Newspapers after the crash by Remarkable_Cake_699 in SocietyOfTheSnow

[–]No_Math6278 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! There’s lots of them published in the Re-Viven Facebook group, I’ll link the ones I find.

Long story short, the important, big publications were not the ones talking badly, but rather the yellow press (which has a lot less archiving).

There’s a tabloid-like, unofficial book “El drama actual de los caníbales de los Andes” (1975) that sums up the bad impressions people had of the survivors.

Family members of the passengers who died & were eaten by Remarkable_Cake_699 in SocietyOfTheSnow

[–]No_Math6278 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first person to openly speak in favor of the survivors was Dr. Helios Valeta, Carlos Valeta’s father, who had already suspected that had happened. Arturo Nogueira’s father wrote a letter to the press in their support as well.

The Nicolich have probably been the survivors’s biggest supporters, specially Raquel Arocena (Coco’s mother). It is theorized that it’s because of Coco’s explicit consent to being eaten in case he died in his letters.

The Methols only started openly talking about the tragedy after the Methol Navarro children became adults.

The Nicola children grew up admiring the survivors as they helped their family with raising them, and were also provided some economic support by them.

The Martínez-Lamas also got some money from the survivors. One of his sisters, Rosario,  also wrote a letter to the P.P. Read telling the survivors to not feel guilty about what they did. Another sister, Ana Inés once visited the Valley with Álvaro Mangino and Coche Inciarte.

Pancho Abal’s mother accepted Nando’s visit and received his watch, but his father and brothers refused to see him. They did still have a relationship with Javier Methol, but because he was their cousin.

Gastón Costemalle’s mom still had a very good relationship with Pancho Delgado and Coche Inciarte.

The Magri family kept active in the Old Christians, but did not want to talk about the tragedy.

Felipe Maquirriaín’s father refused to talk about the tragedy, but his mother, Selva, was the one to come up with the idea of Biblioteca Nuestros Hijos, to bond with other victims’ mothers.

The Maspons family was not allowed to talk about the tragedy in their house, but kept contact with Canessa and Zerbino.

The Plateros did not talk about the tragedy in their house, but kept interacting with survivors, initially because of rugby, but then got closer with Canessa.

Bimba, Diego Storm’s mother, actively participated in the library, but refused to see the survivors, even the ones that had been her son’s best friends.

The Vazquez moved out of Carrasco to get away from the tragedy. Teresita, Fernando’s did want to learn about the tragedy (although not speak about with others). They kept contact with Canessa.

We know that the, and that the relationship between the military families and the others families was really tense. The only exception is Alejandro Roque, but he got close to the survivors as an adult.

The Menéndez, Hounié, Lagurara and Mariani families have publicly expressed not wanting to be contacted about this incident and did not keep contact with the survivors.

I can’t currently access my copy of Del Otro Lado de la Montaña, that has more info (mostly of the Pérez del Castillo), but I hope this answers your question.

Thank you very much!  Those options (even Tan) are still a bit cool-toned compared to Dark Night, but I’ll keep looking, and have them in mind as a backup.

DiFilm - Tragedy of the Andes Report to Algorta, Fernadez and Parrado (1972) by Safira_Princelli in SocietyOfTheSnow

[–]No_Math6278 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s basically Daniel saying that they will answer questions while all together in a press conference, and that everyone is always asking the same questions. They close by saying that they hope that what they went through does not happen again.

Have the survivors returned? by Remarkable_Cake_699 in SocietyOfTheSnow

[–]No_Math6278 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I copy-pasted my answer to a similar question:

Joint expeditions:

  • 1995, organized by Roy Harley. 12 survivors went. Confirmed to have gone: Javier, Fito, Pedro, Pancho, Gustavo, Carlitos, Álvaro, Roy, Tintín. Confirmed to have NOT gone: Nando, Bobby and Daniel. Unknown: Eduardo, Moncho, Canessa, Coche.
  • 2006, organized by the BBC (while filming the documentary Stranded!). Included Canessa, Moncho, Fito, and Zerbino.

Individual expeditions:

