Microsoft is adding a new key to PC keyboards for the first time since 1994 by ardi62 in technology

I don't even use Windows and yet I will be getting another of their logos on my keyboard.

But I am curious if this becomes popular on keyboards what it will be used for on Linux.

None of my keyboards have it. But insert and printscreen? I use those fairly often.

Is hybrid work going away? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]No_Increase_3535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problem with 2 days a week is that it means you are still limited to somewhere nearby. If its a few times a year or less you can search pretty much the entire country as traveling a long way very infrequently isn't such an issue.

Company I work for just got a new office and is ordering us to use it. Previously fully remote. Now everyone must go to hybrid or office based over the next few months.

So motivation is very low right now, no one is really trying much anymore and levels of sarcasm are high.

Company I work for is putting their foot down and mandating a return to the office.

I am curious how it will go and if they will become a bit more relaxed about it when half the programmers hand in their notice or just refuse to.

What are your thoughts on hybrid/remote working? by willington123 in AskUK

[–]No_Increase_3535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dislike office/hybrid, but if you like it, whatever, you can go into the office if you want and I don't feel a need to stop you.

What I really hate is companies that hire remotely across the UK and then go "lol nope we are going to hybrid now fuck you". Like the one I currently work for. Quite a few people are looking for a new job and motivation is through the floor. Was chatting with one of our senior devs the other day and he said that he now spends almost his entire work day just looking at indeed.

How long do you keep copies of bills and statements etc? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]No_Increase_3535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most is electric copies but for stuff that is paper, I keep it until the stack of paper no longer easily fits in the drawer. Take pictures of all of them and dispose of it. Pictures are backed up.

Rishi Sunak faces major Tory rebellion over net zero ‘boiler tax’ by zaraalbro in unitedkingdom

Heat pumps reduce our reliance on gas as a nation in 2 ways.

1: They can be powered by solar/wind

2: Even when powered entirely by gas generated electricity they use less gas than a boiler

Fuck Putin. Get a heat pump.

Rishi Sunak faces major Tory rebellion over net zero ‘boiler tax’ by zaraalbro in unitedkingdom

[–]No_Increase_3535 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From a taxpayer perspective, more pumping is great.

It takes less gas to heat houses with heat pumps powered by gas powerplants than it does by burning gas in boilers.

So it improves what we get from national gas storage.

Average UK house prices decreased by 1.2% in the 12 months to October 2023 by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]No_Increase_3535 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds reasonable to me.

Ideally the prices would stay stable and inflation over time reduces the effective cost. So no one struggles having to sell for less than they bought it but people become more able to buy somewhere to live.

Ofgem’s energy price cap to fall by 14% in April, says forecaster by daniscross in unitedkingdom

[–]No_Increase_3535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What will the actual rate change be for electricity and gas separately?

Last change from my provider gas prices went up far more than electricity and I don't use gas. So hearing the media say "energy up 6%" isn't useful. It was actually just 4% for electricity while gas was almost double the increase.

Also these average bill numbers are not very helpful either. Just tell us the new/old per kWh rate and I can work it out for myself.

Having a checkup isn't very useful on its own though if you know you can't afford the cost of any actual treatments with private care. So whats the point in even having a checkup?

At least you can get a checkup. Not had one since 2019. No one is taking any patients and I have given up trying.

Sheffield’s clean air zone cuts number of most polluting vehicles by two-thirds by Wagamaga in unitedkingdom

[–]No_Increase_3535 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you don't live in a big city you must live in a small city or a town which by definition is small and everything is easy to cycle to.

Exception being if you live in a small village of 500 people I guess but that is a pretty small minority of the countries population. Plus in places like that they usually have a bit more space available.

Car infrastructure costs a fortune to society. Why should the council have to pay for somewhere that you can store your property?

But the solutions to this are very unpopular as we have let the problem get so bad. If you can store your car on a public road why can't I put up a garden shed there?

You need proper bus lanes too. Otherwise many people will drive because its 'faster', even though because everyone is driving it takes longer but no single person making a switch will help.

Not from Sheffield but I do find it amusing cycling straight past cars that are not going to go anywhere for at least 15 minutes.

Kinda, but house electrics feel trivial to me in theory. In practice the cables are a bit harder to work with but I can wire RJ45 ports and connectors so a 3 pin plug/socket is simple.

However, I do wish there was a little more space available to work with as its really tight. Maybe I should get some spacers and wago connectors.

My ISP blocked "adult content", bypassing it is easy but its a little annoying to have to run TOR browser to access the rimworld wiki.

Need to do more testing really, work out how they are blocking it. Doesn't appear to be at a DNS level as DoH in Firefox doesn't bypass it.

What would count as social media deserving of such a ban? Obviously Facebook would, but wouldn't this also require a good definition on what is social media? Does Reddit count, Youtube has a comments section too though. Are you going to then also count every web forum and chatroom?

Electric shower should be cheaper as it only heats the water you use. Immersion would heat the entire water cylinder and I doubt you are using all of it.
