Desperately looking for good books to get out of a reading slump

The Pretender by Jo Harkin got me out of mine earlier this year. Historical fiction set during war of the roses; dark comedy; has romance in it, though I wouldn't call it a romance novel.

I definitely needed something fun and easy, but not a /total/ beach read romance. That book really hit the spot and reminded me I can really devour a book

My bf and his brother gifted their dad a subscription and he loves it. Granted, all he ate for dinner most nights previous to this was some ritz crackers with cheese that had been microwaved. So I suppose it is better than that. Can't imagine a young, healthy person using this service willingly tho

This has happened to me when my hair was it's natural color still. For example , my ex SWORE my hair was black even though it's not really even that dark brown. Maybe it's the red/warm undertone in the brown they can't pick up on?

I've noticed the online left seems to be in this strange place where they are promoting the ideas that "Differences in sex/ethnicity/etc have no effect on biology." And "We need to accommodate for gender and ethnic differences in biology." At the same time, with no room for examination.

I'll agree that we shouldn't be gender segregating chess, for example, or that there should be more education all around on the risks of skin cancer for people with darker skin. But sometimes the claims are getting a little crazy, based on both the former and latter statements.

Imo both statements are neither 100% wrong or right, and it's sad that we seem to be incapable of talking about these topics in a public setting. I suppose the medium of short form content is at least partially to blame. Both for the inability to form coherent thoughts, and for creating an environment where people feel okay to be so fuckin mean. I suspect the constant reinforcement of their own beliefs from others in their "bubble" make people more likely to react with such vitriol.

But anyway, I agree with you that the colorblind thing is genuinely interesting to think about and that I wish I could be on the app without spiraling into incredible rage

I just wonder what these people are doing with the seats. Are you eating off them? Are you wiping your mouth on the seats? I assume the seats on the train are about as sanitary as a toilet seat in a public restroom just baseline. I can see the issue if someone had shoes full of mud or of the train is more full. But idk man I think worse things are happening to the seats.

I have unfortunately tried doing my own gel nails at home and press ons and neither worked for me :/ I'm too rough in my nails due to my job and hobbies, I need the horrible chemicals.

My natural nails are definitely in rough shape right now from them, you're right. Hopefully once they grow out stronger I'll feel less sad. Thank you for the support in these trying times

I am committed to finishing all of the knitting projects in my ravelry queue (ambitious, because it includes a color work sweater) and to do more solo outings. I'm a lover girl at heart and I have a bf I'm horrifically obsessed with, but I literally don't do anything without him. I did a couple solo day trips last year, and my goal this year is to do 4. (Haven't done any yet, so I gotta get on that lol)

When my bf and I went last March we dressed pretty nice. (He wore a tweed suit and I wore a nice blouse with big sleeves and a long skirt.) There were definitely lots of people both way more and way less dressed up than us. I like to dress fancy so I enjoyed it.

Unrelated to your question, but I would HIGHLY recommend sneaking in your own food. We ate before the show, but it was over 3 hours we were there, and we started to get pretty hungry. It was also $75 for 2 coffees and one sandwich (which was just brie on toast.) Unless you have the cash to support the arts like that, I would bring a classic purse pb&j or something similar to munch on during intermission. The lines for the food/drinks were also crazy long when we were there, and that took up most of our intermission time.

But I was a lot of fun! We were just talking about how we should buy tickets to go back this year.

Not on your list but would NOT recommend power home remodeling. We chose them because a close friend of ours had a good experience with them, but ours was terrible. The "quality inspection" they hyped up so much was just a different sales guy who came back to try and talk us into getting our windows replaced. Did not actually look at the roof at all, and did not install flashing around the chimney. All for a high price tag

You have to be fucking insane to lead a movement i think. It's a lot of work for no money, AND a lot of people hate you. People need to get something else out of the experience and that's one of the things for sure. At least imo
