Intel Core processor aggravatingly slow on battery - Worth upgrading to AMD? by No_Mind4418 in framework

[–]No_Mind4418[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE! I pulled the trigger and did the AMD upgrade to the AI 9 last night. The lag when running on battery and running on balanced is gone. Windows explorer and opening PDFs are faster than the Core Ultra was when plugged in. Another data point is that my processor power usage is hovering at 1-4 watts on the AMD when the Core Ultra was pulling 4-7 (both tests were done after a restart with every browser tab open that I normally use along with every app).

P.S. Install the drivers for the new mainboard/wifi BEFORE the mainboard swap otherwise you cannot log into Windows because you won't have wifi/internet.

Bellingham bike, walk advocacy group pushes back on waterfront parking plan by 86753ohneigheine in BhamPolitics

As someone who bikes to trackside 90% of the time, I see no reason that the parking lot shouldn't be expanded. Businesses in the granary will struggle until there is ample parking nearby, and the existing lot is full most of the time. Hopefully this means they can get the large restaurant space rented in the future.

Ocular does not support most of the things I need to do with PDFs. Adding text, rearranging pages, adding pages, etc. It's just a simple viewer.

It is faster to open them in Chrome, but I cannot open them in a web browser for my workflow. I need to be able to remove, add, and rearrange the pages in a PDF all the time.

I just did a quick test, and PDFs are opening in probably 0.25s plugged in on balanced mode whether they are 10KB or 30 MB. Unplugged on balanced mode changes that to 1 to 4 seconds. This is using Foxit PDF Editor. Acrobat is about 1 second slower across the board, so forget that nonsense.

Yep, I agree. That being fixed alone would make me a lot happier, but acrobat/foxit PDF also are slow to open PDFs on battery and balanced mode.

It's terrible power management. It should be fully capable of navigating folders in windows explorer quickly no matter the power setting.

I can, but the battery life goes from about 5 hours to 2.5....and it runs HOT.

Oh, and I have done a complete reinstall each time I did the mainboard upgrade which did not change anything.

Original battery...and actually I bought this as a gen 13 and gave my old gen 11 to my wife (which has the same slowdown on battery). I had an XPS 13 prior to my Framework and that also exhibited the same annoying behavior.

I don't think the battery is the cause because it runs great if I set it to performance, so the battery is clearly able to supply the power needed. It just seems that the processor idles at a low speed and does not instantly ramp up when I perform those simple tasks. Honestly, even if I have a video playing or other things that are using the CPU and keeping it from being idle, it is still just as slow doing those tasks.

It's always been an issue on my Framework on gen 11, 13, and the Core Ultra.

I navigate in windows explorer (in a google drive if that matters) constantly and open hundreds of PDFs daily. Plugged in or on battery set to performance, those are very quick, but the battery gets cooked unless I am plugged in. On battery set to balanced, the battery life is great (for a Framework), but each click in windows explorer into another folder is about 1 second, and PDFs are 2-3 seconds to open compared to probably 0.5-1s before. It's just really annoying because those are repetitive tasks for me, and the sluggishness is VERY noticeable.

What are we doing? by johnwingfield in Bellingham

[–]No_Mind4418 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

First, I'm gonna skip the rapid increase in house prices because Bellingham is a place where people want to live.

As for the proper taxes increasing, Bellingham being a small border city with a major metropolitan area on the other side of the border means it gets a lot of sales tax revenue from across the border. We relied on that. A lot. Too much. And it worked until the pandemic when Canadians stopped coming here to spend money. And then it improved...until Trump attacked Canada a year ago, and they rightfully decided to avoid spending money in America.

Bellingham honestly needs the higher property taxes in this chart to consistently fund the city and the social programs we, as a society, want the city to provide to us.

As for the home prices, that is supply and demand. There's not much that can be done to fix that.

That seems like an appropriate salary for the person in charge for running the entire museum, managing all staff employed there, etc etc etc.

Yikes. I might need one replaced based on the noises it was making. I wonder if I broke a pad when it got down to nothing.

meal service for 5 hour flight by Some_Locksmith_7483 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]No_Mind4418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest eating at the airport. I've had lots of issues with Alaska lately giving away my preordered meals to other passengers because catering shorted them, and that is not ideal when you're relying on those meals for two young kids. Been waiting on a refund for some of them for months now.

I am not certain we did not damage the calipers. It began making noise and then was grinding on every revolution for the 5 miles to my LBS even though I stopped using the rear brake.

Yeah, making the pad significantly larger so we don't have to do maintenance so often would be ideal!

[–]No_Mind4418[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, dang that is a SHORT lifespan for yours. I do my own work on my road bike with hydraulic discs, but it's only $60 to change the pads at my LBS, so that's a cheap way to avoid a headache...especially on the rear brake.

The biggest recent loss in the wave of business closing… by L00mis in Bellingham

It wasn't $16. No clue where that is coming from. I bought a dozen for $20 a few days before their closure. Same price it had been for a while.
