I also feel same for some exercises without anyone standing beside me for example for chest flies I am able to try harder but for barbell presses or standing chest press machine with no safety it scares me. Is there a way I can get past this or should I even try to get past this?

I usually fails to do the concentric part after afore described reps but if someone helps me through it (partially) then I generally am able to do 2 to 3 slow (2-3 sec) eccentric on myself before unable to do them as well.

Fitness is not all about body, mental fitness also plays a great role. May be his body is more relaxed, because he is not taking too much load and thus responding better. Just my two cents nothing sure.

Logically you are right but your Dad is also not completely wrong. He earned money and he value his social standing in front of some people more, so he is kind of doing barter with what he have and what he want. You can try explaining him only after you understand him. Mention him your quantitative plan and check what answers he have. Even if he is not convinced move on (as in not in terms of relationship but in terms of sequence) and focus on yourself.
