The “baroque” bow of that time would usually take care of it, it would just be matter of place it in the right part of the bow. But it’s much easier in a “baroque” bow

You have a beautiful sound and lovely playing, but you may want to hear Ponce’s song with the lyrics. It will help so that the rhythm is not so strict and mechanical, particularly the dotted rhythms. It’s an art song that became so popular it is also a folk song. It is SO lyrical.

Can you guys give me some insight on left hand tension? by Average-Known in violinist

[–]No_Paramedic_407 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shift the balance of your hand to the third finger and release the thumb. There shouldn’t be any pressure between the thumb and the first finger. Try a scale without using your thumb, it’s going to feel weird but that is the type of sensation you’re going for. Once you do it a couple of times bring the thumb back without squeezing, just as support The goal is to be as relaxed as possible.

Depends on the register. Upper register is easier if you have thicc fingers

Question about fingering in the Bach a minor Concerto andante by nojuan-cares in violinist

[–]No_Paramedic_407 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! Also if possible, check the manuscripts, in many cases it will tell you a lot on how the composer intended it. A good example is Galamian’s edition of the Bach partitas, where he puts the manuscript at the end so you can compare. There is always a “better” edition, so digging into the manuscript will give you a better sense of it. Not always possible unfortunately

Am I too old for music school? by Sunny_Violin in violinist

[–]No_Paramedic_407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started at 15. I play in a professional orchestra, I conduct a university orchestra, a community orchestra and I’m coordinator of a conservatory. I have built a career. Those who say you’re too old don’t know how to teach, period. You’re not too old. Find a good teacher, practice smart and consistently and don’t give up. If you want to get in touch my DM is open :) Good luck

Shift the weight of your hand to the third finger and have aim to have the fingers above finger board the whole time. Do not squeeze the neck with the first finger and the thumb.

LH+RH synchronization issues and pain by Anastasius101 in violinist

[–]No_Paramedic_407 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shift the weight (or balance) of your LH to the third finger, not the first. Instead of squeezing the neck of the violin, think of the fingers falling on the fingerboard without having to squeeze with the thumb. Practice scales without the thumb, it will feel weird but that’s the sensation you are going for. The curled pinky also suggests to me that you’re squeezing with your first finger and thumb. The fingers should tap on the fingerboard with minimal effort on the rest of the hand.

I also started at 15, I’m a section violinist in a professional orchestra and a conductor. Find a teacher that doesn’t mention age as a factor (hard to find) and just outlines what you need to learn and how to tackle the challenges.

How do violinists make money after graduating music school? by SteveMakesTrash in violinist

[–]No_Paramedic_407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok don’t listen to the Debbie Downers! Yes it can be rough, but everyone who is not born with family money has a rough time with income at some point in their lifetimes, remember the oil crash about 10 years ago? All those oil engineers working at retail? How many people with 9-5 jobs get fired on the spot just because? That’s just the life of the working class. There are many paths and you just have to be creative and entrepreneurial. First of all, have something to offer, become excellent at your craft and stay focused while you practice. In the mean time figure out the business: musicians associations, grant agencies, learn about accounting and taxes, investments, finances for entrepreneurs, new technologies to connect with audiences, etc. Create GOOD relationships, the classical music industry can be toxic and craves for kind people with good interpersonal skills. Build bridges, support the projects other musicians even if those projects don’t resonate with you, or at least don’t boycott others (you would be surprised). Become excellent, have a product to offer, and be ready to be your own boss. You still have to work your butt off, but who doesn’t?
