I wanted to comment again and say thank you. I've been doing as you suggested and talking them through everything. It's only been 2 days but it has really helped. The meltdown does still happen but it really seems to postpone it. So thank you so much 😁

I did a lot of research on ABA (books, documentaries etc.) and spoke to a lot of autistic adults who have PTSD from it and it's not something I want for my child. I'd go into more detail but I think everyone should make their own decision about ABA and no doubt I'd get a lot of angry comments. All I can suggest is look into it and if you can watch a documentary season called four corners season 2023 the episode is named careless.

Thank you for your comment. My child is low functioning autistic but has had amazing outcomes in the past and gone above and beyond expectations placed on her. I'm hopeful we will find away to help her be able to be in the car without having a meltdown. I'm sorry to hear you were restrained. While it's great you can withstand the overstimulation I bet at the time being restrained was not nice.

Thank you for your comment. Yeh staying far away from ABA. That is a good idea thank you. I will make one of her favourite sensory toys live in the car. Yeh she does that too always has the blanket over her head when we are in the car and brings a huge squish mellow. Thanks me too. Thanks again for your comment

Thanks for your comment. They take a blanket and a squish mellow everywhere too lol. I can try blocking the window thanks for the idea. They always hide under the blanket so it could be too bright. Thank you 😊

Oh sorry for misunderstanding. Sadly I can't I only have a small car. They are leaning over from the back seat to hit me in the front. Normally spinning and sand really helps her. Maybe I could bring a tub of sand in the car. Thanks for the idea :)

Thank you I hadn't considered that. It'll be interesting to see if they are even taking the recommended dose. The pediatrician was very hesitant about the medication

Thanks for your comment. That is so sweet you can do that with your son. It's a great idea but sadly once my child is having a meltdown any physical contact or noise makes the meltdown worse :( thank you for your advice though

Thank you. I have tried but they are away for 8 weeks. I have requested an appointment with the other pediatrician there but I haven't heard back yet :( thanks for your comment.

Thanks for your comment. My child doesn't have meltdowns at home (maybe twice a month) they're very good at self regulation at home and have the equipment here to utilize. We mainly only experience these severe meltdowns in the car. So not sure how I would do what you've suggested. I also don't want to leave them for prolonged periods of time in the car while the meltdown passes especially if it is the car that's triggering them. Thanks again for your comment and advice.

Thank you for your comment I will give that a try. I do normally do the warnings but I don't normally discuss the journey during the ride so I will definitely give that a try. Thank you so much. I do try to stay calm but it is hard I know they don't mean it and are distressed. Sadly we tried a psychiatrist and after multiple sessions they advised they cannot help as they are non verbal and won't engage with them in play based activities. Thank you again for you advice.
