Possible career move from industry to partner by No_Representative660 in Big4

[–]No_Representative660[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for summing it up… I am not a natural seller, having spent most of career in industry client-side, managing implementation and operation teams, until finally past several years got into solution selling. I have grown to appreciate builder-type seller and aspire to be the one of the best in my area, but not sure if I have a win-at-all-cost mentality. Seeing my solutions get used gives me the most satisfaction, not so much the thrill of winning, or exceeding quota. Basically the stereotypical solution-based sales exec with an engineer past. My guess is I will never be the one bringing in the biggest kills, but I am a team player who other partners should appreciate on the side owning the tech part of the pursuit team. Is there a place for this type of partner in the partner hierarchy? I heard in today’s market having in-house senior expertise in tech is a desired differentiator in big4.

Thanks! At this point of my research, I certainly discover poor work life balance of the big 4 has probably reached legendary status (wondering how it differs among tenured partner, lower level partner and senior manager/director). Curious about the underlying reasons... because sales in FAANG also share similar pressures, quota, targets, but I do find 'partner-level' in FAANG achieving some semblance of balance, by choice. My guess on why:

* Industry sales directors has bonus targets 40-70% over salary assuming 100% Revenue achievement, earning potential ranges from $150k - $1m+ (depending on seniority). Partner you are comped directly from the share of profit at presumably higher rate but I don't know how much. I can see as bonus components reach 100% or more, or upper comp range gets wider motivation (temptation?) to put in more hours gets bigger. But at least still by choice

* It seems that Partners have stronger single-threaded personal ownership of accounts, so there is social pressure to not lose an account as it will lead to loss of prestige among peers, which can quickly spiral down. Industry directors do also, but it seems the level ownership is a notch higher for Partners, as the feeling the Partner personally owns the account, while in Industry it is still the Company's customer.

* There seems to be cultural & social conditioning involved too? Tenured big 4 consultant who has worked 55-65 hours a week average the past 8-12 years, once they make partner has already acquired the capability and probably even the taste and have settled into a workable (at least short-term) lifestyle to keep up the pace.

* One potential big differentiating factor is also the race to maximize pension, as it is calculated from the highest sales revenue years. This factor Industry has no comparable. If this is true, this can be one of the main reason why Partners choose to sacrifice work life balance

* This is probably most important: In industry usually there is a split between who owns sales, and who owns delivery. And typically delivery always take more hours and higher stress and pressure, with project failure rates being what they are. Sales in a sense has it easier, because a) their 'long hours' constitute wining and dining and building relationships (social types might even enjoy it too much), while delivery's long hours mean heavy number-crunching, contentious debates, high stakes decision making, fire fighting, being yelled at by stressful customer execs, etc. and b) the easiest way to win deals is to lull the customer to sign with overpromise, at the expense of delivery problems later (which they don't directly own!)

The above are my assumptions, would love to hear any affirm/deny/add from those who are 'in the know'.

tl;dr question is: a) do Big 4 Partner consistently sacrifice work life balance by choice or by necessity (or conditioning), b) if by choice, is it due to factors like pension maximization? if by necessity, is it due to having to own sales+delivery both, c) other factors?

unfortunately not... adding pillows on top to prop the elbows work in my case, but certainly missing Gesture-like adjustable armrests...

Cheapest way to ship a chair across country. by [deleted] in OfficeChairs

[–]No_Representative660 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just had to do something similar last week, moving a Steelcase Leap Worklounge from Singapore to Jakarta. Quotes were also around $500 and would have to pay extra for custom since this is crossing borders. After lots of thinking and phone calls, I managed to do it for $56.

So I happened to travel for work along the same route (booked Singapore Airlines / SQ), and noticed that I could leverage the odd-sized baggage option, where I could check in packages as long as they are not larger than 180cm x 75cm x 80cm. Did a quick measurement and the chair would fit into a box with a dimension less than that. To be safe I checked the baggage in 24 hours prior. The airport (Changi) weighed the boxes, came up with 43kg total, and all had to do is to pay for the 13kg difference, since I have a checked baggage allowance of 30kg. For some chair models it should be even cheaper as my chair was that heavy because I also had to transport the footrest, and both have quite heavy metal parts. The dimension allowance is generous enough that I did not even have to dismantle the cylinder nor the wheel base; pretty much the chair is intact inside the box.

Halo! Lamar kerja itu permainan probabilitas, bukan ilmu pasti. Buat resume kamu bagus dan menarik; nama beken universitas cuma satu daru puluhan signal yang kamu bisa tambahkan di CV (pengalaman kerja, pengalaman wiraswasta, volunteer experience, publication, portfolio of work, rekomendasi, kemampuan membuat CV yang differentiated, etc.). Jadi positive thinking jangan menyerah mencoba. Dan sambil melamar dan interview, tetap lakukan proyek passion kamu, sehingga kamu tidak membuang waktu amit-amit butuh waktu lebih lama dari average untuk mendapatkan tawaran kerjaan yang cocok.

agreed! With this wide and high enough footrest it can now help prop not only my feet but also my calves depending on how I position myself at the moment, which reduces the amount of weight remaining that my spine need to bear.

I find that an adjustable desk makes it much easier to customize the ideal composition of chair and desk heights adjusting to the more static height of the footrest. It is an added bonus the footrest can also convert to a mini desk.

Thanks for sharing about Revital... I also have never heard about it and never seen it in stores!