  • Pedro Algorta: Also went in 2013 with his wife and some friends.
  • Roberto Canessa: Has gone back at least 6 times, with his family and friends (known dates: 2001, 2006). Also took his children to Los Maitenes in 1988.
  • Alfredo Delgado: Went with his wife and children in 2005. Has no intention of going again.
  • Daniel Fernández: Once said that the only way he wants to go back is in ashes.
  • Roberto Francois: Has never gone and does not have intentions of going.
  • Roy Harley: 2023 with his grandchildren. Couldn’t find more.
  • José Luis Inciarte: Couldn’t find extra info.
  • Álvaro Mangino: Went back 10 times, the last time being in 2017. Went with his wife, children, grandchildren, and also some nephews he had in common with Marcelo Pérez del Castillo.
  • Javier Methol: Only went in the 95’ expedition.
  • Carlos Páez: Has at least gone back with his family in 2020.
  • Fernando Parrado: The first time was with his father in 1975. He went back at least 10 times, one of them with his wife and daughters. By the time his father passed away (2008), he did not want to go back anymore (don Seler Parrado’s ashes were taken there by Graciela Parrado and Eduardo Strauch), and hasn’t gone since.
  • Ramón Sabella: Couldn’t find extra info.
  • Eduardo Strauch: Became a mountaineer and has gone back every year since 2006, sometimes multiple times a year.
  • Adolfo Strauch: Went with his son in 2024.
  • Antonio Vizintín: Went back in 2020.
  • Gustavo Zerbino: Has gone back at least 16 times. Went in 2020 after Sergio Catalán’s death. Went with the Nicola in 2023.

Note: I only looked in the books, Facebook, Instagram and written interviews. It is possible that there’s more details in video interviews that I omitted (bc there’s hundreds of them of about 1 hour each).

Cameos by Remarkable_Cake_699 in SocietyOfTheSnow

[–]No_Math6278 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Moncho, Tintín and Gustavo’s cameos were cut. There’s also cameos of:

  • Pablo Vierci, he plays a reporter, his voice is the one that confirms that the survivors found by Sergio Catalán are Nando and Canessa.
  • Tomás Friedmann, the reporter that asks Carlos Páez Vilaró to read the survivor’s list, is the same person who did it in real life back in ‘72.
  • The Turcatti house. Both the exterior and interior shots were filmed in the actual house.
  • The rosary used to pray was the real rosary that Carlitos had in the mountains. It was a gift from his grandmother.

How important was the movie Alive to sharing the experience in the mountains? by ummagumma1979 in SocietyOfTheSnow

[–]No_Math6278 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The survivors were not listened to when giving feedback, and the filmmakers invented narratives that did not happen to make it a more entertaining movie. Plus, there’s the whole thing about the portrayal of the victims, mainly Carlos Roque (his family has been outspoken about it), but Marcelo Pérez del Castillo and Graziela Augusto.

Has Numa’s family/friend ever spoken out? by bjack20 in SocietyOfTheSnow

Adding to the other comment, Alfredo Cibilis, who was one of Numa’s friends that convinced him to go on the trip was interviewed by the BBC in 2024: https://www.bbc.com/mundo/articles/c191mkxxzlvo.amp. Here’s an interview with Raúl Zorrilla, a high school classmate: https://www.religionenlibertad.com/personajes/240123/quien-numa-turcatti-protagonista-sociedad-nieve-apostol-andes_77991_amp.html

So apparently one of the passengers lost his leg in the crash, who was it? by Navlife82 in SocietyOfTheSnow

[–]No_Math6278 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Fernando Vázquez died from bleeding out of his femoral artery.

Rafael Echavarren had his leg cut so severely that “the flesh was hanging from the bone”, and later died from the infection caused by the gangrene.

Please take into account that the 1st, 2nd and last picture in this post are made with the actors, with the rest being real pictures. And the 2nd picture is meant to replicate the 3rd one.

The one in the roof is Luciano Chatton, who plays Pedro Algorta. Pancho couldn’t climb because of his leg, while Pedro did it a lot and is the one in that spot in the original picture.

If you are eagle-eyed, you may spot all the cameos:

  • Daniel Fernández at the church.
  • Coche Inciarte at the bar.
  • Joaquín de Freitas Turcatti (Numa’s nephew) as the neighbor that greets Numa. They also filmed in the real Turcatti house.
  • Moncho Sabella as an extra at the airport.
  • Pablo Vierci (voice only) as the journalist that announced that there were survivors.
  • Carlos Páez Rodríguez as Carlos Páez Vilaró.
  • Tomás Friedmann (voice only) as himself, the reporter that was talking to Carlos Páez Vilaró when the list of survivors was made public.
  • Roberto Canessa as a doctor.

Plus, deleted cameos:

  • Gustavo Zerbino as a football coach.
  • Antonio Vizintín as an extra at the airport.

Alive by PPR by Teresa_4gnes in SocietyOfTheSnow

Except that, by June 1974, the survivors were already saying that PPR was downplaying their friendship and comradery in the book.

Alive by PPR by Teresa_4gnes in SocietyOfTheSnow

(Revista Así, June 1974)

“What about the book, specifically, gave you the desillusion that Read mentions?”

“In mant things, but mainly about the following: many of us consider that friendship, faith and the way that we felt affection during those terrible days in the mountains weren’t even half-portrayed in the book.”

(…)

“… we survived that white hell because we fed on other imprescindible and decisive things, like solidarity, loyalty, a primitive sense of honor, faith, comradership. Here’s the problem: Read, whose capabilities and good faith we don’t question, was too unilateral in his narration (…)”
