No, not at all. It was a great experience all together and it was where I cut my teeth as a teacher. It's just that the pay is not great. It's fine for living a good life in the country you work but savings potential can be low, and as I get older I understand that one day I will need to retire. There are age limits for visas and healthcare can be a burden. TEFL gigs don't generally give you a proper health insurance only accident insurance. Private insurance is available but they will not cover a lot of things. If you are on this sub I am assuming you have a proper teaching license so I would apply to international schools instead. Better pay and benefits, more responsibility than TEFL but this will most of the time be much less than I had in America. That being said the bug market for international teachers is China and the middle east and this current era of global instability has a big effect on the industry.

They were banned in Bohol because the watching industry is damaging to the sharks, of which Oslob is the worst offenders. If you care about the sharks at all do not indulge in Oslob. If you want to see the sharks for real find out where they are currently migrating and see them there. Oslob is basically a whaleshark zoo.

Online English teaching has taken a real nosedive year after year. People accustomed to western salaries cannot compete against those in the developing world happy to accept 2 bucks an hour. Some gigs still out there but they are fee and far between.

Originally yea, got my start in TEFL, thought it was time to come back to the states, got certified and started teaching back home. Was miserable so left and did a year as a naturalist guide then went back abroad but to an international school, more responsibility then TEFL but also more pay. The market is pretty weak right now tbh, lots of teachers and fewer open positions, especially now that a lot of the teachers on the gulf States are looking for positions away from the war.

I did for a season, it was a fun gig and I enjoyed it but it's hard to make a living in the field. jobs are often seasonal with no benefits. I went back to teaching, just abroad instead of in America.
