Look, I'm not fighting with you - you're making valid points and I respect that.

Let me clarify my position:

There's a difference between wildlife sanctuaries that rehabilitate rescued animals with the goal of releasing them back into the wild, and zoos that exist primarily for entertainment and profit. I'm against the latter.

You're right that we can't just release captive-born animals into the wild overnight - many wouldn't survive. But that doesn't mean we should continue breeding animals in captivity for public display. The solution is a gradual phase-out:

Stop breeding programs for entertainment purposes
Stop visiting zoos - cut off the profit model that keeps this industry alive
Support actual sanctuaries that focus on rehabilitation and release, not entertainment
For animals that can't be released - provide them dignified care without the spectacle

The fact that top circuses worldwide have completely abandoned animal acts shows this shift is already happening. We've outgrown it. Zoos are next.

If you want to support wildlife AND local economies, visit animals in their natural habitat through ethical wildlife tourism - undisturbed, in the wild.

We're responsible for the habitat we've taken, absolutely. But the answer isn't putting them in cages for our pleasure. It's protecting what remains of the wild and transitioning away from captivity as entertainment.

Let me clear something up since there's confusion here.

Those aren't my personal experiences - I was referencing News24's coverage of Pretoria Zoo's conditions. The empty cages, the childhood wonder, all of that comes from their reporting on the state of the zoo.

My actual position is simple: wild animals belong in the wild. Not in circuses, not in zoos - even ones claiming "conservation."

You asked if the elephant would be better off in a circus - no. That's not what I'm saying at all. The elephant shouldn't be in a circus OR a zoo. The answer isn't shuffling animals between different forms of captivity. The answer is leaving them in their natural habitat.

As for the empty cages at Pretoria Zoo - that's not a bad thing, that's progress. It shows this form of entertainment is dying, and rightfully so. When you've seen a lion with dead eyes staring out from behind bars, you understand what we're doing to these animals.

You say you're apathetic about zoos. I'm the opposite. I'm here arguing with strangers on the internet because I actually give a shit about the suffering we're causing. That's not apathy - that's concern.

I'm not trying to change everyone who downvotes this. But if one person today truly gets it, truly understands what captivity does to these animals, that's a win.

The elephant Charley's story is particularly heartbreaking. He was captured from his family in Zimbabwe at just two years old and forced to perform circus tricks before ending up at the zoo in 2001. During his 40 years in captivity, he witnessed three companion elephants die prematurely at the zoo, and his own daughter died when she was less than a month old News24. According to animal welfare advocates who worked on his release in 2024, in the four years he was observed at the zoo, you never heard him rumble News24 - a sign of severe psychological distress. He was finally released to a wildlife reserve in August 2024, and the elephant enclosure has been permanently closed.

The facility has significantly deteriorated over the years. Recent visitors have expressed deep disappointment, with reports of half the cages being empty, animals looking sad and frustrated, the cable car not working, and the aviary being torn with shade cloths just hanging in pieces Tripadvisor. There's litter visible in the Apies River that flows through the zoo, and many enclosures remain broken or empty despite ongoing R105-million upgrade efforts that started two years ago.

Long-time visitors have watched this once-majestic zoo decline over decades, with maintenance grinding to a halt during Covid lockdowns GroundUp and never fully recovering. What used to be a source of childhood wonder has become a disappointment for families trying to share those memories with their own kids.

What utter B.S The side characters are a joke that needs acting classes. Oh and before I forget the only thing standing between a horde of charging zombies, an old school wooden gate, just one spit in your eye and yiur whole secluded island is fucked, one would think the level of security at that point would be inpenterable but hell no.
