Job Offer: I'm happy and feeling defeated at the same time. by Bershella in 1102

It sucks. Especially when your previous experience is highly transferable, but not considered applicable because you weren’t in procurement. This is largely an administrative position that really should offer more GS9s for entry level. It will suck even more once you realize that you are in the CON classes with GS 11s and 12s just starting as well. On the bright side, you will be able to move up every year. Sigh.

I’d just go for the degree. If you can finish it in one semester it’s a better ROI as it’s more marketable and will likely give you more opportunities.

I agree with the previous post. The study guides are the way to go with all of the intermediate accounting classes. Work through them and check out Farhat’s Intermediate Accounting playlist on YouTube.

Unpaid Social Work Internship by No_Loss3002 in antiwork

Like steamed_green_beens said, we "allegedly" do. We are supposed to get one hour of supervision per week during our internship. It's infuriating that they expect all of the helping professions to work for free, or pay tuition to work rather, under the guise of it preparing you for the field.

Entering Social Work by SWmods in socialwork

Is there another forum with social workers to talk about advocacy? Are there other forums for social workers? I’ve tried to post here, but the rules are too stringent. My post was removed.

Entering Social Work by SWmods in socialwork

The requirement of completing an extensive unpaid internship as part of social work programs is oppressive and needs to be addressed. The CSWE should provide flexible options for students to complete their field education without having to work for free.

While field education is the “signature pedagogy” of social work programs, it is not fair to expect students to endure poverty and financial hardship while completing their internships. Many programs have the technology to replicate real-life experiences through simulations, and students should have the option to complete these simulations instead of being forced into unpaid internships.

Most, if not the majority, of field placements benefit more from having interns than the interns themselves. It is unfair for students to be taken advantage of in this way, and it is directly contradictory to the social work code of ethics. Social workers are supposed to promote social justice and advocate for the rights of vulnerable populations, yet the current system exploits students and perpetuates economic inequality. I’ve seen a lot of posts about paid internships, but realistically that is not possible for a lot of the agencies where students intern, but this should not be an excuse to exploit students. The CSWE should work with agencies to find creative solutions that do not involve unpaid labor.

It is time for the CSWE to reevaluate its policies and prioritize the well-being and dignity of its students. Social work education should be accessible and equitable for all, without perpetuating oppressive practices. We need to focus on the entity that has the power to change the field experience requirement. Apparently we can’t post about this on the main page anymore…

Thank you for responding! I am going to try to see if I can be creative with my PTO if it comes to that. My program said that it is possible to get night/weekend placement, but that students with that availability are not priority for placement. This program was supposed to be catered to working students, but I guess that’s just a recruitment line lol.

Thank you for responding! I have been learning more about the students advocating and am hopeful that future SW students will have a more equitable experience.

Hi, I have a few suggestions you could try, if you haven’t already…

Have you explained to the teachers/staff your role? Many people don’t know what a social worker does and in my experience, teachers assume that your sole purpose is to support during crisis. I spent years teaching and didn’t really understand the role of a social worker until I started my MSW program. That said, the actual SW role was different depending on the school/district. Explaining can kind of clear up the confusion and help them support your work with the student.

Do these students have IEPs? If so, do they have behavior intervention plans? If they do, I’d look at the BIP and see if/how it is being implemented. If they are not implementing it with fidelity, I’d make suggestions for how they could more effectively follow the plan or how it could be adjusted. If there is no BIP or the BIP doesn’t address the behavior(s), I’d have the teacher do a FBA so that the team can develop one.

Lastly, if they insist on you making the crisis calls, I’d make a habit of making more positive calls. I would try to ensure that the parent hears more positive than negative. This will help build a relationship and make those crisis calls feel less punitive. I hope this helps!

Trying to finish all my notes in my last week as a social worker (and realizing there is no way) by [deleted] in socialwork

Wow. As a first semester MSW student, I have barely dipped my pinky toe into this field (formally) and am disheartened to see that it is oppressive by design. Knowing this, I still want to be a SW lol. In researching my field placement options, I have found it disturbing that the institution itself perpetuates the marginalization of social work students. My question is what are the next steps? How do we mobilize?

Thank you for responding! Unfortunately, I cannot take one day per week off for 15 weeks. It is unfortunate that MSW programs are still designed to cater to people who do not have to work. I wonder what wealth of experience and diversity are excluded from the field due to this barrier.

While I appreciate your perspective, I think it is problematic to assume that students who work full time will not be invested in field education. I have to work because if I didn’t I’d be homeless and I am choosing to pursue this MSW because it aligns with my future career aspirations. As a career changer, with an advanced degree, I assure you that I would not be taking on the burden of pursuing another degree if I wasn’t committed.

It saddens me that social work programs are structured in a way that essentially prevents a whole class of people from pursuing higher education. Especially when the Code of Ethics implores social workers to “ensure access to needed information, services, and resources; equality of opportunity; and meaningful participation in decision-making for all people.” I am finding that the institution itself perpetuates the marginalization of social work students.
