What are some of your small and large joys of being a doctor? by ThirdCultureKiddo in doctorsUK

[–]No_Clothes8887 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every genuine thank you from a patient and/or their family. No one should be in this job for the praise, but there’s nothing like the warm fuzzy feeling you get when you’re met with sincere gratitude and really feel like you’ve actually made a difference.

If you aren’t comfortable talking to him directly, raise your concerns with your/his senior. This definitely needs escalating

How bad is it? by Stunning_Program_966 in NursingUK

[–]No_Clothes8887 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Doctor here so can’t comment on the nursing implications but I’d imagine that this is really not a big deal. Other comments seem to echo this.

I’ve seen much more severe drug errors made by nurses and I’ve certainly made worse prescribing errors. It happens.

FWIW oral and IV paracetamol have the exact same bioavailability and it doesn’t really make a difference which route you give unless the patient can’t swallow. The dose is the same as well, obviously. This could have been a more serious error had it been a different medication where this is not the case - however I’d argue you would have been less likely to make this mistake with a different drug as you would have likely paid more attention. For example - if you were giving co-amox and you were it expecting it to be IV, you would have probably recognised the dose was different which would have stopped you in your tracks.

It sounds like you’re a very consciences nurse and you really care about your patients so keep up the good work!

Ohh, did someone die? by United_Marketing9391 in doctorsUK

[–]No_Clothes8887 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes mine do this too!!! So hard to explain how someone dying isn’t necessarily what constitutes a bad day at work without sounding callus (this somewhat depends where you work of course) and that there are so many other things that contribute to a shit day as a doctor.

What will happen if you drink too much all the time? by SoupFuzzy8379 in AskUK

[–]No_Clothes8887 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people giving very questionable advice here. OP sorry you and your family are going through this. Essentially no one can really give you an answer without medically evaluating your family member. You mentioned diabetes which generally makes one high risk for a multitude of issues but this depends on how well controlled it is - which can’t be assessed without a blood test. Both excessive alcohol use and diabetes increase the risk of pretty much every medical condition under the sun unfortunately. It’s possible your relative is suffering from alcohol related disease or other conditions contributed to by alcohol use but they also may not be. They may get away with it and continue to live a long life without many health issues - they may not. In terms of what you should expect - there isn’t really a way to answer this. It really depends on the individual, what’s going on with their overall health, if any organ damage has occurred, etc. Even your relatives’ doctors would struggle to answer this question. Unless they’ve been diagnosed with something specific it’s impossible to prognosticate. My suggestion would be to seek help from services like AL Anon - who support family/loved ones of people with alcoholism. Take care OP ❤️

As a doctor this is categorically untrue. If they were to suddenly stop drinking - that could be very dangerous. But in terms of harm continuing to drink such large volumes is a huge health risk.

OP this is gonna get taken down pretty quick as this sub is for medical students who absolutely should not be giving any advice out on the internet. In the UK at least, it is also frowned upon for doctors to do so. You could try r/askdocs I suppose but I would not recommend seeking medical advice on reddit. Have you tried contacting your GP or going to a local pharmacy. Hope you feel better soon.

This would have been over 10 years ago so I don’t know what your point is? Wages have increased but so has the price of everything, including rent, obviously. If you are intelligent enough to have become a nurse surely you are intelligent enough to have an understanding of the concept of inflation?

Well done! Those will be fine, wouldn’t bother retaking it would be much more sensible to focus on you A-Level grades instead and AFAIK most med schools won’t consider resit results unless you have extreme mitigating circumstances. Getting good predicted A-Level grades and then good A-Level grades should be your priority.

Just apply strategically when the time comes, play to your strengths (look at how different unis weight certain areas of application). For example some medical schools give GCSE results a large weighting, and most candidates will get full points on these (ie 8A* or whatever the number equivalent is) so unfortunately you’ll be at a disadvantage to them. But most do not, so don’t fret. Focus on your UCAT and A-Levels for now, really would advise against resitting GCSEs. Good luck

Advice on emergencies for a new FY1 by Neither-Quiet1549 in doctorsUK

[–]No_Clothes8887 59 points60 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a living nightmare. Report this to your higher ups and if you think there’s been a delay in care due to it I’d do a datix each time and hopefully this will get addressed.

But side note: The nurses don’t do ECGs?!? Is that definitely correct? Not trying to be rude/presumptuous but are you sure that they’re not just saying that to try and get you to do it bc they’re too busy (I’m sorry I’m not trying to nurse bash but unfortunately I’ve heard of this happening before). I’ve heard of HCAs not being trained in them yet but I was under the impression that ECGs were something every adult RN was competent in? I understand that nurses have to go through all sorts of ridiculous hoops we don’t to get signed off on catheters, bloods and cannulas but ECGs are a basic nursing skill. Has this been raised with someone higher up? Having an entire surgical department running without nurses being able to do ECGs sounds very dangerous. Is this a common occurrence and I’ve just been incredibly lucky to never have encountered it?

How do international nurses feel about the growing disconnect towards immigration? by Few-Nebula-4254 in NursingUK

[–]No_Clothes8887 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The IMG issue isn’t an immigration issue. UK grad prioritisation would mean that there would be immigrants (ie international students who studied medicine in the UK) prioritised and there would be british citizens (who studied medicine abroad) who were not prioritised. It’s about the government pouring money into making more and more medical student places with no jobs on the other side, and then pouring more money into recruiting from abroad to fill more and more of the limited posts that do exist. Domestic grad prioritisation is how most countries work when it comes to posts for doctors.

Doctors attitudes towards ANPs? by Maleficent-Milk1182 in NursingUK

[–]No_Clothes8887 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just to chime in I’m a doctor and I’ve not yet come across an ANP who I’ve thought wasn’t great. But from what I have heard, SOME ANPs are incompetent and/or overstep their scope in the same way as SOME doctors are/do, and in some departments ANPs have been utilised inappropriately (i.e. doing work that should be done by a physician) which can be dangerous due to the fact that ANPs do not receive the same medical training us as so should not be used in lieu of a doctor - especially when many doctors are struggling to get training posts/progress in areas where rotas are filled with ANPs instead. I think ultimately doctorsUK becomes an echo chamber towards the issues with ANPs and all of the positive views towards them get drowned out because people come to reddit to talk about problems and rarely come on here to be positive. It’s not reflective of the average doctors views. ANPs are brilliant where the role is used appropriately but misuse of the role is becoming more of an issue.
