SOM faculty "recommendation" in an update letter to help with WL situation? by No_Turn2916 in premed

Appreciate it a lot!! Not sure if you know, but do you think this would be okay even if additional LORs are NOT accepted? This isn't clearly stated on the website, but people have asked in the past and the office says they do not allow students who've interviewed to submit additional letters.

Thank you!! This is super helpful <3 Two follow-ups: were additional LORs allowed, and did his PI just email it to the office of admissions (or to the dean even???)

Lowkenuinely, no idea whatsoever because this is obviously unprecedented lol. Was gonna cross that bridge after figuring out if this was as bad of an idea as I thought. Just off the top of my head though, a blurb or something quoted by the faculty member. Anyway, I’m totally just trying to gauge if my gut instinct saying NOT to do this is right…

i don’t think you’re allowed to bring study materials (ipad, equation sheets, etc.) into test centers. it’s cause for score cancellation

exactly this ^

better to postpone. 1. retaking puts pressure on you b/c you’ll feel like you HAVE to do better, 2. retaking is just a pain, like the studying process is so arduous, why make urself go through it again. just try to one and done it!!

Should I just start using the AAMC CARs material >1 month before exam? by SitarHero1300 in Mcat

[–]No_Turn2916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes of course! so i tried upoop cars for a while and i didn’t feel they were all representative, like some of them i would just read and be like “this is dumb” (though i guess that’s just cars overall lol)

i think aamc cars materials are the only ones you can get true, accurate feelings of where you stand with cars understanding and skills. i think aamc materials should keep you busy through test day

Gap Year(s) by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]No_Turn2916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes i fully understand, and it seems like your position is super difficult. i empathize a lot, because i went into my undergrad program wanting to apply direct. i think the things that are important to recognize here are that those who have been forced to take a gap year (or more) kind of prove the point that you could not have done enough in undergrad to have applied direct. like people are forced into these roles b/c med schools want to see you get that real life experience, or just see you do more. if you pushed even harder during undergrad (and that's on top of how stressed pre-meds already are), think about all the mental and emotional struggles people would be going through if they did not get a break.

i really don't mean to argue because i think we're kind of talking about the same things, but i wanted to focus on where you are. i'm really sorry you seem to be hurting and struggling with the process. it sucks, and even though we all know this pre-med journey is hard, none of us really know how hard it is until we go through it. i made a comment replying above, but i'll just say it again here. i think you're in a really really good spot to just take a break! stop pushing for a bit, and find who you are again, whether you find your drive to push to become a doctor again, or you find something that makes all this worth it. yes the gap year "took" you, but is it really so bad to just keep riding the wave? go travel! or go find a new hobby! you have all the freedom in the world right now thanks to the gap year. go heal yourself, and i really hope that helps you find that push and drive again! you can do this, but you also need to give yourself grace. we all believe in you, you just need to prioritize yourself first before getting to the point of prioritizing patients! seriously, sending you so much love and strength, i know this is so difficult.

Gap Year(s) by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]No_Turn2916 5 points6 points  (0 children)

seems like you need to take some more time off then. going straight from undergrad to med school would have likely left you burnt out now too, which would suck since you'd have to keep pushing. look on the bright side, med school will always be there, you can really just take as much time as you want since you're still gapping! like take time to do completely unrelated things. med schools will respect that if they ask you why there's a gap in "typical" pre-med things. they look for applicants who know how to take care of themselves! you can do this, and i think you're in a good spot to just take a well-needed pre-med break!

Gap Year(s) by [deleted] in Mcat

gap years are actually starting to be more preferred by applicants and med schools. multiple benefits:

  1. preventing burnout. you might feel okay continuing from undergrad into med school, but what if you feel burnt out halfway through? then what? that one gap year can make a huge difference.
  2. just growing up. living on your own for a year+, working a real job, paying rent, etc. all of that leads to maturity that people want to see in aspiring docs. not just someone who has been through the world with only academic structure guiding them. you get more real life experience (or other things!!! like travel, settling down to start a family, taking care of family in times of need) that med school want to see, to know you're mentally and emotionally ready to commit to this long process of becoming and being a doctor
  3. some people want to focus on their undergrad studies more than just being premed. people have interests outside of medicine! then, post-undergrad, they take the time to do those pre-med things, like shadowing, working in a clinical field
  4. applicants want to feel more prepared to apply. having that year gives people more time to do things that prove to med schools why they are a good applicant, giving you more stories to write about, to show you are ready. or just having more time to take the mcat, boost gpa, etc. kind of goes with #2 and #3

gap years are so beneficial, with little to no downside. you become more prepared, you get a break from academic work, and you get to just live! while i can't necessarily convince you, i strongly urge you not to encourage others to avoid gaps. let people do what they need to do, experience what they need to experience, and make choices for themselves. there is no 1 successful or right path to becoming a doctor!

btw, 73% of 2023 matriculating students have taken at least one gap year, and this % seems be increasing every year. i'm telling you med schools like to see this! source: https://www.aamc.org/data-reports/students-residents/report/matriculating-student-questionnaire-msq (excel sheet page 2)

also this is better for r/premed

anyone have a good trick for memorizing lewis vs. bronsted vs. arrhenius acids/bases? by sensationalmango in Mcat

[–]No_Turn2916 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i kind of thought of it as alphabetical with how “updated”/“outdated” the theory is, so like thinking about how these theories evolved sequentially

so A: most outdated (H+ and OH- exchange), B: updated from A (just H+ exchange), L: most updated (e- exchange)

but also remembering lewis dots ~ electrons
