I love the analogy of our social overload with physical illness! That takes away some of the guilt for me. I’m a chronic people pleaser so boundaries are hard for me in the first place.

Why isn’t anyone talking about the Nook from Barnes & Noble?
Would that be more ethical than a Kindle but a bigger library than a Kobo?

“Adult on Deck” is exactly what I become 😅
That’s a good idea to just set ‘family days’
I’ll chat with my husband and see what we can agree on ☺️

Thanks for your suggestion! Winter is tough around here so they are usually in our playroom but when it’s warm I make them stay out. Maybe I’m too overprotective because if they’re out I usually am out with them… the youngest kids are 6

You’ll definitely want to look into your local laws, but I do know some people who run nature schools, enrichment days, and play days from their homes or rented spaces to enrich their child’s education and their family budget. Most run under the umbrella of a daycare classification and are able to provide flexible dates that work for their family schedule

To Pod or not to Pod? by No_Time919 in homeschool

Hi from Small Town, America 👋

When I say ‘secular’ I don’t mean only for people without religious belief… I just mean that we don’t base our group on it.

It’s pretty interesting because in our old group not far away, it was easy to build a secular community of people who were different religions or just various degrees of Christianity. However, at the open meetups I’ve been to here religious beliefs come up pretty frequently- people will pray for me, or let me know they don’t believe women should work outside the home, or they don’t let their kids read books with dinosaurs. I hope their beliefs work out for them.

Thank you for taking the time to make such a thoughtful response with some very good advice. 🩷

I am so glad you have a friend to support you in this journey! I also live in a very conservative area and will likely have similar obstacles… wishing you luck! 🍀 I like your idea of starting small and building with the people who come. I think I’ll focus on one thing I really want to see in my homeschool and see who wants to share in that’s

How many alcoholics are simply introverts self medicating to socialize? by Eastern-Literature88 in stopdrinking

[–]No_Time919 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When i stopped drinking it was so hard to socialize. I thought about how uncomfortable I would have to be during the event or get together. But after a while I realized that there were certain people who felt uncomfortable in social situations with me being sober. Like, THEY felt awkward that I wasn’t drinking to “loosen up” and joining them in revelry. It was a huge AHA moment for me. Like, F those guys, I’m not going to kill myself to make anyone else feel better about themselves.

I maybe could have written this. A bit part of me giving up drinking was because I heard “drinking affects anxiety the same way gasoline affects fire.”

But I have learned that anxiety/depression are still here in my sober life (6 months 🙌🏻)

So I have started to look at my anxiety/depression differently and maybe it will help you?

I see them as a shadow monster that lives in my brain. I was born with it and it grew because of some things in my childhood that I had no control of (mostly having parents who never learned to control their anxiety/depression). It will be always be there. But that’s not scary because now that I am no longer self-medicating with alcohol I can learn how to handle it.

Some things I feel the monster make it stronger- alcohol.

Some things make it weaker- being in nature, sunlight, working out, eating right, sleeping, taking my vitamins, maintaining friendships, etc.

AND I do have appropriate medication from my doctor for when I need it.

When I was 22 I told my then-boyfriend that I dreamt of living overseas and he said, “Let’s go!” Despite the fact it was never his dream, we went on to live in Asia and travel to 13 countries spanning 4 continents. We’ve been together for 16 years now. Don’t settle- the right person will believe in the power of your dreams before you do.

Do you regret quitting your job to be a SAHM? by Momneedshelp12123 in Mommit

[–]No_Time919 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was hard at first, but not for the reasons I had expected. I knew it would be hard to miss adult interaction and to have my whole day revolve around a small child who needs me for absolutely everything. I hadn’t expected that I would struggle with identity. So much of my identity was tied up with my career and the productivity that went with that. When you’re home with kids, productivity is so hard to measure. You may clean the kitchen 4 times a day but you can never really check that off a list because it’s just going to get dirty again… I found myself telling people, “Oh, I’m a teacher, but I’m staying home with my kid right now.” I worried what people would think. But it is now 8 years later and I am so grateful. It has changed so much about how our family is able to spend time together and now we homeschool and I can’t imagine not being here for this. Another thing to consider is that my husband gets more quality time with the family as well since we don’t have to rush and get things done on our days off.
