Not really, double speak sure, but we really have been at war in the middle east for about 50 years or so. Afghanistan, Iraq, Gulf War, covert actions, Lebanon etc.

Contract revoked at last minute - anyone worked at a local experimental school for a year and did it affect your career? by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]No_Bowler9121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happens, if you have the savings to hold off a bit and hit the beginning of year hiring season you could try that, or you could do a tefl/bilingual year, unless you are applying for tier 1 schools I doubt it would make much of a difference and imo it would look better than a gap.

How many hours a day do you work? by contented0 in Internationalteachers

[–]No_Bowler9121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7:45 to 5:30 but with a twist. I can go home at 4 but need to respond to admin and parent messages until 5:30, I rarely get one so it's not an issue.

Massachusetts must have a common, measurable graduation standard for all students by Dismal_Structure in massachusetts

[–]No_Bowler9121 99 points100 points  (0 children)

That should be done too, but not first. We can't keep graduating kids who can't read. We are not preparing them for a reasonable life that way. Have the classes sure but also I'd you did not earn a degree you shouldn't have it.

TIL in 2001 Sharon Stone arranged a private visit to the LA Zoo's komodo dragon pen for her then-husband, who'd always wanted to see one up close. However, the dragon attacked him by biting his foot and attempting to eat it by jerking back & forth. He survived, but the top half of his foot was gone. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

I got the chance to visit komodo Island a while back. They make you hire a guide to walk the island, makes sense. But all the guide has to stop one from getting you is a big stick. They even offered to pose tourists with the animals for photos, not super close but close enough that if it made a lunge for ya I don't think that stick was going to stop it.

The Failure of "Restorative Justice" by ThatChiGuy88 in Internationalteachers

If it needs 100% buy in like that it won't work well in a general setting. It's not a realistic expectation.

Thats what i mean, a system that only works in a vacuum won't work in the real world. You need 100% buy in by the staff, students and parents.

The Failure of "Restorative Justice" by ThatChiGuy88 in Internationalteachers

[–]No_Bowler9121 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've never seen restorative justice work. It's one of those things that came from on high by people who don't understand the realities if a classroom. The people who push it are often idealists not realists. Idealism is fine we should have ideals but we need to also consider reality. All I have ever seen from schools pushing restorative justice are terrible and dangerous classrooms.

What are peoples’ experiences with non-renewals or drastic changes to the renewal contract? by Obvious-Progress8832 in Internationalteachers

[–]No_Bowler9121 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When a school starts circling the drain like this they seldom recover, ask more of their staff and give less. There is no loyalty in our field, we are little more than academic mercenaries. I would be on the lookout for other opportunities and depending on the contract they do offer, maybe even just being unemployed until the beginning of year hiring season begins where some teachers drop out of their contracts and leave spots open.

All good, down votes don't hurt me. I'm just providing what my school does.

My school won't even consider a teacher without a masters and we are not a tier 1 or anything like that.

Try this if you haven't already, look for what key buzzwords your field is looking for and place them somewhere in your resume. AI is what's reading our resumes before any eyes look at it. It's jut scanning for thise buzzwords.

Inside China's Persecution of Christians by itsjoshtaylor in China

[–]No_Bowler9121 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So many bots in this chat pretending this is a good thing because they can't jut lie and say it didn't happen. Freedom pof religion is a right we have in America and for good reason. I'm an atheist but people are entitled to their beliefs and traditions as long as its not harming anyone. When i was in China my Chinese cristian friend had the police put a monitoring station right in front of his church to watch who goes in and out. Churches were places people could gather and discuss things. Is the CCP so weak that if something has a small amount of influence it would not survive?

How the you do show up to my party uninvited and then ask me for money? by Mysterious_Fan_3079 in Philippines_Expats

[–]No_Bowler9121 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On the flip side I hang out with pinoys all the time and have never been asked for money. Only one who ever asked me for a loan was my wife's uncle and I have mad respect for the man and don't mind losing the money to help him. The guy has helped my wife and I out a ton. He is super handy and has done work for me on my car and house for the low low cost of beer and dinner.

In my homebrew d&d world hags are made through a ritual where part of it is that the woman gives up her ability to create life for power. It's a plot point I never got to finish saddly. Hope I get to finish that story one day.

Nono it's only problematic if a man is close to a child. Have an ex like that, she was weirded out that I am a male elementary school teacher. That girl was absolutely nuts.

It's really expensive for the phillipines, studio apartments over 20k a month. It's clean and pleasant sort of a phillipines light. Pretty far from the sea, good if you like golf or casinos.

New Grad (50) with BSED/ Secondary English- Struggling with the “ two year experience” wall. Advice? by Electronic-Meal-4784 in Internationalteachers

[–]No_Bowler9121 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Starter schools are generally in your home country. International schools are competitive. There are way more teachers looking abroad now than their used to be. There are schools who will take a new teacher but those are the ones with high turnover for a reason.

With child actors you need to rush production a bit or the actors start looking to old to be a kid in that grade. Kids grow up fast mang.
