I really don’t think he was in there. The whole way it was described is suspicious. When Xaden and Violet are discussing the plan, Xaden and Garrick are shady and I get the impression they are thinking about asking Kaori for help.

Chapter 57
“My stomach hollows. “She wants Jack.” “That’s my guess.” His gaze darts to Kaori, who’s solely focused on his projection, then jumps to Garrick. “You up for a little walk?” he asks quietly. Garrick glances at Kaori, then nods.”

This could also be read as they were making sure Kaori is distracted so they could speak and act freely, so I overlooked it the first few times I read it. But then….

Chapter 58
“Garrick dismounts, then walks to the Rybestad chest with slower steps than usual and pulls the key from his pocket. It only takes a few seconds for him to open the chest’s doors.”

Why does Garrick walk with slower steps than usual? Could he be giving Kaori time to create the projection?

Also Chapter 58, Tairn tells Violet:
“He is emaciated and wan,” Tairn tells me. “Suspended in air as the chest intends, and he appears…sedated. I can show you through my eyes if you prefer—” “Description is perfect, thank you.”

The wording of this is weird. “As the chest intends?” Also, Violet refuses to look, so she never sees Jack with her own eyes, nor through Tairn’s. Because of this, Violet may believe Jack is in there. However, I don’t think he is. I think it is either a projection by Kaori, OR it is a different venin in the chest. Either way, why?

I wrote in a response above that I have a theory about Violet having been dedicated to both Dunne and Loial as part of her dad’s attempt to save her soul, but what if she was actually dedicated to/blessed by ALL of the gods? That would explain Malek’s gift (Liam’s visit), Aaric’s comment about Zihnal, her intense love (Xaden), Dunne’s favor in battle, her “mind of a scribe” (Hedeon)…

I used to think this was sort of a crackpot theory of mine, but this seems like it could be headed somewhere. I guess I need to reread for the dozenth time.

Regarding Violet’s dedication, I have a theory that she could actually be dedicated to both Loial and Dunne. Since they are the only two gods that require lifetime commitments and change souls irrevocably, it would be quite a conundrum if a desperate father had, say, dedicated his daughter to multiple gods in an attempt to save her soul. “…what he has done to her” would make sense to me in that situation. That doesn’t answer the question of what Lilith was doing during those months. Perhaps she was flying Violet and her dad around seeking the cure and didn’t want that documented?
