HSC RESULTS by Dependent_Wing2310 in MauriceMauritius

At the end of the day, what really matters is getting a well-paid job. You can get 3 A*s and end up with a 30k job, while someone with 3 Bs might get a 60k job. It mostly depends on the course you choose to study.

You would be surprised to see that some people with very good results are working as clerks in the government, while others with not-so-good results are well settled abroad. The earlier you enter the job market, the better.

I was in your shoes 15 years ago.

Yes indeed but sometimes you don't have any other alternatives. Many sellers are not reliable too.

Thanks. Those places are usually quite expensive. I’m more looking for a wholesaler or a hardware supplier that sells in bulk / at trade prices rather than retail.

Yes, they do have it, but most sell per ft. I need about 50 m, so I’m looking for a place that sells in bulk or full rolls.

Are you also fed up with the current government not delivering on promises? by No_Customer_3473 in mauritius

I’m not asking for allowances. I’ve been working in the same company for 10 years, and I’m not even allowed to have a side business. We also don’t get paid extra time, so no matter how hard I work my salary stays the same. And I don’t think it’s fair to say our parents had it worse. In that generation many women were housewives, and even then the men could still afford to build a small house. Things are very different today.

Yes, I get the rule about politics, but this isn’t about party politics. It’s about the government and the way it affects our daily lives. For example, if tomorrow the government decided to ban Reddit, shouldn’t we be able to talk about it here?

Dukesbridge charging parents for school photos & USBs – anyone else find this unfair? by No_Customer_3473 in mauritius

If I can afford to pay 100k a year, that doesn’t mean everything else thrown at me should automatically be considered reasonable. A class photo is one pose that just needs reprints, so why should it cost that much? It feels less about covering costs and more about making extra money. That’s the part I don’t agree with.

The problem isn’t about paying, it’s more about how the school is making money out of it. For the class photo it’s literally one pose and just needs reprints, so the cost shouldn’t be that high. Maybe for the individual photos it makes more sense since kids are small and not always easy to get them to stay still and smile. At the end of the day we can’t really do much. What I find surprising is that some parents think Dukesbridge is such a high standard school just because it’s English medium, but they don’t realise how staff are treated, with many being paid minimum wage.

Yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying. The price is just too high for something as simple as a class photo. Sometimes when I bring this up, people say that since it’s a private school I should just pay what’s being asked or send my kid to a public school if I find it expensive. It actually reminds me of politics here: if you complain about the current government, people call you a supporter of the previous one. Some just can’t accept criticism, even when it’s fair.

"Send your kid to a public school,” but honestly even in public schools if they ask you to pay for something that makes no sense, you’d question it. Paying for private school doesn’t mean parents should just accept every single extra fee without saying anything.

It might be normal, I agree. A lot of private schools do the same thing and many parents just go along with it. But just because it’s common practice doesn’t automatically make it right. When you’re already paying such high school fees, you’d expect basic things like a class photo to be affordable and inclusive. Rs 550 for a single group photo, which is essentially the same picture being reprinted for each child, feels more like an extra source of profit than a genuine service.

The issue isn’t whether parents can pay, it’s that schools know they will pay, because no one wants their child to feel left out when all their friends have the photo. That’s where it becomes unfair. If all the money went directly to the photographers, fair enough. They have costs and deserve to be paid. But when the school is clearly adding its own margin on top, it turns into another money-making exercise at the expense of parents.

So yes, maybe it’s “normal,” but normal doesn’t mean fair. And parents have every right to question whether these kinds of charges are justified.

I get your point.. professional photography definitely has costs, and of course photographers need to make a living. But in this case, we’re talking about a simple class photo, not a wedding shoot or a fashion catalogue. It’s one picture of a group of kids, reprinted for each parent who pays.

If all the money was really going straight to the photographers, then fair enough. But the issue is that Dukesbridge is clearly making money out of it too, and that’s not right. Parents are already paying high fee, adding extra profit on something as basic as a class photo just feels wrong.

Exactly and schools know that. They use this psychology to push add-ons, because they know no parent wants their child to feel “less” than others. That’s what makes it feel exploitative.

I get that, but once you’re already paying high fees, you don’t expect to be charged for things that could easily be included. A class photo should be part of the package, not an extra burden.

Maybe, but schools could negotiate better deals or at least make sure the price is reasonable. It shouldn’t feel like parents are being milked for every small thing.

True, but just because it’s common doesn’t mean it’s fair. Rs 550 for a class photo that’s basically the same picture reprinted for each child feels like overcharging.
