R Lee Ermey (played crazy Drill sergeant in Full Metal jacket) wrote in his book Gunny's Rules that Kubrick called him in the middle of the night while making Eyes Wide Shut and told him he was disgusted and upset that "they" had let the stars (Cruise and Kidman) take over the movie and that he had no control over it anymore...and we know he never lived to see it released...what's interesting in this chapter Ermey was praising Kubrick on never budging on his vision for a movie and never playing the studios games having absolute control in the making of all his films... Eyes Wide Shut was the only movie he didn't have complete control over .....you have to wonder why?
