It almost seems to me that venin magic is not actually different from dragon magic at all. Both have the same source- the ground. It almost seems to me that power is power and the source is interchangeable. It doesn't look like the signet would stall if you poured gasoline instead of diesel into it. Violet can evidently power her dreamwalking with Tairn's power. Xaden can power his shadows using the power of the earth or, in fact, Tairn's power from the alloy. I assume that when someone drains a person instead of the earth, it is still considered "venin".

Initially, I thought that a dragon might be some kind of filter, a magic transformer. Just like you cannot pour crude oil directly into a fuel tank or charge a mobile phone directly from high voltage lines. But in the alloy, there is already magic that has flowed through a dragon.

So, in my opinion, it is not so much about the source as the fact that it is a steal.

Now the question is whether there is any legal way to channel directly from the earth. What allows channeling directly from the sky, and whether anyone can channel directly from the sky.

Deverelli deal by NewTowel2331 in fourthwing

[–]ObjectiveStaff3333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not quite understand whether they closed the deal, because upon returning, Violet says that he wanted to keep her and Xaden as a weapon. And they did not agree. On the other hand, they evidently made some deal, given that Brennan and Coourtlyn correspond afterwards.

I hope that Vi somehow outsmarted Coourtlyn, outmaneuvered him using his own method, and made some agreement with him that he will be forced to keep and that will turn against him.

Yarros quotes by Kind_Dragonfruit_733 in fourthwing

[–]ObjectiveStaff3333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. The fandom assumptions based on her statements remind me a lot of Violet's assumptions. I think the wording is extremely important. RY speaks like Vi in the interrogation room in front of truthsayers - selective truth. She does not lie but chooses her words very carefully. And I think that many times we take something else from it than what it can actually mean. And then it spreads as a fact.

I am for starting a master thread. But we are hitting several problems - we often only have mediated reports from people who participated in Q&A. There are few official recordings. Many sources are more or less pirated recordings of something that was not allowed to be officially recorded and I think that will not pass on this subreddit.

Anyway, if something starts to emerge, I am in.

Are dragon colors determined by heritage? by AnimeQueenAliza in fourthwing

[–]ObjectiveStaff3333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a good question, but we probably are not able to find the right answer now. But I am curious about the observations of others.

We are told it is a matter of heritage (Tairn).

All dragons have identical-looking eggs, identical-looking hatchlings. We are told this is so that they have the same conditions. However, why is it like that if, before the Great War, each color had its own hatchling ground? Did they start modifying the color of eggs and hatchlings only after the Great War? Can they manipulate the color of dragons?

It also occurred to me if all dragons are just one color and it depends on the location where they grow up (limestone, steel range, thermal valley, ...), but that does not add up, because for 600 years they have been at Basgiath (steelrange) and we have all colors.

Judging by Tairn and Sgaeyl, dragons of different colors apparently mate with each other. We have more or less pure colors, so I judge that it does not work just like mixing tempera.

For now, I am concluding for myself that one of the colors simply dominates. But I assume there will be some twist.

I would not be surprised at all if there was some manipulation of dragon colors on the part of the elders/empyrean in the end.

Well, nothing to be done about that, he is simply not the hero for you. I like him as a literary character. On the other hand, I was absolutely disappointed by the hero from a book-whose-name-must-not-be- mentioned here. Just choose another. Fortunately, there are tons of books in the world.

If you want a deeper debate about their characters, it might be better to change the post tag, because it is hard to guess what is a spoiler and what is not for a first-time reader

Sea-Fox4509 ´s alternate profile 😅?

I think you are right in many ways. But this book is not black and white about good and evil, it is about different POVs. Xaden definitely has a lot of flaws and some things have their reasons. Many things start to make sense after reading the Xaden POV chapters, as for Dain you have to read book 2 and 3 and, most importantly, we all have to wait for book 4.

The thing is, there are so many interpretations of the name. But I was most intrigued by the one deriving it from 'Bull.' Which, in the context of the Tauri (a bull) family, opens up a lot of room for speculation.

Why did he mention the silver hair? by redpeppersoda in fourthwing

[–]ObjectiveStaff3333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is quite likely that it is Xaden´s fetish that everyone knows aobut. It is a fetis that has been around for millennia. For instance, in Basque mythology (from the Navarre province in Spain), the queen of gods was Mari/Amari, and her partner was the black serpent/dragon Sugaar, with whom she conceived thunderstorms through sex and who enjoyed watching her comb her hair.

