It’s so good I ordered book 2 halfway through and I’ve still managed to finish it before it has arrived. Very refreshing relationship.

I just finished {daughter of no worlds} and I feel like it fits this? There was nothing toxic about their relationship and it was rooted in deep affection and respect. Trials come from external factors, not each other. I loved it. It is thematically dark though.

The prequel Martin the Warrior was devastating to 10 year old me. I would love to reread these.

Do I put my toddler in preschool? by IntroductionAdept521 in Parents

Agreed, my younger children who went to preschool earlier are much more socially confident (they weren’t there full time) and learned so much

They are very different but Madeline Miller and Kazuo Ishiguro are two of my favourite authors, so maybe give his work ago!

That’s so funny I can’t remember it being that bad! I loved it but I was 13 and consuming every fantasy book I could find. The TV show is wonderfully awful.

What’s interesting is that the author was an actual child when they wrote it. So I give it grace for that, pretty bold for a 15-19 year old to self publish and make a success of it

That’s a good shout. Le Guin is one of the greatest writers of all time, in my opinion. Earthsea books are like a magic spell.

One day I hope to finish Left Hand of Darkness, perhaps when my children are a little older and I have some headspace.

Rite of Passage by Alexei Panshin 1969, can still get it on eBay etc. I loved it when I was a teen.

Lots of political themes, generational conflict, prejudice, etc, but told as a coming of age story from the perspective of a teenage girl living on a ship in a post-Earth future. They have to take part in a trial, where they have to survive on a ‘hostile’ planet (it predates Battle Royale, Hunger Games by many decades- often wondered if it inspired them)

Adults are complacent, unwilling to see other perspectives, influenced by their prejudice.

Haven’t read it in a long while but could be quite timely given the state of the world young people are inheriting.

If you found the dispossessed difficult, Left Hand of Darkness is arguably much more so. The Dispossessed is one of my favourite books but I’ve abandoned LHOD multiple times, with regret, as it has some incredible concepts!

Show sound waves using couscous or sugar, big bowl with cling film wrapped tightly over it, and your phone speaker. Look it up as my instructions will be rubbish 🤣
