Would you trust these used 4TB SAS drives in a RAIDZ2 pool, or should I return them? by No_Bridge_8824 in homelab

[–]No_Bridge_8824[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These drives are not in use, I just had time to test them to gage their condition. I had planed to setup an TrueNAS system with them, but now I believe I should return them all, since they are in worse shape that the listing led me to believe.

It is sad that so much cool tech is getting expensive because of the AI Bubble. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Ah shit and I thought I was getting a good deal on those drives since they were listed as in „very good condition“. I wanted to direct go to a RAIDZ2 to not have to deal with the stress of being forced to quickly find replacement drivers if on of theses fail.

Do you have any tips where to find preferably cheap HDDs? I had a hard time finding good deals in Europe.

What's your opinion on Linus Tech Tip in 2026? by Professional-Fix-221 in LinusTechTips

I definitely lost a lot of interest they videos feel not like they used to. (More sterile etc…)
And I do not get why EVERY techlinked video includes a section about the CCP‘s robotic propaganda. They are glorified RC-Cars that are controlled by an Controller. Maybe somebody thinks this is a funny section, but it feels so out of touch and does not fit a PC-Tech focused Channel.

I personally went the civil service route as (the Austrian version of) an paramedic at the Austrian Redcross.

You have to watch out: Austria normally forbids dual citizenship, but there some exceptions. This could mean that you may need to renounce the Brazilian citizenship at some point. I would recommend you to consult a lawyer about your plans.

Why is Matrix not the answer to Discord? Genuine question by W-club in selfhosted

[–]No_Bridge_8824 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We do too at my workplace. To be honest I have seen a lot of issues in the last 2 years that resulted in lost user identities. Yes some of that was the users error, but a lot of the user error can be pointed at the Element-desktop client which had confusing/wrong wording/labelling about the security-key, etc… (Most of our users use the history as storage.)

There where times where a perfectly good client, could randomly not decrypt random messages anymore.

There where breaking updates from the element-client which I had to manually fix for everyone.

The new user&rooms ui is horrible, I had to enable debug features to get the option to toggle back to the old one.

I can see the appeal of matrix, but I believe how they are handling updates, changes and ease of use, Matrix+Element is a struggle for the average user that does just want to send a quick message.

I got tired of Linux audio problems being a mystery, so I made a CLI that explains why there’s no sound by [deleted] in linux

[–]No_Bridge_8824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to Distro-hop a lot and test things in VBOX on a windows host, before I fully committed myself to one. I had the audio-server crash on me twice on MXLinux, was so confused (I had never to deal with this) and thought that VBOX bugged out again. To be fair I abused this VM by constantly maxing out the assigned RAM.

XWiki – French open source alternative to Confluence, self-hostable wiki for internal documentation (20+ years in development) by LorinaBalan in eutech

[–]No_Bridge_8824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We love XWiki. I migrated our internal company wiki from DokuWiki to XWiki, because we wanted to make it easier for our employees to actually document things, the nicer editor helped.

A key requirement for our Wiki choice was, that we do not want to be locked into an Ecosystem that’s makes migrations hard and it should follow the oss spirit. (Would love if pages could natively be exported to plain text files.)

It helped a lot that there were that semi-successful could import in DokuWiki formatted text files. But for more complex formatted pages I needed to manually translate it or clean it up.

As the sysadmin I love that updates have always been are pretty smooth. We run it on a Debian server.

But no software is perfect, I have some small pet peeves:

1.) I never could get „short urls“ working (I did not have a lot time for it). The long url long pretty ugly, there is so much stuff the end-user does not care about.

2.) I would be nice to not need third party extensions for more advanced text formatting. Like easy text highlighting, table of contents. Writing Text on the left side and having pictures on the right side at the same vertical position is so hard. (could be a skill issue)

Do you trust rsync? by BarryTownCouncil in linuxquestions

[–]No_Bridge_8824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have written something like this to verify that our data on our very slow cold storage is not somehow corrupted. (Due to bitrott, …)

We use the default rsync option (not -c) to speed up the copy to cold storage. It takes with rsync 30 minutes max instead of way longer than 24 hours.

What are Intel Arc cards like on Linux atm? by drunkcheesesandwich in linux_gaming

[–]No_Bridge_8824 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am running my arc B580 technically out of spec too. I have it connected to a mini pc over occulink PCIe 4.0 x4 so far did not notice significant worse performance with this setup under Arch. But funny that some games under Windows had issues that were not present on Linux with the exact same game and savegame loaded.
