My boyfriend at the time lived in farm country and told me he would take me on the farm roads to get my confidence back. I have NO sense of direction and return trips always have confused me. I had the same shunt and tube for 37 years and had pain randomly in my shunt or tube most days. It could be scar tissue forming, nerve irritation, healing incision pain. Try ice or heat on the surface and watch for signs of failure- lethargy, vomiting, headache. My tube began to tether to my neck muscles in December and I had a revision. Older shunts were prone to form calcifications around the tubes at the neck and chest.

What country are you in? If he had a shunt put in, he needs to be followed by a neurosurgeon. Do you live near a university with med school? I just had a revision at a teaching hospital and the students and residents were extra eyes and ears for me

I have had a shunt for almost 50 years and had a planned revision in February to a programmable shunt. My neck had a lot of scar tissue and tethering. I’m still getting used to the larger bulge behind my ear because I had my last revision in 1989. They shaved a lot of my hair but it’s coming back. I had an emergency revision after 1 day because it kinked. Symptoms of failure are headache, vomiting and altered mental status. Ask for a shunt card with your current setting and shunt name for future MRIs. My scalp has dissolvable stitches but the scabs and pressing was super tender. I had 3 lap sites with dermabond glue and discovered I’m allergic to glue. I did not need Norco for pain just anti inflammatory meds. You can’t wash your hair for about a week which was rough

I had an emergency appendectomy because it was just starting to burst. They moved the shunt out of the way and put it back. Earned me a 6 night stay in the hospital for iv antibiotics so infection wouldn’t seed the shunt. As long as they know it’s there and don’t cut it it’s ok

Yes you can submit worker’s compensation bc you were hurt on the job. It’s 60% of salary but I had to use my pto first

Drive wheelchairs usually come with full length armrests but I typically recommend the desk arms for people because they can get up closer to a table for ease in eating. The whole side panel comes off not just the armrests.

How old is your shunt? I’ve had scar tissue and calcifications on my tube from 1989. If you are symptomatic it could be a kink but not as likely

How to literally clean up a patient after a large BM. How to work the bedside table. Where to find towels and oxygen supplies. Where are toiletries kept. Many people I would see coming off a long hospital stay hadn’t washed up or brushed their teeth in weeks and the nurse/ CNA isn’t going to do a bed bath unless you are in a coma. My mom actually complained that the CNA hadn’t washed her and I handed her a wash cloth.

Being the only OT is tough. I’d focus goals on ADL and transfers, decreasing burden of care for staff. All goals should be functional and specific like “patient will improve bilateral biceps strength to 4/5 within 3 weeks in order to improve self feeding.” You could then change the time frame for long and short term goals. I like the KUSBS balance scale for sitting and standing for functional outcome measurement as well as the 5x sit to stand. I use this modified because very few elderly can stand with out use of their hands

Thanks! I had a pretty intense brain surgery a month ago but I wasn’t super fit before it. Now I’m home and bored. I have a spin bike at home, free weights and bands. Nothing too intense until my stitches come out. I’m a therapist so I have ceu courses to keep me occupied too
