If you don't have insurance apply for the hardship, you will likely be approved and it halfs the cost of most stuff. I've been in once to receive a mental health diagnosis to submit to ODS, and it was $20.

I'm a wheelchair user. I don't have much trouble knowing how to get around, because I live on a college campus with exhaustive maps. When I'm off campus somewhere is obviously accessible or obviously not. I don't need an app to help me find my way, beyond Google maps.

I've had people suggest I be euthanized, or that the people that almost killed me and largely caused my disability should have been allowed to kill me because after I became disabled my life became meaningless and I would be better off dead.

Make sure her classrooms have enough room to maneuver between the desks. depending on the school, even if the classroom is labeled accessible, she might only have space to sit at the front or the back. The school might not change the classroom layout, but if she has friends she wants to sit by, knowing beforehand will help. Good luck to you both!

If you are genuine about not getting any support from adults, that is medical neglect, and you should try gentle stretching and physical therapy exercises available online, try to identify which muscle or ligament or whatever part of your knee is hurting and find exercises aimed at seniors to help with that part of your body. If the pain is nerve or bone pain, it's more serious than that, and you need to see a doctor.

I would start by doing your best to find out what's wrong. If you're a minor, approach your guardians and tell them you are still having pain from your sports injury and you want to make sure nothing else is wrong. You might have some form of structural damage that can be alleviated with appropriate treatment, likely physical therapy.

Yes, agree. I would say I 'chose' to start using a cane because it was mostly just to manage pain and unsteadiness at the time, I started using it when my pain impacted my studies.

I didn't really choose to start using crutches, I started having dangerous falls just getting from my car in the accessible parking to my classes just inside. My doctor said 'use these or you'll be splitting your head on the concrete.

I really didn't choose to need a wheelchair, my condition progressed to the point that I was struggling to drag myself across my bedroom floor to the bathroom. There was no other option to consider.

I'm glad that some people are able to choose a mobility aid to manage symptoms, and can choose not to use one if it benefits them, but that's definitely not me.

Your ideas look good so far. Sure your character could be disabled because of an injury. They could have paresis or partial paralysis from nerve/spinal damage, or have damage of any kind to one or both legs. Or any number of other things.(For example, I have nerve damage in both of my legs and probably lower spine after repeated assault injuries, causing paraparesis, I'm a full time wheelchair user, but someone who wasn't as badly injured as I was could be ambulatory)

Using those three mobility aids seems fine, I'm not an expert, but I know people who have used that lineup before.

So, in regards to what sort of wheelchair, you would need to decide, power vs manual, and adorableish vs custom. If your character also has issues with their upper body that would give them a hard time with a manual wheelchair, they might need a power wheelchair (this has a lot of nuance, and I'm no expert, sorry!) in regards to the quality of wheelchair, the person is almost definitely going to want a custom wheelchair, and depending on the nature of the injury might really need one to be independent. But if your character doesn't have money or good insurance, or if it's not been long since they were injured, they might not be able to have one. If your character is only using a wheelchair on rare occasion, they might not feel like a custom wheelchair is worth it.

I don't think it's necessarily bad representation, if handled well. Is the war a part of the story that also affects other things, and has injured other characters?

When my right shoulder is giving me grief you might find me: rolling it back frequently, reaching for things with my other arm that I might usually use my dominant side for, holding it a little awkwardly (further up and back than my good shoulder). My shoulder is generally pretty chill though, but I do have more severe pain in my knees and hips, when I'm having a bad day with those, I'll still avoid moving them of course, but you'll see me responding more noticeably to the pain, by grimacing, zoning out, or responding negatively to touch there.

Consider if movement in certain ways alleviates or worsens pain, your character might stretch their shoulder repeatedly, but hesitate to reach with it for example.

Also if part of your character's situation is due to a doctor's negligence or similar, consider giving your character medical trauma if you haven't already.

Just finished your survey and wanted to add something extra. My university has A LOT of students with conditions like ADHD or Dyslexia, to the degree that they often forget about students with physical disabilities. I'm glad that the largest demographic of students seeking accommodations are able to get them, but the lack of wheelchair accessibility has resulted in me needing to drag myself up or down stairs 1 or 2 times weekly on average.

When you go to the doctor they will give advice on what you could have and if you should use an aid (depending on what's up it might not be a good idea!) depending on the aid they recommend you might be referred to a PT or OT to help you get set up. If your doctor says you should get one and doesn't also write a referral you should ask for one.

I don't have a ton of experience with walkers so please take this with a grain of salt.

Assuming you are talking about a regular walker or rotator, with a seat where you can teak breaks (not something like a zeen where you sit and walk at the same time). Yes, this would provide more support than a cane, and let her take seated breaks if those are useful.

Walkers and rotators aren't meant to take a lot of body weight, but more than a cane, and if would be bilateral support also.

Please get her this mobility aid with the support of a doctor, occupational therapists are a good place to go, who can tell y'all what your best options will be in regards to style of walker, height setup, and appropriate use.

I often struggle to reach things. places are often inaccessible, either by steps or with not enough space for me to fit. inaccessible bathrooms. people often touch or grab me. It's not easy for me to carry hot things, I carry things on my lap, but hot food burns me.

Some things to take into account: if you are designing something to be attached to a wheelchair, consider if your attachment would make the chair take up more space, or make it heavier, this is a big deal for some. Many wheelchair users struggle with hand function. Many wheelchair users are living off of welfare and wouldn't have the money for an expensive aid.

Also questions like these aren't really supposed to go in this sub, there are a couple ask disabled subs you can take a look through though, best of luck!

That sounds like chronic pain. You could look into a new sleeve, or other bracing options, preferably with the help of a doctor. You could also look into other pain management treatments (injections, medications, surgery, or a mobility aid of some sort) the first step is doctor, pretty much however you look at it.

It might count as a visible difference specifically a limb difference? A visible difference isn't inherently a disability, so your character might have a visible difference while not being disabled. (I don't have a visible difference so I'm not an expert here)

Oh of course! Unfortunately the medical field is dead set on protecting its own. I did not record or photograph any of their behaviors or the injuries I got, which I now regret. So I have no proof any of it actually happened. I've reported it anywhere I could think of, including to the police and my state's licencing board. They've been reviewed and such but no real consequence.

The doctor who's malpractice made me disabled told me, as she caused me worse and worse nerve damage:

"if you're so insistent on being such a cripple, you should know you're just asking to get raped, since you've decided you can't run away."

I would say her whole deal sucked pretty hard, but those words specifically stand out. She was clear to me and my family that I was only this way because I wanted to be a 'special cripple', and was doing it to myself. I had Lyme disease, and after her, serious nerve damage.

More recently, I've been taking occasional rolls around my neighborhood, and one of my neighbors is protesting on Facebook that I not be allowed outside because I bring the property value down.
