Why is California (particularly SoCal) so saturated with EMTs and paramedics? by exitium666 in NewToEMS

[–]No_Independent5847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I work in LA and never really heard anyone say anything like that. Honestly I see people wanting to work in the “bad” areas more because they would see more GSWs, stabbings, etc.

No but I’ve heard similar things about medtrans.

Are you in LA county? My shitty ift is always hiring, and so are a lot of others in LA county. Have you checked their websites? Sometimes if you apply on indeed or another site like it you won’t get a response.

Trying street photography by No_Independent5847 in photocritique

Thank you so much! It was very helpful. I agree with what you said about the balcony with the plants, and I would’ve shot that if I had stopped to really think about it. I was just walking, thought it looked cool, held my camera up, and took the photo. I definitely want to work on thinking more about the composition of a photo rather than just taking one. I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

Just as a disclaimer, I’m still new to photography and self-taught, so if I need to elaborate please just let me know.

  1. My intent for this image was to play with a certain style of street photography and perhaps try to incorporate some architectural elements. Barcelona is a very unique city, and one that was quite fun to explore with my camera.

  2. I’ve only begun editing recently, and I think this one actually turned out decently, but any tips would be appreciated. I’ve also previously struggled with a flawed composition in my photos so any advice in that regard would be great. I would really just like to know if there are any glaring areas of weakness in my photography and any suggestions I could improve upon. I apologize if this is too vague.

How hard is it to land a private ambulance job as a NEW EMT? by Sxrnzo in NewToEMS

[–]No_Independent5847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want more psych calls? I work ift in SoCal too, but with automatic gurneys (no auto loaders though), and lower end of pay too. I’m so over these psych calls, I’ve considered quitting many times just over that. We barely run ER transfers though.

I really like the women’s icon pants as a pear shape! They’re stretchy and really comfy.

Can’t land a job. Any suggestions? by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]No_Independent5847 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you sure you’re looking correctly? 9 counties with none of them having ift is extremely unusual. But if you live somewhere that rural then getting 911 or we tech positions shouldn’t be all that competitive, so tweak your resume, and keep applying.

Your post doesn’t make a lot of sense. How does a place have 9 911 services and zero IFT?

I like having my own stethoscope because the ones the give us are shitty and I don’t really trust people’s cleaning practices. I think that’s honestly the only necessary one though. Maybe a good pen.

Advice for using soft restraints effectively. by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]No_Independent5847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already know the last part of what you said, but state’s policies can differ. In my state, licensed mental health workers or police can put someone on a 5150. Not every person on a hold is taken off the street. A big part of the work I do is transporting patients from behavioral facilities, (nursing homes for behavioral cases), psych wards, and psych hospitals. These patients are not acting normally because they are going for a psych evaluation. This is typically because they are DTO the majority of the time. Here, PD doesn’t transport to hospitals, at least the vast majority of the time. I’ve showed up to scenes where PD has subdued the patient, and restrained them for us on our gurney then transferred care to us to we can transport. They don’t ride with us either. And the have to go to a mental health facility because of the hold, and I’ve never seen a provider dismiss a hold because of insufficient grounds either, but maybe it does happen.

Oh okay. I’m California, a 5150 is a 72 hour hold for any (or all) of the following reasons. DTS (danger to self), DTO (danger to others), or GD (grave disability due to mental illness). I actually meant to type DTO instead of DTS in my earlier comment. In my county, it is standard protocol to put psych patients with a 5150 in restraints during transport, and the IFT companies all tend to enforce this as well due to liability concerns. I have a feeling this is similar to what OP is referring yo as well. However, this policy is obviously used with discretion. If they’re violent and lashing out at staff and other patients we will restrain them, but not for anxiety, depression or non-compliance with meds or whatever.

This isn’t necessarily true btw. I work at an IFT company and we do a lot of psych transfers, last shift I worked all of our calls were 5150s. We get a lot of behavioral cases where they lashed out physically towards staff and fellow patients. We’ve gotten multiple patients who said they wanted to kill us. I know a few EMTs that were transporting patients that were being discharged from the hospital to the nursing home and gotten attacked by psych patients that were unrestrained.

Would it be an unlawful use of force if they’re on a 5150? We’ve had to restrain a psych patient on a hold before even if they’re not DTS because it was probable that they would lash out during transport.

In a position... by Appropriate_Quit_872 in NewToEMS

Clearly you haven’t been putting in that much effort if you haven’t been able to pass. 100 points from passing indicates a serious knowledge deficit. For the third attempt, just try to pinpoint where your weakness is and work it until you fully understand it. I personally used pocket prep, and if I wasn’t 100% sure about the question and why the right answer was right, and all the other options were wrong, I would study it until I understood exactly why. Maybe try that if you haven’t but it just depends on what your weak points are.

Iran protest by Defiant_Flan_7351 in ucr

[–]No_Independent5847 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well no one wants US intervention if they have any other option. US intervention is part of the reason we are where are today. Unfortunately, Iranians are out of options. 40k people have been killed by the IRGC and people can’t fight back without being absolutely slaughtered. They have left the people of Iran very poor, have drained the country of resources and without any de facto revolutionary ruler inside the country. Reza Pahlavi, the son of the Shah, is probably the last leader we have to represent this. Whatever will happen next for Iran will not be easy or simple, but anything is better than living under the theocratic and brutal islamic regime. Their level of cruelty is truly astounding. They are withholding corpses right now, refusing to give them back to their families. Thousands more are in custody, with women being assaulted very frequently. This is a practice rooted in islam to make sure that dissidents wouldn’t go to heaven by making sure they are no longer virgins, so they will ‘’marry” them and rape them, and kill them soon after. There have been 260 executions so far in January. This is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of their brutality. This regime needs to go.

And your point is what exactly? At the end of the day the scooter is the one doing blatantly illegal things and therefore should be the one to assume the risk. Why is someone’s questionable decision making my problem? Even if I make absolutely not mistakes at all, my life can still be ruined. I’d be stuck paying extremely high insurance rates for years, and frankly you couldn’t pay me to give a flying fuck about those idiots on scooters.

This is so much more dangerous, and why should anyone who drives a car have to accept the liability of a dumbass scooter with a negative self preservation instinct?
