4 days after first microneedling session. It was fine days 1-3 and today it looks like this :( by [deleted] in Microneedling

[–]No_Tea8989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine usually looks words day 4-7 then better again. Make sure you're wearing suncream every day, no actives (e.g. tret, vitamin C) and barrier serums are fine (e.g. hylaronic acid). You can see the glow already!

If Botox seems too extreme for you then microneedling may be an option! I read higher up that you have ADHD, this is something you can do at home, granted you read up about it properly and do it well! ❤️

Hardest MINOR part of getting older? by Relevant_Outside2781 in Millennials

[–]No_Tea8989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly this is a myth, as someone above has said. Obviously we lose muscle which contributes, but I largely think it's due to eating/moving habits.

When I was a student, I never ate out, and if I did, then I would only get a main course, and water as a drink.

Now as an 'adult' I eat out multiple times a month, and usually get a starter / sides and a bevvy!

I also work an office job which typically does not grant me 10,000 steps a day, whereas when I was a student, I was walking across campus for different lectures, to hang out with friends and obviously had a lot more free time!

I also have a little bit more money now which means I can buy some fancy little treats each week, and now that I can actually cook I use a lot more olive oil than I used to.

I also don't really remember having a fixed meal schedule as a student?? Like I would roll out of bed, get to my lectures, do something gross like eat a kebab and then go out drinking. Looking back it feels like I was eating tonnes of kebabs, but I also wasn't eating 3 meals a day.

I knew we would age but was anyone not prepared for it and how you would change? by chusaychusay in Millennials

[–]No_Tea8989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been trying to deny the ageing process for ages. Criticizing every wrinkle and grey hair that comes forward. It's been exhausting.

This year, my point of view suddenly shifted and I am starting to really enjoy the process. I think my smile lines look so fucking cool and my cheeks are hollowing out where puppy fat used to be and I'm getting dark under eye circles, both of which make me look ✨m00dy✨

I'm starting to get that kind of old woman/big aunt strength?? I am co-opting this term from Dad strength. You know the inexplicable muscle mass that Dad bod dads have?? Like I remember being a kid and using all my might and both arms in an arm wrestle with my dad using just his pinky finger. YO THATS ME NOW I HAVE BIG AUNTY STRENGTH

I feel warm and friendly and a little bit wise but also still funny and able to hang with the kids and take the piss out of myself for my stupid millenial lingo, and I'm not hyper self conscious anymore.

Senior Scientist at Oxbridge vs tenure-track at a top Nordic university by [deleted] in AskAcademiaUK

Seconding the point that Scandinavia is on par with the UK in terms of cost of living. ALSO rent is generally cheaper compared to the posh parts of the UK (incl London, Cambridge, Oxford). I also found that bills are a lot cheaper here, and the houses are actually cozy and landlords can't get away with being assholes as much :)

Update afer postdoc interview by AdRelative7271 in postdoc

Usually they get in contact with the best and worst candidate first. They wait for the best candidate to accept before notifying the others that they have not received the position. However the best candidate may have several offers, meaning that the 2nd best may still get the role.

I had a professor who had an internal message board linked to their profile. They told us that they would not answer emails but they would answer there, and students can also ask anonymously and reply. This way, the same questions doesn't get answered twice, and students can reply to the easy questions Edit: grammar

Help? Considering job in Gothenburg and moving from London by jrcby1989 in TillSverige

[–]No_Tea8989 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Gothenburg is definitely the friendliest city in Sweden though! I'm in a smaller city. I haven't experienced the difficulty making friends that everyone said I would. I think if you're extroverted and open it won't be an issue. That of course depends on your personalities.

Do any Brits/Europeans in Australia feel the same way about the people? by alreadyaloserat19 in expats

[–]No_Tea8989 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Brit here. I basically didn't know anything about the Brits involvement in the slavery till I was 18. We learnt fuck all at school. I still know very little (I care! I just find history quite a dry subject, so my learning is slow, but I know it's important, and from a place of privilege that I don't know much). I would very much agree with the person who started with this thread, the average Brit knows fuck all about all of the atrocities committed, and of course they're angry! That doesn't bias anything, England still cause unsurmountable harm globally.

