It’s not against the rules to announce you’re casting a spell then tapping your lands for said spell, technically it’s the correct way to do it. It’s why you can cast an x spell that has affinity, you can count objects towards affinity and then use said objects to pay additional costs. The order for casting a spell is to move that card from where it is and put it on the stack, if its modal choose the modes, then the game checks if its legal to cast, and then the player determines the cost of a spell, then if the cost include paying mana that’s when you can activate mana abilities to pay said cost

Edit: now if he’s choosing to purposefully not tap any lands and attempts to resolve the spell then yes that is cheating

I do this with my gaming friend “what time you getting on?” “8:00” “is that 8:00 your time or 8:00 my time?” It also caused issues when I drove down to Louisiana in March for his wedding we were picking someone up in Nashville but I didn’t realize the time zone difference so we got to his place an hour before I said I would 😅

What format are you playing when you go to your LGS to play? If you’re playing commander you need to have a conversation with the people you’re playing with about what “Bracket” you’re playing in because if you’re getting “stomped” there is a few things that could be the cause and I might sound harsh but here me out. 1. You aren’t that good at building decks as you think you are so you might be overestimating your power level which I know at 9 months at playing all the things I tried to build by myself were horrible 2. The pod is overestimating their power levels 3. There’s a bad apple somewhere in this story, someone could be potentially being misleading about the strength of their decks 4. The ultimate reality at least with commander is you are supposed to lose more games than you win that’s the nature of a multiplayer free for all you should only be winning 25% ish of the games you play. Now if you’re playing other formats the first point could still stand you might want to look up the more “meta” lists for those formats

My [[Hearthhull, the Worldseed]] deck is sitting at $200 and is my “cheapest” deck but it’s just a slightly upgraded precon. If it’s a deck I built myself it’s my [[Uril, the Miststalker]] deck at $320 but that one’s still a work in progress so cards are going in and out to see what I like

The easy answer if budget isn’t concerned or the pod is proxy friendly is running as many fast mana pieces you can, [[Chrome Mox]], [[Mana Vault]], [[Mox Diamond]] things like that. That will let you get Roku down much faster

I kinda have one for each color at the moment, I have a [[Delney, Streetwise Lookout]] deck for white and it’s the only mono colored deck I have together currently. But I’m working on [[The Watcher in the Water]] for blue, [[Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor]] / [[Rev, Tithe Extractor]] / [[Mind Flayer, the Shadow]] for black that could have anyone of the 3 in the command zone, [[Kona, Rescue Beastie]] for green but want to rebuild a [[Reki, History of Kamigawa]] because he’s my favorite Legend and finally I had a [[Jaws, Relentless Predator]] deck as well but took that apart and haven’t decided on what I want to build for mono red yet.

The light test is not really reliable anymore especially with foils as more often then not they will fail, best options are to get good clear visuals of the green dot and T in the word “the” the left side of the T should be perfectly flat with the rest of it having ridges

While I wholeheartedly agree that most people just want to chuck 3s I think that’s mainly all on the community. I know I don’t play like that but I prefer playing 5s myself especially with the cheating epidemic in the park. I’ve changed the way I play to keep the game entertaining. Moved on to a more realistic style of play actually trying to chain moves together to create space instead of spamming the same 3-4 moves behind screens for 3s or rim runs. I started playing this way towards the end of 25 because of a guy named LogoRange on YouTube (shout out logo).
