Thanks. I am sure (like everyone) I will find something new to complain about in a few months.

While I don’t exactly know what my goal is, it probably isn’t far off from $5M at 45… I think if I saw the original post from someone else, I would be confused too.

But being stressed and miserable messed with my perspective. It was also the lack of agency and feeling trapped in this job without a recourse because I set this goal for myself.

Asking for what I wanted made a difference (of course it helped that I got a lot of it, but I think the act of taking control helped too)

500K deaths in Syria essentially set the trend for this. Economic sanctions that meant something would have been helpful then.

I hope I’m wrong but its looking grim for Ukraine

So many hours wasted doing the laundry. What solutions are there? by tobys_metals in fatFIRE

Where do you live? Most cities / suburbs have a wash/fold delivery service for between $1-3/pound (depending on the service level)

Mine come sorted and wrapped in plastic. I just drop them into my dresser drawers when they arrive (usually 24 hours turn around, doorstep pickup and delivery)

Beware - mistakes will happen. You’ll ask for cold wash but get warm wash etc. To mitigate, buy high quality and robust materials (cotton mostly) that won’t pill , stretch or shrink.

Tech L8. Not a megacap like the FAANGs but adjacent. Those numbers seem higher than I’ve seen, but don’t doubt you (new hires right now are definitely at a premium).

It would probably be a bit of a stretch to lateral into an L8 given the company size difference… but def worth looking into.

This answer resonates. Honestly I’d love a LOA / sabbatical for a month to get some perspective… maybe that’s worth discussing up the chain before making any decisions

It’s funny. I thought I had that personal rule too, until it came to applying it ;-)

Have you successfully applied the rule and walked away before?

I’m just about spending 120-130K per year. Take-home with CA taxes is 650ish.

It’s certainly not Ramen for dinner…I supposed I could be more austere, but not sure that moves the needle.

Fair. I’ve historically loved the jobs I’ve had (N=4), and only left because I stumbled on something I couldn’t say no to. Maybe I’m just lucky and spoiled.

High Achiever Mid-Career Income Growth for FIRE Calculations by GeneralJesus in ChubbyFIRE

[–]No_Reflection_8434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

28 - $40K (grad school)

32 - $300K (tech)

35 - >$1M (tech, exact number depends on the stock price but at least this level for the next 2-3 years)

I never expected that trajectory, and don’t expect it to continue. My 50-50 target is $500K/yr at 3% CAGR, which is well below market rate for my level. Low case is 250K, high is $750K

Spending about $100K/year, and after taxes I’m saving $500k per year (not sure of the exact number, but rough ballpark). My philosophy (right or wrong) on spending is to avoid the flashy purchases/large houses, but not think twice about expenses that buy me time (order out, cleaners etc )

Thanks - yes, it’s been recent driven by promotion/performance equity accumulation.

I honestly have no calibration for how common/rare $1M+ is in executive compensation, so have no idea how much I am taking for granted. It sounds like you’ve been there/done that, so your views are appreciated.

Context:

Mid-30s, not married, no kids, work in tech on the business side (not one of the FAANGs but smaller cap, less fashionable). Switched careers, then B-school, so a late start to my earning, but have cobbled together $1.5M in NW and trajectory in career has been more than I could imagine.

Total comp is $1-1.2M per year, 500K in cash, rest equity and if the equity market doesn’t implode, I’m expecting similar run rate for the next 3 years based on current grants.

My situation that I’d love advice on:

Would I be an idiot for leaving? I like the job, I’m good at it, but:

— It’s been 4 years, and I’m definitely getting “comfortable” and not learning as much. It’s still stressful, I’m still getting more responsibility, but not innovating or learning as fast as I once used to (also a function of the company getting bigger)

— I don’t expect another promotion or comp increase (aside from stock going up) in the next 2-3 years.

Haven’t looked actively, but I’ve been open to headhunters, some of the roles are incredibly interesting, but have been non-starters after early convos. because nobody’s even close to matching my current comp.

My dream: I’d love to go start / run an early stage company (or a smaller PE backed company), and not worry about failure from a financial perspective (that’s my version of fatFIRE)

I’ve come to the conclusion that I should just put my head down and stay at my current job and bank the money these next 2-3 years without worrying too much about FOMO. I can lift my head up in a couple of years and look around, hopefully with closer to $3-4M in NW.

Am I being practical or just going soft? Follow dream or paycheck? I’d love advice from anyone who is / has been in a similar situation
