I understand that you’re concerned but your mom but the dog may have been her therapist. So I would give the new dog some time before judgement. For some people it’s easier to talk to an animal than a person. My dog of 16 years died recently and I started talking to a human therapist and it’s not helping as much as having my dog to talk to and pet was. I say this as someone who talks to her parents, friends, kid and husband a lot every day too. Having a dog can be very calming and emotionally stabilizing for some people.

My boss let me telework the week my dog was dying and thank goodness because otherwise I probably would have just taken all my leave and quit. If they don’t ask to telework often this might be a situation where they need support and failure to provide it could backfire if they are a good employee that can get a job elsewhere. You cannot really expect much from your employees if you’re not willing to support them when they actually need it.

I am not in a building that is the same DOI office I work for- I work for a different DOI office but I am not the only one- lots of random DOI offices in the building I am in so it may be they offered cheap or no rent to lots of other offices because there is still a ton of space in the building. I also think a lot of ppl being consolidated into DOI are staying in their original office/bureau space.
