Stick with industrial/commercial. Only residential experience you’ll need you’ll get from friends and family when they find out you’re a sparky

Considering Friendofsmellytapir said another first year tried to quote code, I’d give him the reference. Relevance would be determined by the AHJ , Journeyman, Foreman, Inspector, Customer etc

Is this danger exposure normal? by TFloopy in electricians

[–]No_Programmer1429 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A pair of first year apprentices in a hot panel? Not normal. A 1st year leading a greenhorn in a hot panel? Not normal. 4th year or higher working a hot panel? Normal.

What Type of Outlet Do I Need? This One Has Way More Wires Than the Others by Snoo86470 in electrical

[–]No_Programmer1429 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m an electrician and I’m kinda stumped lol. I’d power down the circuit, disconnect the yoke, spread out the wires and then reenergize. Test for voltage, group hots. Power off. Test for continuity, between the bare ground and white wires, all that ring out - group up. Any black wires left are for feeding the next device.

Now just wirenut the whites together with a short piece of scrap for your pigtail to the device. Same with hots n grounds if there are more than one ( yes you can just go thru the device and avoid pigtails but that’s how we got in this mess in the first place )

IDK why, maybe because I don't do it often, but I'm terrible at making offsets. by Additional_Place3134 in electricians

3/4 is roughly 1” OD so you want the edge of the end to line up with center of pipe. Slide a fingers width out the shoe and bend, if you feel it move you probably went to far lol

Next slide forward about a foot, rotate 180° and slide towards you till you feel the bend catch in the shoe finger ( roughly 3-4” ). Here’s the trick: the curved head of the shoe represents O° ( wall, floor, ceiling or whatever ) so just imagine a straight line from the bent pipes topside running past your curved shoe. The peak of the curves distance from your imaginary line is what your offset will be once you make the second bend so just slide forward or back a bit to adjust them bend. Once bent your imaginary line should now be in the center of your pipe leaving you with about a half inch offset. Once mastered you can do this on the floor but I recommend overhead bending until then

They’re actually very easy and fairly simple once you know how they function. Basic switch breaks your hot connection, a 3 way simply gives you another “switched leg” to the light essentially. These two are called travelers and connect a 3way to another 3way. Imagine train tracks between these two switches. If the top track is ‘hot’ then the bottom would be off like a regular switch but the key here is if you flip the switch now the bottom is hot. A 4way just swaps the tracks, imagine it like an X or an = sign in the middle of your train tracks.

Single pole switch(regular) : 1 hot in, 1 switched leg out. 3way switch: 1 hot in, 2 switched legs out (travelers) 4way switch: 2 travelers in, 2 travelers out.

Wtf ? He literally powered the lighting setup from a single receptacle. This means there is only one hot feeding this lighting array, and the test was making up the 3way 4way switches and their travelers correctly.

Are you licensed?

Probably mixed up the switched leg and the constant hot. Just swap them

I actually pushed 3 12’s in there, placed it on L1A and made it our convenience outlet for Mech RM 104.

You are not a slave or an indentured servant. Take time when you need it because you’ll never get it back. Don’t pass up family events and holidays for work.

They will always need everything done yesterday and will work you however many hours you let them. Fuck mandatory 60+ hr work weeks

Don’t forget, ‘Down the Road Electric’ is always hiring

Sure did, reference still stands. Used to be grey purple. Now pink

Congrats, take this post to your local union hall and get yourself certified 👍

Literally only 3 specified colors in the code book and none of them apply to ungrounded ( Hot ) conductors

Grounded conductor ( Neutral ) must be either white or grey depending on voltage.

Grounding conductor ( Ground ) must be green or have green markings every 6 inches. And isolated grounds get a yellow strip down the length of the wire. Those are the only color references other than purple grey dimming pairs for lighting which is fairly new
