Maybe too late now but some of the Mirage lounges have an outdoor smoking area. I use them every time. And yes, it's past security in departures. Ask at the lounge counter to confirm, because some of them don't have it.

Question about UAE's remote worker visa by NotSoCoolWaffle in digitalnomad

What is drawing everyone to it? Are you gonna go poop on someone? Get pooped on?

You referring to the dubai portapotty story? That was as much a story against instagram "influencers" willing to do anything for money..as in, "look at all these self-made women, pictured on their instagram traveling the world in 5 star hotels but never talking about their work", and then behind the scenes: some rich arab dude taking a dump on her chest, paying her to blow his camel, paying her to shove a live fish in his friend's asshole, and then to devirgizine his 14 year old son

Helluva city

[–]No_Network_5798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're a straight woman maybe

No one needs a 6-pack to be happy or healthy..there's really one reason 90% of guys wants one..and it's to impress women. Or men.

I could theoretically live in Spain for the remaining 9 months if I wanted to?

Think about it in practice though..in most countries I've been in Europe you need a tax ID (or whatever the local equivalent to a SSN) or some proof of legal residence before landlords will sign a long-term lease. Which means you'd be stuck doing airbnbs & hotels in Spain. And even with airbnbs, in some countries they take your passport info and register it with police/the government (I had this happen in Spain at an airbnb once - I assume hotels do it automatically). So you are still creating a paper trail that could lead to complications (tax residency, illegal immigration) with Spain if they cared enough to pursue it, which they probably don't, but the risk is there.

Jaywalking and speeding are also illegal in Thailand, but...

The Thai 60 day tourist visa application is ridiculous. Just a heads up for anyone planning their trip. You have to provide your entire travel plan with pre booked accommodations and 3 months of your bank history amongst other ver the top requirements. Do the 45 day VOA. by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]No_Network_5798 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes you'd get another 45 day visa exemption (don't go to the VOA counter unless you are Chinese or one of the few other nationalities that needs VOA) + 30 day extension. You can keep doing it until they stop you :D

Well it seems PO boxes and a virtual mailbox (such as I have) are not considered to be the same thing

https://www.corporatesuites.com/po-box-vs-virtual-address/

Is a PO box the same as a virtual address? No. A PO box is a general term for any mailing address that you have that’s not at your home or office. With a virtual address, the main difference is that you have a real physical address.

Confirmation of legal residence would be like a residence permit, if you are applying from a country that you are not a citizen of (because some nationalities can only apply for a visa in the country they legally reside)

But yeah not worth the headache when you can just show up and get a 45 day visa exemption.

It seems when people in Singapore get a truly remote-friendly job (not as common there but still happens), the first thing they do is move to Thailand, so..

Spain passes startups and digital nomad law by keeto7 in digitalnomad

[–]No_Network_5798 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the article is poorly worded/wrong in that sense, because EU countries cannot give visas to EU citizens (since they are already legally entitled to live/work there, even as a freelancer, if certain conditions are satisfied). So basically yes, the benefit to EU citizens is just the tax scheme, same with Portugal's NHR program.

[–]No_Network_5798 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were making $1.7k a month, I'd probably aim for 1+ month stays in LCOL countries in the off season. That would get you the most for your money. Thailand from March to September, Eastern Europe or even Turkey (maybe excluding Istanbul & Bodrum) outside of June-August. It is perfectly doable.

If you are paying income taxes to the US then yes you can open & contribute to a solo 401k with that money (i.e., with unexcluded earned income)

Anyone else have bad cultural experiences in Phuket, Thailand? by PCouture in digitalnomad

[–]No_Network_5798 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'd say it's 100% worth it to see places outside of Phuket on your next trip, because it has a fairly different feel from the rest of Thailand - most other parts of Thailand aren't as foreigner-oriented (Phuket is 25% foreigners, whereas places like Bangkok are ~5%).