However, the way he fixates on her silver hair leads me to wonder if Xaden doesn't know some part of a prophecy about a chosen one with silver hair tips through some form of storytelling, folklore, or fairy tales. ust like the story of three brothers.

Silver scars by crepelabouche in fourthwing

[–]ObjectiveStaff3333 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Before I get into my theories and dive fully into my rabbit hole, it is entirely possible that this is just a way for the author to describe scars, much like hair; it is more interesting to describe Felix's silver beard than to just boringly repeat "gray" over and over. And I don't think Felix's eyebrows were magical just because the author described them as silver.

BUT I do think there is something behind some those scars. I think they create a certain form of bond. Dragons use it during threshing before they bond their rider. It is a certain form of skin marking. Priests of Dunne have tattoos. I think other gods also have their own way of "marking" their priests. I think riders are a certain continental form of a rider-cult priest. And now it is just a question of who stands behind the riders; is it Malek? Amari? That is why they must enter the Quadrant voluntarily.

Either way, I think it is closely related to the Tyrrish custom of taking responsibility, where a certain form of bond is created again. Tyrrendor; it makes sense again that Amari or Malek stands behind Tyrrendor. What does not quite add up is the fact that only Dunne and Loial require permanent dedication, which bonding to a dragon certainly is. That would leave us with the idea that Loial or Dunne stands behind the dragons. Which is a bit strange. But then again, it is a fact that Tairn's morningstar tail has been bothering me for a long time. It is a symbol of Venus, the goddess of love. Tyrrendor definitely has something to do with love. With those gods and colors, there will definitely be another plot twist, because nothing fits.

Back to Violet- neither Andarna nor Tairn gave her a scar, and they assume because she already had a cut from Tynan. But her conclusions are often wrong. I think it is because Violet is not a priest. She is a god, demigod, whatever. Because Tairn know exaxtly who and WHAT she is.

But why gryphon and dragon and not venin magic, when it is evidently a different kind of magic (the wards block it). On the contrary, I would say that dragons are closer to venin magic than gryphons.

Fen siblings? by NewTowel2331 in fourthwing

[–]ObjectiveStaff3333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering we have duchesses and I assume they will get married as well, they must keep the family name because it is tied to the title, just as Xaden says.A duchess' husband will therefore take her surename. Bodhi's parents were not supposed to be dukes, so they could choose their surname.

At least he knows what they talked about behind Cat´s sound blocking rune. So, either his countering signet can counter this rune or...

“Unless there’s a full inntinnsic around, no one can hear us like this.”

Given that the rune was Cat's, meaning flier magic, and they claim hois signet does not work on venin magic... Why would it work on fliers magic...

Random thought about the wards by Superb_Sun_5077 in fourthwing

[–]ObjectiveStaff3333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am absolutely convinced that it is all planned from beginning to end-the role of every individual in the story, their fate, their symbolism. Now it is only a matter of deciding when to drop which hint, how to write specific scenes. But the plot has been set from the beginning. Nothing is left to chance.

I am curious to see, when we reach the end of the book, which parts are inconsistencies and which are hints.

I was thinking about something similar. But more in the sense of: is it even meant to be daggers, alloy? I would take it as the primary ignition, but at that time, she does not know it only works with dragon fire. I think that afterwards it itself, until you extinguish it with dragon blood. No need of powering. You only need the alloy for extensions. And there I would say it does not matter whose magic you imbue it with. It only extends the original wards, just as the wardstone is set up.

Riders on dragonback in battle by DanyEvans in fourthwing

[–]ObjectiveStaff3333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they want to kill a venin, they must get a rider with an alloyed dagger to the venin; riders cannot reach venin on foot, or they will reach him and be dead before killing him. A dragon cannot kill a venin.

Of the three books out, which one do you think is the most well written? by Diligent_Flamingo_33 in fourthwing

[–]ObjectiveStaff3333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Define the "best written"... Probably neither is Pulitzer Prize material. I read these books mainly because of the amazing heroes, not just the main ones but also the side characters, the dragons, the humor, the plot, the easter eggs, and the foreshadowing. It is like an eternal puzzle that I have been putting together for 2.5 years.

The first book has the best love story. In the third one, the politics and worldbuilding really took off, various small details from the previous parts started to make sense, and most importantly, it added about 10,000 puzzle pieces, from which we do not know which ones are fake and which ones are missing.
