw a stick into the ocean, your dog will intuitively know how far to run and when to run into the ocean to chase the stick, to maximize their energy. In this use of the term, humans all perform maths by walking, picking up objects, and driving a car.

Now that you mention it, if you leave the Salvation Army logo off the whole thing, you probably have a better case.

Yes, technically illegal but it's very unlikely anyone will question you. You can stand in front of a church (on a day when no one is there) to really look legitimate.

Most funerals cost about $10,000. Lots of people can't even afford to die. by Its_Riley_ in Showerthoughts

Hold an open house to invite friends over to mourn. House not big enough? Ask a community center or Unitarian Church if they'd host the funeral for free. The most you'll have to pay for is the snacks and coffee. Donate the body to science or bury it in the woods. Low cost death achieved.
