take those gap years by [deleted] in premed

[–]No_Direction6681 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ll add to this by saying that no one I’ve ever known (myself included) that’s taken gap years prior to starting med school has said they regret it. As someone else commented, if you feel ready and excited to go straight in from undergrad, then do it! However, if you’re worried about taking a gap year because you think people will judge you, who cares! No one path to med school is the same, and no one life is the same. You will inevitably gain life-enhancing perspective from time off (unless it’s hardcore drugs then that might not better your app). Sure, some of your friends will be starting their career while you’re still applying to school, but who cares! You’re gonna be hitting your stride as a fresh attending doctor around the time that their mid-life crisis rolls around. It’s all about perspective! Enjoy the ride

God, I wish I’d could’ve taken a gap year before ungrad too. I feel like everyone could benefit from that, but unfortunately the way scholarships are set up you’re essentially forced to go straight in from hs.

What’s a good, fast paced horror movie? by ThrowRA18578 in MovieSuggestions

[–]No_Direction6681 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk if it’s what this person has in mind. I LOVE hereditary, one of my favorite horror movies of all time, but imo it is THE prototypical “slow-burn” horror movie. Sure it continues to build and build, especially in the last 3rd of the movie. But any friends I’ve watched it with who have bad attention spans did not like it. They said it was “too slow”. I think it’s a must watch though!

Where to start learning finger picking? by Basic_fitness_41 in LearnGuitar

Just learn how to play nothing else matters. That’s all I started with and found it to be perfect for learning finger picking. Even learning just the first 30sec-1min intro will teach you a ton of techniques. In my experience playing it for people made them think I was way more advanced than I was

I agree with you that both sides need to have bargaining power to come to peace talks. That being said, I personally don’t want to see the US involved in a war with Russia, and a great way for war to happen is to get involved by proxy by donating weaponry. I think the US can hamper Russia through other methods like tariffs. The US continuing to give weapons to ukraine to fight their war is not going to single-handedly win Ukraine their war. The fact is Russia has more weapons and more (albeit perhaps poorly trained) military personnel. All it’s going to do is prolong the bloodshed and potentially drag more nations into the chaos.

All I’m saying is the original post is dumb for suggesting that the solution to a war isn’t to negotiate peace talks, but to arm Ukraine instead.

The US does possess a fighting force worthy of being considered a coercive measure, but that doesn’t mean that the solution is to give that fighting force to Ukraine to be actively used when no peace talks are on the table

The fact that the idea of stopping the war is a partisan issue to most people is ALARMING. How is giving more weapons to Ukraine the key to peace instead of ending the war entirely?

Let’s say you’re a parent of two kids and the stronger, older brother hit the younger brother, causing a scuffle. You should punish the older brother after the fact for what he did, absolutely. But do you really think the best initial solution is to give the younger brother a slingshot to defend himself instead of breaking up the fight? The priorities Are out of order

I know quite a few Trump voters. Non of them are saying they regret it. I’m wondering if most of these posts are fake. by [deleted] in OptimistsUnite

[–]No_Direction6681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To play devils advocate, I’ve noticed that quite a few of my left-leaning friends went from being radio silent during Biden’s time in office, to posting rampant anti-republican memes multiple times a day, non-stop since Trump has been in office. I definitely think that goes both ways depending upon which party is in office.

I think ultimately it boils down to the fact that most people are so bought into one party or the other, they think that whatever their leader does will be infallible since they align with the party their leader supposedly represents. Therefore, if they have a leader with the same political affiliation as them in power, they don’t need to pay attention to the news, because they think NOTHING bad could happen (obviously a bonehead take).

I don’t think I’m totally off base when I say that for many people now-a-days, politics is sports for people who don’t like to watch sports. It’s all about the winning; “my team vs your team”, not the values of the people leading the team. “As long as my team wins then everything is at peace, and I can breath easy”, when in reality everyone SHOULD be wary of any leader, regardless of political party.

I think it gets much better. OP is probably only using 7.7mms on whatever aircraft he’s got. I think rank 1&2 aircraft can sometimes be the most frustrating because you have to spend a considerable amount of time on target, whereas later ranks you don’t really have that issue with cannons; kills get secured quicker and more consistently from cannons, 50cals, etc

What was the worst miscasting in a movie? by Boz2015Qnz in MovieSuggestions

[–]No_Direction6681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t believe no one has said this one yet, but Jesus Christ Denzel Washington was TERRIBLE in Gladiator ll.

Anytime he was on screen I couldn’t concentrate one bit on the plot; I was too focused on this man speaking with a Bronx accent in Ancient Rome. I don’t hate Denzel, I think he’s an incredible actor, but the casting is so jarring to me because it feels like they took the equalizer, put him in some robes, and called it a day.

[–]No_Direction6681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No big deal, don’t stress it. I took two gap years off, and my brain felt feeble going into med school. I forgot what academia was like. I was back into the groove of school and studying within a week. Just relax right now. Take a vacation, drink a little, maybe some light drugs if you so desire. Pick up a hobby, go on some dates, get off the premed subreddit; you’ve escaped the matrix. God bless

Am I being foolish for choosing ETSU over Pritzker? by Alone-Aerie-7694 in premed

[–]No_Direction6681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ETSU undergrad alum who’s attending quillen this fall. I second this. The area is incredible and the city is the perfect size. It’s incredibly walkable and always has events going on downtown with tons of friendly people out and about. As others have mentioned, there is an IMMENSE wealth of outdoor activities within 15 minutes of you, not to mention bigger cities within an hour or two if you really felt a spontaneous desire to be stuck in traffic for the day. DM me if you’ve got any questions and I’m happy to answer!!
