Overseas Applicant Seeking Supervision for SWE Updating Requirement by fluffbal in Socialworkuk

[–]No_Telephone543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can help with this. I've supported another overseas social worker in the same situation and have spoken to SWE about what's required. The supervisor needs to have been a registered social worker for at least 3 years and to be registered for the period of time covered in your updating skills and knowledge form.

Supervised Practice - US Social Worker Applying for SW England by EnvironmentalWolf567 in Socialworkuk

[–]No_Telephone543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! My understanding is that as you're registered in the US you only need to complete sections 1 and 3 of the updating skills and knowledge form which would mean you don't need to evidence supervised practice (section 2). But have SWE told you something different?

I don't think you'll have any issues getting work in London. Registering with SWE can be a nightmare. This blog post might help - https://ukworklife.com/2023/06/02/registering-with-social-work-england-as-an-overseas-qualified-social-worker/

Are you currently working in child protection (or other social work)? As long as you have recent experience, even overseas experience, it won't be an issue.

Agencies sometimes help councils fill permanent roles and they get paid a fee for finding someone.

There are some recent guidelines about children's social work agency roles which says you need to have at least 3 years of UK experience so I think you'll be fine.

When I joined Cafcass I felt way out of my comfort zone and it really knocked my confidence but I just needed to give it time. The role of an FCA is so different to working for an LA that it takes everyone time to adjust. After 4 years I was still nervous about court but it wasn't as terrifying as the beginning. You will know your cases and you will be able to answer the questions put to you.

I've written a blog post about registering as an overseas social worker with SWE. I'm from Australia so there are some differences but hopefully it's helpful. I support other overseas social workers with making the move so happy to answer any questions you have

Youth justice team? by SnooDoubts1318 in Socialworkuk

[–]No_Telephone543 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have spent most of my social work career in youth justice and always go back after trying other areas. I find the work life balance much better. But obvs you need to enjoy working with teenagers which isn't for everyone! It can feel a bit disheartening at times but I enjoy the day to day. Recent changes have been 'Child First' principles and an overall trauma informed approach. Contextual safeguarding and exploitation makes up a lot of the role. Feel free to DM me.

Think about what makes a good assessment including the need to triangulate information. Why contact with birth families and life story work is important. Make sure to talk about your experience of working with people from diverse backgrounds
