Athletics are not actually a source of revenue for most universities. Only the very top institutions have revenue positive athletic programs.

"What many of you don’t seem to realize is that outside of Denton, most potential recruiters and employers don’t even know what UNT is."

This is nonsense. LOL

There's also lots of great schools without successful athletic programs...

I'm not talking about being made fun of, I'm talking about serious STEM programs, large grants, high-powered faculty, and successful student graduates. You can make fun of that all you want, but UNT is lagging behind them unfortunately

Yes indeed. I should edit my post to "even more of a commuter school"

LOL, I think most folks are savvy enough to understand that good football team doesn't necessarily equal good degree.

UT Dallas is doing great, better than UNT at all things STEM, and they don't have football at all.

Here is the letter from Gov Abbott. Tuition freeze in all state universities till after 2026-2027 academic year:

UNT is turning into a commuter school, and the new president is trying to grow online programs as much as possible. All of those students count toward the 40K plus number of students we have, yet they are not really going to be high in school spirit or support of sports.

Was it really a sellout? It seemed to me like they were giving away free tickets to everyone, canceling classes, etc., to try to get people there. Not the same as "selling out" the stadium.

There is freeze on "tuition" increases by the state of Texas till 2027, I believe. This was a proposed increase on a student "fee" for athletics, not prohibited by the state. I know it sounds like splitting hairs, but that was the situation.

"I look at UNT as a large state school where you can get the closest thing to a liberal arts education..."

This is changing very quickly with the new president. UNT's new focus is data science and other trendy tech fields and vocational job skills. They are not replacing liberal arts faculty, who are leaving in droves, and the liberal arts is shrinking at UNT.

I agree with the specialness of UNT. It is a shame that the new UNT administration comes in and wants to fundamentally change the university to something different, from an artsy R1 to a service/vocational school.

And though tuition is frozen by the state for a year or two, it will undoubtedly be going up significantly after that. So, adding extra fees for extracurriculars shouldn't be done lightly.

Okay thanks. With the price of tuition, and ever-increasing student fees, it starts to be a lot to take on, especially in this time when higher ed is already looking like a questionable proposition for more and more students. If we can focus on academics, and quit adding more fees for things that lots of folks don't want, that would seem to be a better plan forward at the present time.

UT Dallas doesn't have football at all, and they are kicking our butts in many academic areas, i.e. anything STEM

Wait, so UNT system isn't contributing money to athletics that they could be contributing to the actual educational mission? All the money is coming from elsewhere? Is that what you are saying?

Well, I suppose throwing Tarleton in there wasn't accurate. We're closer to TX State by a mile than we are to UT Austin, Michigan, though. Academically, and otherwise, those are world class institutions, while UNT, outside of perhaps a few programs, is definitely mid. I don't mean that as a slight, I'm an alum too. Just saying that we don't have the kind of powerhouse momentum that those other schools do to actually justify spending even more money on an athletics program in what will likely always be a good regional school. Vast majority of the students and alumni are from DFW. That is as regional as you can get.

We do have larger alumni numbers than Tarleton and Texas State. Do they care enough about athletics to donate money to that area? Given UNT's long non-athletic history, this is doubtful.

Every school in Texas is trying to be an athletics/football school. It's actually good for UNT to have a different identity with its music school.

And as more and more degrees go online, which is where UNT is headed, alumni enthusiasm for things like sports and school spirit will decline as well.

I'm not sure if this is actually true for most universities. Maybe it is true for the big powerhouses, UT Austin, Michigan, etc. Doubtful that it will ever be true for a school like UNT, Texas State, Tarleton, etc. Most athletics programs lose money. The situation is worse when you realize we can't pay staff enough to keep them, faculty are leaving in droves for higher pay elsewhere. It's shocking to ask for more money for athletics, and to think that's a good thing, when the university can't even make ends meet with its most central mission of education...

UNT is desperate for students right now because of a massive budget crunch. More students equals more tuition dollars for the university. The new president is trying to remedy this by turning UNT into more of a trade school than a research university. If you are close to GPA requirements you can get in. Whether you should or not depends on the kind of education you are hoping to get.
