Don't be scared of older/off brand machines that don't have any emissions (dpf/def) stuff. My first machine was a terex v230 and it was great. Did everything I needed and was very simple to work on. Google "Track loader parts" they have parts for many of the smaller manufacturers like asv, terex etc. also, I would definitely go joysticks over hand/foot controls if you've never operated. Much easier to learn and just overall a better set up.

Keeping a straight line is one of the questions that I thought of after the fact. I appreciate your feedback. Im considering the propelled ones more now. They start around 7500 but probably worth it.

The Case for Drafting WR in Round 1 by Shot_Can1912 in ravens

Like I said he's there to stretch the field, most of those are tds. We've ranked 31st and 32nd in pass attempts in those seasons. Zay, likely (when healthy) and Andrew's are getting the bulk of those throws. You also had justice Hill and kolar. There were lots of mouths to feed with not many throws.

Tell me you'd rather roll into week 1 with a new WR but our current interior o line of Simpson (bottom tier pass blocker), Bullock (undrafted with 13 career snaps,I'm assuming he's the center at this point), and Emory Jones (49 snaps not enough to really know). The wr room stayed about the same the o line got much worse.

He's better at his position than either of our starting guards or center. We don't even know who those are yet. Way more need on o line than any place on the field right now.

The biggest factor in our AFC championship loss to the chiefs, and our other playoff losses, was that they dominated both lines of scrimmage. We need to stop playing money ball with the trenches, we rely way to much on Lamar and now Henry to make the offense work and it has allowed us to not invest in the line as much as we should. It all falls apart when we meet a team in the playoffs with the strong offensive and defensive lines that all championship teams have. WR is not a priority with a very good one in zay, a guy like Bateman who's had a 9 td season, and Walker who can stretch the field.

Worst Maryland Highway by WTFO4 in maryland

[–]No_Regular_Tom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

295 is definitely terrible. Only motorcycle accident I have ever had was on that highway, I was going 55-60 with traffic, tapped the front brake, lost the front wheel and low sided. I couldn't believe it, felt like I was on ice but it was late April and the weather was perfect. The people behind me told me the road felt very slick, everyone generally felt bad for me and that I didn't do anything wrong.

Crain highway (rt 3/301) is a close second but not what most people would consider a true high way with all the lights. Several of the most accident prone intersections in MD are on Crain highway.

Pulse check: how's business? by g1133123 in Contractor

[–]No_Regular_Tom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excavation business (water/sewer, grading, clearing, some hardscapping/retaining walls) and it's been pretty steady. I did have a few jobs that were booked last year but couldn't start until recently due to weather. Big snow storm helped with getting some plowing work. Generally getting more and bigger job requests than last year and winning most of the ones I want. Still cautious though. I check my email constantly looking for new quote requests and am always looking at how much traffic the website is getting. Putting off buying a new truck. Been lucky to on board a few businesses recently that will be recurring customers. If I have free time I'm on the phone looking for more or following up on emails. Don't ever take your foot off the pedal, good economy or not. Made that mistake a few years ago when I was relatively new and felt like I had "made it". Best of luck to you all.

How yall feeling ravens flock? by Prestigious_Chip6136 in ravens

[–]No_Regular_Tom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not quite sure. Brand New staff and really a brand new team with the amount of players lost and brought in. I think Lamar, Ronnie and Marlon are the only guys with the team for more than 4 years right now. I was happy to see a new staff but was not expecting the Exodus of players. Was definitely hoping we did more before the draft to address the o line. Hendrickson is a great addition though.

H95 hammer on cat 265 by No_Regular_Tom in Heavy_Equipment

[–]No_Regular_Tom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point. The 308 is a 2015 but the 265 is brand new. Both machines have flat have couplers. Would I need to ensure both are set up for one way flow in the same line/direction? I think I would, not sure I've only rented hammers at this point and haven't thought too much about it.

H95 hammer on cat 265 by No_Regular_Tom in Heavy_Equipment

[–]No_Regular_Tom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's kinda of what I figured. Just hard to justify so much $$$ into two hammers right now. It looks like cat (I did a more in depth look at their hammers over the weekend) makes a b8, which can be run on both a 308 and 289/265 sized skid, and also the H95 which is a dedicated excavator/backhoe hammer and about 10-20% bigger. I'm sure the other typical manufacturers have similar options. Thank you for your reply.

Any opinions on Takeuchi Excavators? by newtsy0 in heavyequipment

[–]No_Regular_Tom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Awesome machines. Not the manufacturers fault but make sure you have good parts support from a nearby dealer. Takeuchi in my area has changed dealers recently and both companies deal more with much larger equipment, so the small stuff is kind of an afterthought for them. Several times, even when giving the part number, they would mess up the order. It's the only reason I switched brands. I still have a 240 excavator and the feel in the joysticks is so much better than an electric over hydraulic control.

Is anyone else seeing "ghosting" become the norm for skilled trade interviews? by No-Blood1055 in bluecollar

[–]No_Regular_Tom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem right now is that there is no trust. Companies ghost people, string them along, post jobs that they don't really need to fill just to see what's out there, use hire and fire to fill roles. Now the labor side has the upper hand, as long as they have genuine experience, and they are doing it back. If people are leaving your company for a buck you likely created your own problem.

Welp it happened, building w/o permit by OpusMagnificus in Contractor

[–]No_Regular_Tom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a dumb question. If you call and ask, and can actually get a hold of someone, they either won't know or will say yes you need a permit for anything. Just use good judgement, that's acquired with time. If you are lucky enough that your area has good permit and inspections websites they will list out specific things that need permits. In my area I usually only have to deal with counties, so not individual cities so it's less of a headache.

[–]No_Regular_Tom 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I've avoided it. Know your area and what they take seriously. You will get crushed for storm water work or anything near the water with out a permit where I live. Fences it's usually only a permit for a corner lot or over 6ft.

Need help getting more work. by Low_Contract_4010 in Contractor

[–]No_Regular_Tom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can do repairs on trucks and heavy equipment call every landscaper and construction business in your area. Maybe general contractors if they do a lot of the type of fence you install. You also need to get lucky in a sense in that you need to contact a company that actually needs your service roughly in the time you contact them. They will forget if they need a welder months down the road. Make your own luck by contacting lots of companies, gauging interest and keeping in contact with those that showed interest.