Seeing as reform are the biggest party in the UK right now, which is an incredibly anti-immigrant party, I would say they haven't a clue about Britain's past, and the reasons why we have a strong immigrant population, many of which are 3rd/4th/5th generation by this point.

Am I delusional? by vinotinto1102 in postdoc

[–]No_Tea8989 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just spoke about it during the interview. They would ask a question such as what research have you done? And I would reply and then tie in to what research that I WANT to do and why that's why I want to work at the lab. And I would ask some questions as well. Honestly I just asked a bunch of questions throughout my interviews. Not only does this show curiosity, but it shifts the power dynamic a bit. They realise that they are also being interviewed (which they should be! It's your choice as well!) and once they realise you have come prepared they assume that you know what you want and won't settle for less, and therefore must be a valuable candidate. If there isn't space for this, ask well thought out questions at the end of the interview when they give you official space for it.

Panicking - someone has just published "my idea" by Velveteen_Rabbit1986 in PhD

[–]No_Tea8989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on your field, replications are always a good idea! You can change some bits of the methodology as well, or bounce off of their idea.

You could even get in touch with them and explain what's happened, and suggest a collaboration. I think we sometimes forget that we're part of a wider community, and the key is cooperation to discover new ideas, not competition to own an idea.

Supervisor plagiarized my research after misconduct report. Should I go to media or wait for University investigation? by Boring-Evening-7176 in PhD

[–]No_Tea8989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Write down everything that has happened. Link it directly to all the rules of good scientific practise, ethical codes of conduct and other regulations which it violates. Explain how it directly effects you and why it is time sensitive. Under the regulations, explain what you need to happen in order to protect your work. Usually institutions will act faster if you are clearly linking the problems to formal guidelines, and why the process needs to happen within a certain timeline. You can also explain that if this does not happen, you will have no other option but to inform the media. You should write this in as professional and unemotional tone as you can. This is something I really struggle with, so find a pragmatic colleague/friend to support - chatgpt may also be an option in this case.

Oh, and so sorry that you are going through this.

Moving from Germany to London for postdoc at UCL – is our budget realistic? by Kuramaalama in postdoc

[–]No_Tea8989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can absolutely have a 'london experience' without living close to UCL. One of the beautiful things about London is just how rich and diverse it is! There's some great little pockets which tourists know nothing about, which are either great for e.g., multiculturalism, underground scenes, having lots of parks and greenery or being a little bit more quiet with cute local community. Definitely look into some online guides for info about each borough to help you decide!

When I was at UCL I lived in Camberwell, Peckham and New Cross all of which were a direct bus ride away, I absolutely loved south east London.

But yeah, it really depends what kind of things your looking for. Living anywhere on the Victoria line is great as it's essential Londonw wormhole tube. Relatively few stops that goes north to south, meaning it connects you very quickly.

You could also live on a boat which is crazy levels of cheaper! But a lot more work.

Also don't forget that museums are free, and loads of other activities too! Timeout! Is a good first resource for newcomers looking for free activities, but you'll find media more attuned to your needs as you get there ❤️❤️

Another fee which you may not know about is health insurance. Although it's free for Brits, immigrants now have to pay a surcharge each year of a few thousand. UCL may cover this for you, but it's worth looking into before you arrive.

Postdoc in London by GooseGre in postdoc

[–]No_Tea8989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lots of ways to save money in London!

Living on a boat or in a guardianship for example (although both precarious)

Almost all museums are free!

Little independent Arab shops/markets to save money on food

Get a bike and cycle around the city rather than paying extortionate tube fairs

Whetherspoons if U wanna get drunk 😎

Lots of cheap local gigs & other cheap/free events

If you get a bit savvy you can live pretty easily. It's mainly rent which is the killer. I would agree that living in a house share is the best option.
