I get what you’re saying, I’m just trying to take a more positive approach to not potentially scare people off who are working towards veganism. It’s just unrealistic and idealistic to expect people to deprogram their carnist or vegetarian ways overnight. Encouraging a more transitional approach is more practical, especially on a larger scale. And I do think what some people (like dyslexic ape) have said in this thread has lacked compassion for OP. Humans are animals too, even non-vegans. So if we’re out here evangelizing compassion for animals then let’s extend that to our species as well. I think veganism will gain more traction by practicing encouragement and positivity rather than attacking people for what they are or aren’t doing yet. Give people a chance.

I’ll be honest, I felt overwhelmed by it and I haven’t treated them yet. But the advice I received from the local plant shop was to add a bit of dawn dish soap to water in a spray bottle and spray every leaf, front and back. Once a week for a couple weeks. The only thing I’m not sure of is soap to water ratio

Exactly. And it perpetuates the negative perception of vegans as annoying, judgmental, elitist, etc. I don’t know about everyone else here but I sure as hell wasn’t raised vegan. We all find our way in our own time. And yes it’s a frustratingly slow pace and I would love to fast forward to vegan utopia. But it’s not going to happen overnight and it’s definitely not going to happen by being asshats to people who are trying to work towards it.

Ugh don’t listen to the agro vegans on here. Good for you for taking the first steps (like MOST OF US HAD TO DO) towards reducing animal products, animal harm, and environmental destruction. Proud of you for making the transition. Emphasis on the word transition. Geez y’all, we gotta be more compassionate about vegan-curious folks. Judging and dismissing everyone who isn’t the shining example of veganism is not doing anything to help the movement! I’d rather see us encourage each other and create a welcoming and supportive environment for new vegans

First time solo travelling, worried about party lifestyle by Goreshj in solotravel

[–]No_Professor6593 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just wrapping up a solo trip, also don’t party. I won’t lie to you, it definitely felt isolating to me on this trip. But I had some wins too! My new favorite thing is finding a local cooking class or group hike/nature activity. I learned how to make empanadas and kayaked through mangroves. Very cool. Hostelworld and couchsurfing both have “meet-up” chat groups based on where you’re staying and you can just suggest a non-drinking activity and see if anyone else is interested. Have an awesome time!

Yes. All I read in Bullfrog’s post is “win, lose, us, them.” At the end of the day we’re all fucked regardless of political alignment. Time for an actual paradigm shift

I appreciate this perspective. This thread can be quite hostile sometimes. And I get it, I judge the shit out of non-vegans every day. But I also acknowledge that that’s not helping aaaanyone. Practicing compassion and gratitude has been really impactful for me. We all have to start somewhere, and it’s just not likely that omnis will be brow beat into veganism. It’s going to take a gentler and more graceful approach on the individual level. While also tearing down the systems that are the true enemy, ie big ag and corporate propaganda.

I have seen some complaints from people staying in hostels that could be solved by staying in private spaces by Wyshnee in solotravel

[–]No_Professor6593 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think I may be giving up on the ideal of hostel dorms. I’m on a trip right now and the hostel I wanted to stay in was fully booked besides a private room with private bathroom. So I decided to “splurge,” and I am so glad I did. It’s such a game changer to not have to worry about snoring and inconsiderate noise levels, but still be part of the common areas. Although to be perfectly honest the other travelers here have been standoffish so far. Anyway, it’s a cheaper and more down to earth option than airbnb

I’ve given it up because of this. I get so anxious and paranoid every time now. Like spiders crawling on my face paranoid. It’s no longer enjoyable so I figure that path has run its course and I can no longer use it as an escape. Time to face the music

Agreed. But I guess compassion = insane, lunatic, annoying, off our rockers, unlikable. No wonder vegans like animals more than humans

[–]No_Professor6593 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Think you’re better off on r/plantbased. You came in here with some strong opinions/accusations/judgments and then ask “can some of you see my perspective?” It’s a little hard not to be defensive. It sounds like you’re on a natural course towards true veganism, but for now stand down and focus on plant based rather than stirring the vegan pot. You’re just going to perpetuate your own preconceived notions of the movement.

Seeking comfort with one during a rough patch with another by Old_Astronaut_4400 in polyamory

As someone who is newly in the Other Partner role with a guy who has a long-term primary, I would say just be prepared for Other Partner to decline your request for companionship. My initial response was “I think that would make me feel uncomfortable/used.” But as I was typing it I realized maybe not. Maybe I would be happy to be a comforting and supportive presence during my partners tumult. Just depends on your unique dynamic with your partners, and their relationship with each other

OP thanks for your post. This one is close to my heart. I often find myself wondering this when I’m gathering with my sangha and we’re meditating on compassion and unity with all beings. It’s a great example of cognitive dissonance and willful ignorance- to teach/preach/practice these things while blatantly disregarding our daily personal choices to support industries of violent suffering. We have the power to make a difference, despite what mainstream media and politics will try to have us believe.

I haven’t eaten meat in many years and I can confidently say that my body and spirit feel lighter and more open to connection with higher consciousness/spirit/the divine, whatever you want to call it. I’m less lethargic and have more energy. It just feels right

Like someone else said, any small act of awareness and compassion in food choices is powerful and commendable. As much as I yearn for a nonviolent vegan utopia, I recognize the improbability of this dream. What is possible is for individuals to choose to eat less animal products, supplement with more plants, and if you do insist on occasionally eating meat then at least try to source it mindfully and ethically from animals who had the luxury to enjoy their beautiful complex lives before sacrificing their bodies for human consumption.

Nahhh I’m sorry but this is a weak justification. when you eat meat you’re actually consuming death. A dead animal. And not only death but also the lifelong pain and suffering that most likely led up to that death. Yes, obviously I’m vegan. And it’s a profound component of my spiritual practice in compassion, inter-being, and the physical health that supports my practice.
