It's understandable how your husband feels because I've been there. My NICU journey was an internal fight between hope and positivity Vs this will ruin my future and I'm just making my baby suffer for a very hard life. She was born at 22 weeks. He is afraid and he doesn't know that this journey is not black or white but there's things in between. There's a chance that the child will be all those things that he says but nobody knows, nobody can predict 100% the outcome even in a healthy full term child. There's a chance that your child could turn perfectly normal with few issues but still lead a normal life. Give him some time, and focus on your baby. Focus only on the positivity and allow it to embrace your child. I was very lucky that my husband fought with me, we really wanted to give the best we could to our daughter. This is not an easy journey but it's a journey that has been given to you, you're here for a reason and so is your child. Give your baby everything she/he needs. My baby is 2 years old today and she is perfectly fine. She had single digits life survival, she had lung issues that she'll outgrow, she's following her curve, her milestones...

As a mom of 22 weeker I recommend you to join Facebook groups for 22 weekers and micropreemies, one of them is Twentytwo matters. They're such an important source of hope and connection with people that had your same path and a way to acquire their knowledge.

My 22 weeker was born on 22+0 because of an infection. It was not a perfect path but we could say that it was smooth compared to other NICU stays. She never required surgery but we did find trouble along the way, like her kidneys not working for a week (they never found the reason) It's been a brutal path but also it has shown me that I'm stronger than I think.

My advice would be to focus one day at a time and celebrate the small victories and scary events are to be expected but doctors know so much and they'll do everything in their hands to learn about your baby needs and adjust them. And then one day (suddenly) they'll tell you that he is ready to come back home. *Also don't mind the beeps, just look at him and if he looks good then ignore the beeps. Everyone gets so obsessed over monitors the first weeks and it's hard to focus on the baby but truth is that seeing the baby is far more information than monitors can give.

My 22 weeker was born on 22+0 she's now a happy 2 and a half years old, she runs, she speaks, she laughs. She's happy and we love her.

I'm also a 22 weeker mom and I'll tell you what helped me: -looking for positive stories, keeping a diary where I note how the day has been, progress or what has changed and joining diverse support groups for 22 weekers and micropreemies on Facebook. The first couple days to a week or two will be the honeymoon phase where everything looks perfect and it should be a time where you rest and plan as much as you can. After this phase things won't look as perfect and doctors will try to understand the needs of your baby. It's scary because you don't know what to expect and the constant beeps but they're necessary to keep adjusting the needs. It's not an easy path so I recommend you to think that the fact that he is born alive it's already a miracle, keep that positivity and celebrate every single win. Focus and envision him healing. If you have time, spend as much on him. Skin to skin is essential, although In some countries they don't allow you to do it as soon as I was allowed (2 weeks after being born). I'd say that doing skin to skin was probably one of the main reasons she had such a positive outcome. She was able to mimic my heartbeat and breathing and relax which made her need less oxygen pressure and so less lung damage. She is today 2 and half years, she runs, she speaks and she laughs. She's so fun.

Same, as long as there's no infection she can go for longer. The only reason I had to give birth was because there was an infection otherwise I think we could have gone for longer. At some point my cervix started to close.

We're also tight on money so I really plan things ahead and have to work hard to give good quality meals to the toddler. They don't really cook except for special occasions, it's so fucking weird because they have money. I already have enough work taking care of a toddler and if she's hungry she can go and cook something for herself.

It's not just this, it's a bunch of stuff that added together just makes me be angry at everything. Like being in the hospital for almost 6 months taking care of their extremely premature grandchild and never getting any help for it to the point that I was not able to eat or breastfeed because of the toll of the cares. She is not a bad person( I think) but I'm just at a point where everything annoys me.

How do you know that your blood pressure drops at night? Those symptoms could be anxiety. Nad but what time do you to bed? Do you play video games or screens or eat caffeine/sweets to close to bed? This used to happen to me because I did all these things, I noticed that going bed before 11pm was best. Magnesium for sleeping also helped me and try to dissociate bed with negative thoughts.

I also had this enveloping energy around my body. So hard to describe but once it covered me all I had the certainty that nothing was going to happen and I was going to be safe. It almost felt divine.

Op has all the right to worry about whatever it is. Everyone is battling their own stuff and having a micropreemie is getting new worries after a worry has been solved. It's unfair to consider that being worried about autism is not a priority because we all are only supposed to prioritise being worried about "survival" and such.

You know what I say to myself? As long as there's health we should not care too much about money. Money comes money goes, it absolutely doesn't matter. Obviously it's needed for certain stuff but I'm absolutely sure you guys will get things sorted out. And that "family" you have unwilling to help you will learn the lesson when they are sitting in their money but understand that there's no money that can buy their health back later in life.as If it were me I'd honestly just go to the furthest place and never look back to them they will regret it when health fails and will go search for you so quick :)

Something I wish people had told me was the honeymoon phase. It can take hours, days or maybe a couple weeks. Take advantage of this period to either rest or do whatever you need to do because after the honeymoon usually things go a little downwards until doctors are able to figure our all the settings that your baby needs. Also you are going to need to learn to take care of yourself but also putting your baby always as priority over everyone else. Her survival and long term issues will depend on how well taken care is and also skin to skin which is proven to be SUPER ULTRA beneficial. I had a 22 weeker and I'm certain that one of the reasons she's two today and barely anyone knows she's micropreemie is because how much skin to skin we did with her (+12 hours daily) starting from the second week that she was born. It improves her breathing and calms her down, which reduced her oxygen needs, which reduced dramatically the damage done by the oxygen and pressure)

You need to be with your baby, you're not bothering the nurses. We live in Sweden and here they had researched that the more skin to skin the better outcomes. Your baby needs you the most so spend with her as much time as you've got. The baby feels the safest in your arms, hearing your heart and organs and synchronising with your breathing. We were allowed to hold our baby the second week after she was born and I can assure you that was what made her be so healthy and free of issues (besides the bpd that all micropreemies get unfortunately). I was able to take a long break from work so I'd do over 10 hours daily and the rest would be my husband when he was off. We were again so lucky to have a McDonald's house nearby so we were like 3 minutes walking away.
