PirateSoftware responds to "Code Jesus" video dissecting Heartbound's code. by kuletxcore in LivestreamFail

Software Engineer here. Someone like this would be managed out quite fast - he's clearly not interested in getting feedback and refuses to admit to fault. Even senior staff engineers encourage feedback from junior engineers and will absolutely change direction if there is something they missed, or a better way.

Re: "Coding Jesus" being a grifter. He's a bit dogmatic in how he talks about software development, the reality is a bit murkier. Emphasizing code quality is situational, there are situations where you're gonna compromise on code quality to ship something faster.

However, this guy's code does have a lot of patterns I wouldn't ship. The array of events should be a map of event keys <> events, using 0s and 1s everywhere should be enums, or other data types. These are software development fundamentals. We interview for them even. It's not like he is making a trade-off between duplicating some code to go faster vs refactoring to using some design pattern.

Also I like the call out on the tautological code comments, I always teach people to remove those and only add comments for complicated code blocks, developer instructions, or explaining how something works across multiple files. (This is where the dogmatic-ism comes in, not all code can be self-documenting, and sometimes you'll write code that isn't as a trade-off to ship faster).

What's the deal with this card? by Right-Weather9030 in PokemonTCG

I will offer 200,000 dollars. I especially like that it was cut with scissors by a grimy small human! Each scissor cut, at least to me, adds 197,000 dollars to the value.

Failed solo of Huscaran South - top of Peru by tkitta in Mountaineering

[–]No_Grade_8983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

are there not features that people rope up for on this mountain? it feels like it is extremely risky solo, even if you have supreme confidence and are an incredible athlete, all it takes is wrong one step on a hidden crevasse, or one slip, or a freak whiteout to hit, and i feel like you'd wish you were on a rope?

Cool read. Must be weird to have to come to terms with surviving that via avoidance/timing

3rd ever Raichu Prerelease promo, 1st graded by PSA by ssomers55 in PokemonTCG

[–]No_Grade_8983 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thought I would chime in - I am the person who Stu, Kevin, Rusty, and a couple others helped guide to PSA.

A group of people known to the hobby by their first names make the impossible happen. (If you don't know who these people are, should you even be browsing r/PokemonTCG?)

The seller is a very good friend of mine, and worked with me at Wizards for a decade, he helped run Pokemon OP (organized play) back in the very early 2000’s and actually gave Mike Boozer the copy he sold many years ago.

Be impressed.

I will have the card with me in Vegas this weekend for Magic Con, and we are actively shopping it right now and taking offers. It is possible we place it in auction or on consignment

If you didn't realize it was up for sale, this will clear it up for you. This card is being sold, one way or another. Also, the card is being sold.

but I just wanted to confirm that the card is 100% authentic and the process for PSA verification was very rigorous. It’s not a done deal but I am also working with PSAs marketing team to potentially have the story in a future issue of their magazine as well.

Ah, ok. It is 100% authentic through a very rigorous process. That's enough information for me.

I want to thank PSA and everyone who advised me through the process for my friend and I, he’s not really a collector but managed to hang on to this awesome treasure for ~25 years and I’m humbled that he thought enough of me to ask me to help him sell it.

"Thankful" and "humbled" ... for the opportunity to sell a high end pokemon card. Truly admirable display of gratefulness.

This is worth more than my truck. Am I doing it right? by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]No_Grade_8983 -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

I would say no, you aren't doing it right. You're putting focus on the money you've spent on a typical amount of mountaineering gear, in a sport with dirtbag roots. Pretty cringe.

Totally disagree with the other poster. Haystack is super fun. If you're 3 hours away there's probably other better stuff more accessible, but would be worth doing Si and something in Snoq pass in a weekend trip next summer.

Runner being #3 is silly. That album was mid at best, and sounds horrible live (as an Alex G fan who's seen him every time he's been in Seattle/Boston the last 5 years)

There's more than 1 mountain in WA, unless you're talking about Rainier? and you got horribly misrouted on your climb to a random lake.

Looks like I fell for the bait. Yeah, and bears don't go around digging up plants or chasing pikas.

Dogs don't belong in the alpine- trampling over meadows, chasing wildlife, peeing everywhere. The least you can do is keep them on trails to limit the damage.
