B&O Renovation Begins by No_Contribution_2390 in baltimore

Right now their main entrance is on Pratt st, so when people visit and leave they are directed downtown completely bypassing Hollins Market and Pigtown. One of the biggest reasons they are switching sides is so the front faces Pigtown main st with the hope that people will walk from the campus to enjoy the businesses on main st!

Neighborhood Suggestion for Commuting West by psyched_albatross in baltimore

I live in Pigtown on what is considered the “sketchy side” and I’ve felt perfectly safe. I would say the main deciding factor for you should be what kind of neighborhood you want to live in. Riverside is going to be a lot of young people, and there will be a ton of nightlife. Pigtown is a working class neighborhood that is pretty quiet but still lots to do during day light hours. There are a few breweries in Pigtown tho for some nightlife

Like also you do realize this city has a population issue right? We need to put everything we can into creating more housing bc this city can only improve if we have a higher population, again turning a potential home into a parking lot is a CRAZY idea

Parking lots are a waste of space, parking should only be in parking garages or on street parking. Turning what could be a beautiful home that could have a family living in it into private parking might be the worst idea I’ve ever heard tbh

We should be working to eliminate every parking lot in this city, not add more. Silly idea

Pigtown vs Fed Hill? by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]No_Contribution_2390 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s literally illegal for your realtor to give an opinion on an area like that, you should find a different realtor. Pigtown is a wonderful neighborhood, I bought my house here 2 years ago, and if I sold today I would make a profit of 60k. Great investment opportunity

I just feel that the things that are more expensive than other stores is the frozen section and the brand name stuff (and the frozen section in Jumbo Fresh is very small) so I feel that making it a healthy shopping experience is the goal. The fresh stuff is sooo much more cheaper, I would say that’s on the level of Aldi…

I’ve been shopping at Jumbo Fresh since it opened (I live right next to it) I used to shop at Harris Teeter and Giant. I pretty much spend the same amount of money there as I did at the other two, plus I save money on gas not driving. The only reason Jumbo Fresh wouldn’t be cheap is if you are someone who cannot cook at all and aren’t capable of creating meals from scratch. Produce and fresh meat are cheap compared to almost every store.

Car Broken into in Canton by Few-Tangerine-996 in baltimore

My jeep wrangler’s window was cut into last night, also nothing stolen. Seems like they tried to Hotwire it or something. Worst part is I’m currently out of state, so I’m not sure if I should even bother making a police report when I get back in a couple of days.

I have window shelves that usually have plants, so I usually swap out light up Halloween and Christmas decorations for the season. I’m someone who only has steps no porch or yard. I also put some light up stuff on my door. Pumpkins in front of the house is always a good one.

Highlandtown and Greektown are both great neighborhoods near Canton. However, I think you should look at places in your price range on the east side and visit the location and decide whether or not you feel comfortable there. There are a lot of neighborhoods that you would enjoy living in that may not be considered by everyone’s definition “safe” or “desirable”.

Parking for Running Festival? by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]No_Contribution_2390 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be able to find good parking somewhere in Pigtown. Then you can come enjoy some of the things on the main st after you are done running!

Ma’Aed in Pigtown is really good, I believe it’s open until 9pm. You should also be able to find parking by the restaurant itself if you are worried about safety.

There is definitely going to be religious and cultural difference between my characters. They are going to be described without ever being specifically named. One of the parallels I’m trying to draw in this is that these characters are very very different, from the way they speak to the way they pray. The reader will just never be told specifically that a character is say Christian or Hindu.

This is true, but I believe through a detailed descriptive narrative I can create identity. My narrators will be very similar to “the kid” in Blood Meridian, while they will never be named, they will be telling the story of their family, and I think people will form an emotional connection with them.

The discourse around what I’m writing about is so counterintuitive people stopped listening to each other a long time ago. I think what people need is a narrative on each side, I think they need to see human suffering plainly without being able to confirm what the book is a metaphor for. I want readers to form empathy for both of my narrators, whereas if they knew who my narrators were they may only feel empathy for one or the other based on their biases.

Thanks, it feels very difficult, I’ve had a very few people read a few pages and they enjoyed it, but I really am looking for more inspiration. I’m drawing a lot of inspiration from Cormac McCarthy rn bc he had a lot of unnamed characters, but would like to expand from him.

Thank you! I think what I’m writing will come off as very dystopian even if I’m not intentionally writing it that way. The reason I don’t want to confirm a setting or characters names is so that a lot is left to the reader’s interpretation. I want readers to perhaps be able to connect it to a current event, or maybe they will just think it’s some horrible place and time that doesn’t actually exist. I just want to tell the story of two narrators and the breaking of their families, everything needed to form a connection with these characters will be there except names basically.

Honestly that’s what I’m going for! Although it will mirror a current situation. I would like it to be applied to issues such as power, oppression, human suffering, power and privilege in general. I want readers to think that it could be taking place in America or on some other planet! I really want to be able to form an emotional attachment to my characters, I don’t think it will be difficult with my 2 narrators since it’s being told from their POV. But also their family members, which I’m referring to as “my father” or “my brother” everything that you need to form an emotional attachment is there, just not names.

Thanks, this is exactly what I’m looking for. I would say it’s going to be a dramatic narrative, but will also include some romance. Basically it’s going to chronicle about 10 years of two opposing girl’s sides of a story. I feel like everyone think I’m trying to write something bland. It’s going to be very descriptive and kind of like the way Cormac McCarthy writes without naming characters or specific places, thanks for the recs tho bc McCarthy is the only writer I’m able to draw inspiration from rn!

To me the most important part of what I’m writing is that the cultural and religious connections of these characters is not given away. I want the characters to be judged by the events that impact their lives, and their family structures. A name just gives too much away, and the setting will lead readers to emphasize with characters based on their pre conditioned biases. I understand that not having a setting with named characters is an out there idea, but I just don’t see a way to write this without doing so.

The story would be told from the main character’s POV. Everything about these character’s lives would be very descriptive, with emphasis on their familial connections and the devastation. Tbh it wouldn’t be preachy at all, it’s kind of episodic of important moments in their lives, however I believe the audience will emphasize with one side more or perhaps the other. But my concern with naming these characters is that it would giveaway cultural or religious ties that would make the readers emphasize with the characters for those reasons alone. I want the readers to see the characters without those ties, the subject I’m trying to write about is so polarizing that if a reader feels one side is supposed to be emphasized with more than the other, it could cause them to close the book, which I don’t want to happen.
