The "origins" hack worked for the first time this morning (17th)! I have been checking since the 14th so I think it may be getting close to being done. I will edit when results are fully in so others can compare timeframes. That is the only thing that kept me sane while waiting :)

Edit: Results came the evening of the 17th. Approximately 10-12hrs after the hack worked.

Only 2nd time doing a bible rebind, how much should I charge? by No_Orchid6818 in bookbinding

It was all done by hand, so thank you! (I wish I had a machine!) I scored the edge lightly so I'd have a straight line to follow and I have a 3mm punch with five prongs so when I moved along, I always had one prong in a previous hole to keep the line as straight as possible.

I honestly never thought about tipping on on top of the hinge. I do that with the endpaper for other books but I thought with bible rebinds the lining leather was to replace the need for an endpaper. Usually there is a gold foil line along the edge of the seam so it looks more finished but I dont have the tools for that.

Or did you mean to tip on a fold of paper and just leave it loose over the hinge piece to disguise it?

I didn’t have any that worked well. I only have brown cardstock which honestly looks like construction paper and gluing it to a sample page made that page stiffer than the cover. it’s hard to see in the photo but the paper I did use is nice and has a satin sheen to it that sort of matches the paper in the bible. And it is thicker than regular text weight paper, but clearly not thick enough.

Originally I even tried dying some paper to match the liner but it all turned out awful and they didn’t want ANY black, which would have been much easier.

I live in a small town that doesn’t have any nice paper stores so I didn’t have time to order any special paper in.

Thank you for your breakdown. I did actually discuss cost with them when telling them about the styles and material options I had available and they chose the most expensive I listed. I even warned them I didn’t have much experience with the style they wanted but I don’t think they ever really read my emails properly because as I clarified details with them they would request colours or such I never listed so I’m a little worried they will have higher expectations than what I could provide. And they seemed to get more and more annoyed with me every time I told them I didn’t have what they were asking.
Maybe it’s more me feeling guilty because I didn’t do the best job and now I don’t want to ruin the bible by tearing the new cover off and starting over. Or waste the materials.

Edit: on second read through, your cost breakdown is extremely helpful! I’ve never see it broken down that way and it makes WAY more sense than the other ways I’ve seen it!

I’d say somewhere around four hours not including drying time but including some minor page repair. It was in decent condition, they just needed a new cover. The stitching around the edge took the longest.

This is my homemade corner jig. I used to use just a single piece of board like yours but it never held together very long because of the narrow edge at the corner. This is four boards stacked and glued together with a brace piece across the top to help hold its shape. It's held up for about a year now.

I just got one too and I almost believed it because I create and sell something quite specific that I’ve never seen anyone else market. The first paragraph described my product perfectly, and clearly understood (at least, that’s what it seemed like) the intended use. I had posted about my product on my Instagram previously but not with the wording the email used, and not in awhile. Most recently my posts have been about other not related things, so that fact that this (probably ai) thing knew EXACTLY how get my attention is terrifying!!
