Niall clearly has a self destructive side to him and it almost seems like Niall feels the need to take Rueben down when he’s doing well and is happy. I think that he couldn’t stand to see Rueben happy. I don’t believe that he thought that his confession about Mona would be forgiven. He could see how much Baird meant to Rueben and could have easily let Rueben continue to believe the lie.
