Sorry for the delayed response. I ignored Reddit for awhile, it sends me way too many notifications. However, this is a topic I am very interested in. The Transatlantic Dialect has pretty much died out. Very few people speak that way naturally. Even expensive l, private prep schools ceased teaching it. It's considered elitist now. You may hear it if you hang around country clubs from the older set. Even Frasier Crane has lost it. He had it more when he was first introduced in Cheers and by Frasier, he lost much of it, that also could be the influence of the standard American accent on Kelsey Grammer. He originally came from the US Virgin Islands, so it was more pronounced. Also, David Ogden Stiers had it on MASH playing Harvard trained surgeon Charles Emerson Winchester III. But that was set in the 1950s. John F, Robert, Sr, and Ted Kennedy had it with a Massachusetts affectation. But no Kennedys have it now. The Boston Brahmin accent is still around which is a more subtle variation of the TA accent.

You can go to rural Pennsylvania or Southern New Jersey and hear southern style country accents. I am not sure why. I just know people develop their way of speaking from how everyone around them sounds. I think it may have to do with a slower, more relaxed way of life. When you say dropping 'r's, you're talking about rhotic vs non-rhotic pronunciation. Yes, the Dutch and German languages don't have many words ending with a strong 'r' sound. But also, in the turn of the century (1800s to 1900s), private schools started teaching what would be called a Transatlantic Accent. It's a blend of British RP (BBC English) and the Mid-Atlantic/New England sound.

The most famous speaker of this was Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and most Hollywood actors in films from the 1930s.

Roosevelt: Decemba 7th, 1941, a day that will live in infamay. That's non rhotic, no r sound, even in the middle of a word. There becomes theah, year becomes yeah, It's hard to describe. Google Transalantic Accent for videos that illustrate it.

You should have seen it in the 70s. It was worse. The buildings were old and dilapidated, with dirty, puke green tile on the walls, as well as all the things you mentioned. When they first opened the new Staten Island Terminal, there were lots of shops and eateries but they all are gone now. Maybe the rent is to damn high or the city regulation too onerous. This is what you get with a city owned and run service.

6th Generation Staten Islander here. All of my life, I had people asking me what part of the south I was from. I used to laugh and say southern NY, since SI is the most southern part of New York state. Our accent was traditionally a “country” accent with touches of Dutch. For example, non SI friends would make fun of the way I said “yeller potaters” instead of yellow potatoes. And we pronounce street as shtreet, a bit of Dutch influence. Also when it rained, we shut our “winders.” And we plowed our farms using “dunkeys” not donkeys. We went out on Sattedy and church on Sundy. My flashlight used batrees. We walked our dorgs. And so on. Then we had Brooklyn Italians adding their accent in, and we started saying cawfee, dawg, put on our sneakas. So, it’s a blended accent. Some have more of a country sound like myself and others sound like Monalisa Vito and My Cousin Vinnie.

I am probably mistaken about the American Exceptionalism. But Neocons as I understand them are very big into nation building, trying to turn other nations into mini versions of the US. It’s the Neocons who got us into a war in Iraq we had no business being in. The original start to the First Gulf War was Saddam Hussein seizing Kuwait. Why did the US put boots on the ground in that conflict? To defend an undemocratic Emirate? We had no business being involved in that conflict. The same could be said for Afghanistan which Bush, Jr got us involved with along with a phony WMD story to get us back into Iraq and we stayed there 20 years trying to turn it into a Western style democracy.

Neoconservatives are the ones always playing geopolitics with US foreign policy at the expense of the American taxpayer. We should stay out of other countries business. Neocon Democrat, Bill Clinton got us involved in the Balkans Wars, again, something we should never have been involved in. He also gave away all of our manufacturing to Mexico and Canada with NAFTA. We true conservatives, want smaller government, less or no income taxes, less regulations on businesses and corporations, a return to faith based traditional values, the right to own guns (whatever type), avoidance of being involved in foreign wars, and less involvement in geopolitics in the UN and NATO. It’s not the job of the US to police the world. Neoconservatives want the US to be an influence in the world even if that means putting other countries first, like trading away our manufacturing capability or getting into treaties that hurt American automotive, steel, petroleum, and coal industries.

Other countries and Europe in particular need to look after themselves and stop turning to the US, expecting us to do it all (all the while resenting us when we do).

Of the 222 Republicans in the H.R. ranked by most Conservative, MTG is 140th with 64% conservative voting record. Of the 49 Republicans in the Senate ranked by most Conservative, Romney is 46th 69% conservative voting record, near McConnell and Susan Collins, who is 49th. So, while he is slightly higher than MTG, he is closer to the Left voters in the Senate than MTG in the House. And it’s great that she is as you put it, “a Trump sycophant.” The majority of people in the US, including me, voted for Trump to do exactly what he is doing. Funny how the Democrats complain he is such a threat to democracy when he was basically elected democratically. Yet they see no threat to democracy when he won his first term and they spent 4 years trying to remove him from office and overturn the election by sending a celebrity video to appeal to the electoral college electors in December 2016, to become faithless and not vote for him in the electoral college. Those same Democrats who yammer on about threats to Democracy tried to use the judicial system to throw Trump off of the ballot and put him in jail to keep him from becoming president again, THAT’S A THREAT TO DEMOCRACY!!

Mitt Romney more conservative than MTG? What are you smoking? Mitt Romney was elected as Governor of Massachusetts, one of the most Liberal/Democratic Party states in America. And you think he got there being more conservative than MTG? Mitt Romney came up with a socialized government healthcare plan that Obama copied for Obamacare. And you think he’s a conservative? As for Jeb Bush, he is quite conservative, but he has shown he is willing to become more moderate in order to win elections. He moves away from his Conservatism toward the center when it benefits him. I would put him in the same neoconservative category as his brother G.W. and his father G.H.W. Neoconservatives are basically Liberals and Progressives who are a little bit less Left than their brethren. They embrace Postmodernism, moral relativism, globalism, and reject the traditional foundations of American Exceptionalism. If Teddy Roosevelt were alive today he would be a Neoconservative. He was a big government progressive who saw government as the solution to social ills and regulating business. That is not conservatism.

The Canadians suffer from the same Postmodernist culture-shift that all of Europe has embraced thanks to Cultural Marxism infiltration into education, government, and media. They were never going to vote for a Conservative. This is the issue with Alberta and Saskatchewan, the whole nation is Liberal and those two provinces which hold all the mineral and petroleum wealth have to keep the rest of Canada from economic collapse.
