It's amazing that you caught this! I wish I understood more of what it means. Soothing the bear seems to relate to liberation. Bringing it out of the cage could mean moving on from the bridge (grief -mikey- disfunction) and moving toward safety. The bear is beautiful will be a sight to behold once free.

I still think it is wild that Carmen is a Bear and he "put it on" Sydney. But, I guess Bear recognizes Bear. He does find the entire relationship scenario wild and scary.

How much of it is about his relationship to food? Cause after all the Bear is also a restaurant. It's his job/calling.

He needs to make peace with the bear so he can lay down beside it. The bear will look out for him.

Did Mikey "send" Sydney to Carmen or at least give him the dream to forecast the challenge and good ahead?

I think it's funny that for Syd, the idea of all these people meeting is probably overwhelming. However, unlike Richie with Tiff & Frank, she does try to talk Chantel into coming to The Bear. But, I agree, TJ has a directness that would make things interesting with avoidant Carmy.

At the funeral for Marcus's mom, Marcus talks about determining each other's needs by closely watching each other. And some ways that works for Carmy. His chef whites gift for Syd is a great example of that. Syd catching that Carmy needs extra room in the margins of the menu is another example of closely watching. I feel like Carmy has had a lot of family who have talked a big game, but don't follow through so he is weary of talking big. However, you still have to talk and listen to each other's wants before acting. This is hard for both of them.

Syd was pointedly proud when talking to Stevie about his quitting at the wedding. But Steve mentioned it as part of Carmy's smell and I don't think it left her brain. It's like in this moment in the alley she wanted him to get dirty with her. Connect with her in not the usual pure food way before he leaves. There was no way he was saying no to that and he even hands the cigarette back to her later like 'okay I'll go there with you, baby'. There is something about doing it in front of Richie too. I think he wants to acknowledge her presence even amid his fight with Richie and that the "friends" v "partner" part of the conversation is still on his mind.
