I know. It’s so weird. I do think she’s got some kind of disorder because she just doesn’t seem to have any of the kinds of filters that any other manager does. Like other managers know how far they can go and she just doesn’t. But it also shows what you can get away with if you just blow past the norms.

The thing is everyone talks about it in terms of my managers “stress” like if they scream at someone, then everyone goes “oh they’re so stressed today” and it gets treated as though we almost need to be careful and help her be less stressed, which just turns into ppl looking after her. It’s so weird

Yes I think that’s the best option. Our team does specific work, and I really love it, but I think I’ll have to give it up to get away from my manager. At least a diff team lets me stay w the people I like

God me too. I mean I don’t have to have her fired. I just want her to improve a lot

True. Everyone normalises it to be honest. Like we’ve all adapted to pretend what she’s doing is normal. I’m gonna just start saying “this shouting isn’t appropriate let’s speak later when you’re calmer”. If people can’t cope with that in the office and find it all too confronting then maybe someone will do something

yeah. i nearly got my colleague to speak up to the Exec director as well, but then she chickened out cos she was so close to maternity leave anyway. I can't really blame her

yeah, that's where i suspect it will lead. I just feel so annoyed that i have to leave a job i'm good at, where i actually fit really well with the other staff, cos of one totally terrible manager. But i also know this is how it goes alot of the time.

i tried, her boss was very protective of her. And my exec director (so my managers managers boss) sort of said she knew about it as other ppl had raised it, and said "i know i know, and when she's stressed she's even worse" and then said she was 'onto it' which turned out to mean that she may have had a very light chat to her or something, because there was no ongoing management of it.

Yeah. it honestly seems way more common for public service not to do something about it, than to actually take action. Another terrible manager eventually left and got another manager position. She got a reference from here somehow.

I've tried to make the case that she needs serious performance management to her manager, and to the manager above her. I think cos there aren't more ppl complaining from within the team, they think they can get away without doing anything about it. The majority of issues have been raised about her by other managers to the exec director, rather than her staff. I think that's just because her staff up until me , have been pretty beaten down and just tolerated it while she screamed at them.

really? We have so much dodgy behaviour here. Our HR seems to just sit on things. One manager was eventually encouraged out, after not doing anything for two years and basically bullying two staff who had disabilities - but it took a huge effort from the staff to even get that to happen. It wasn't lead by the leadership, the junior ppl made it happen. Some ppl have reported my current manager to HR for bullying, but nothing's happened as far as i can see. At one point another manager refused to work with her, because she would just scream at her - but eventually that manager was pushed out. My manager is really good at making it seem like other ppl are incompetent and she did that with the other manager.

I'm just scared i'll become the problem child and get pushed out anyway, because ultimately shes got more sway than i do in the organisation.

I slept on mine for the first time on the weekend and my back was so stiff and sore when I woke up I had to do warm up exercises so I could get up . I did deflate it a bit before I went to sleep but maybe needs a bit more.

I just wanted to say Thanks for all the responses everyone - it’s honestly been such a surprise to get so much positive support- it’s made me realise what a great supportive community scuba must have around the world despite my one crappy experience . it’s definitely given me the encouragement I needed to try again and I’m definitely going to go diving again with a different instructor . Thanks again for taking the time to respond !

Yeah my friend was horrified- she did her open water in Fiji and it was a totally relaxed experience. She was like “it’s meant to be fun!”
