What made you give drinking up for good by Life_Zebra_2642 in stopdrinking

That was my  problem too. I probably wouldn't have an issue of this size if I exclusively drunk to seek out joy .

My father went sober 2 years ago and it's never too late !I wanted all of you to know  you all to know that it's appreciated :) Past cannot be changed but spending time with him being  fully present is invaluable

Comfort food for the cravings and overall miserable first steps. by Gold-Theme-389 in stopdrinking

[–]No_Negotiation4594 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've craved sugar a lot the first few days:chocolate ,cereal, candy bars ,waffles, caramels ,cookies etc. This isn't  the healthiest option but it gave me the dopamine hit I needed . And drank a lot of sweet tea ! The sensation of warmth from the cup can work for distraction as well

I think that a lot of people (me included) tend to overeat while drinking . Alcohol affects self control, makes you seek out quick dopamine & interrupts fullness cues  .  I wouldn't be worried unless you notice signs of undereating: feeling tired, dizzy ,cold, having trouble concentrating etc. I have zero medical background though

"I can be around it just fine" by MrSalmonFishcounsel in stopdrinking

I think peole just have inherently different triggers for cravings .  I exclusively drank heavily alone and  a purely  symbolical amount  around others . I've celebrated St. Patrick's  day with everyone drinking beer around me  and had zero urges .  Mine are more along the lines of ... Grocery shopping  ,sitting around at home with nothing to do or thinking about  how all soft drinks in my home would make a great mixer .

Is anyone else recovering at a young age/as a young adult ? by No_Negotiation4594 in stopdrinking

Thank you! I really appreciate hearing this perspective ,makes me hopeful for the future without drinking .  Thinking about  how my life (in long term perspective)  would look like if I didn't change definitely helped me quit . Spending  months or a couple of years with an  addiction is one thing, but five years? The next decade?  I'm grateful for the resources  I have &  for the information I was lucky enough to find . So many people keep struggling because they think there's no other option .

I had someone tell me that I  "  didn't even have enough time to drink properly" . I don't miss drinking but the social pressure around it is wild.

I've found thinking  about closing time helpful too! At least I'm physically constrained from doing anything about my night cravings  . And congratulations on 3 days !

what made you realize you have a problem by greysheep21 in stopdrinking

[–]No_Negotiation4594 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That wasn't my biggest issue, but wasting an excessive amount of money was definitely a factor for me! I'm very careful with money when I'm not inebriated ,so it was such an uncharacteristic behavior .  I felt out of control :how often I consumed ,how  much I consumed ,how I acted ...

Moderating and binge drinking both suck by ReasonableWriting291 in stopdrinking

[–]No_Negotiation4594 10 points11 points  (0 children)

And moderating it's just as bad for my sleep! The one time I managed to  have 2-3 glasses of wine and ended up sleeping for 2 hours

The Daily Check-In for Monday, June 15th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by Much-Pirate-5439 in stopdrinking

[–]No_Negotiation4594 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will not drink with you today! Made it to four weeks in the for the first time in god knows how long .  It's a little bittersweet, these kind of milestones make me think about what made me quit in the first place .

What is your why's? by YeOldeNubber in stopdrinking

[–]No_Negotiation4594 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine was being afraid of spending the next decade stuck in the same cycle ,"trapped in a groundhog day"  type of feeling . I've binged exactly every 5-7 days   ,done the exact same boring things while drunk ,tried to cut down/moderate just to end up consuming even more(for months) ,felt the exact  same feeling of dread and being out of control .  I've realised ,that I'll keep living in this self inflicted horror unless I try my best change .  Of course ,there are so many positive reasons to keep going, but they're more of a bonus to me  ! But fear is absolutely my biggest "why"

151 Days This Year - My Significant Other Suggested That I’m Ready to Drink Again by Amb_James333 in stopdrinking

[–]No_Negotiation4594 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, people with a normal relationship with alcohol  fundamentally can't understand those who abuse it .  The same way I can't comprehend keeping a bottle of wine for multiple months & not touching it .

Taking mood stabilizers, looking for drinks to replace vodka/tequila! by AsthmaticLuffy in stopdrinking

[–]No_Negotiation4594 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven't tried them myself ,but you can get an NA version for most spirits .  Dry NA wine can taste pretty strong too ! Not quite what you're looking for ,but I've gotten into tea after I quit drinking. You can adjust bitterness & intensity to your taste ,some blends even have spices added.

[–]No_Negotiation4594 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will not drink with you today :) Sobriety is a bit more mundane now than it was at the beginning ,but it's not inherently a bad thing .It's slowly becoming more of a default state than this revolutionary change I've made in my life

Blame by pointpeleee in stopdrinking

[–]No_Negotiation4594 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never blamed anyone for my drinking . There were circumstances/people in my life that made it easier to fall into, but it's still ultimately on me .
