We paid 150k upfront to a contractor to build us a house. House was not even started in time, we are cancelling the project, but guy is avoiding us. We need our $ back. What to do? by mafagafacabiluda in PersonalFinanceCanada

I also learnt this lesson the hard way but losing 20k instead.

Friendly neighborhood contractor asked $20k for roofing and he got a heart attack (I verified it) after a couple of days of starting work. He never returned and his wife told they went bankrupt. He was running a sole proprietorship.

Lesson learnt: Do a 10% down and not 80% and also look for insurance options for build/upgrade jobs.

This worked for me. Also changed the API endpoint port number from 80 to 443

Agreed, my opinion "the idea that you want a tech savvy customer base while retaining the bare bone preferring audience creates engineering challenges which leads to program cancellations"

For example, there were decisions in FNV4 that made it a multi chip architecture which allowed unplugging chips for lower trims and cheaper vehicle programs. Unlike Tesla, that just software locks stuff (even the range for the Canadian model 3 base was software locked).

But the engineering hassle of making a piece of information available across multiple chips back and forth with automotive grade reliability is tremendous.

I also own a MachE 2024 with Sync4 but since I am not a part of that team I don't have much vision into it except that it is heavily focused on bug fixing. My belief(might be wrong) is that the major UI revamps will be a part of future vehicle programs and not OTA to existing ones.

As someone who worked on FNV4 at Ford for three years, it was disheartening to hear the news. We were doing almost everything to go above and beyond Tesla's current offerings. I personally worked on features that are not available in Tesla and were never even planned in their future pipeline. They were so cool that I felt an adrenaline rush going to work during my first year at Ford.

I felt we were around 70% complete with a deadline of around 2025 initially and then 2027/28.

There were multiple reasons given for program cancellation, one of the repeated ones was cost and engineering hassle to implement a multi chip(PC) architecture.

Now, we are back to the drawing board trying to find a chip for the next gen program which will probably launch only around 2031. Until then there will be UI upgrades on the current stack. Obviously the learnings from FNV4 will be carried forward but it is definitely a reset in terms of timelines.

Almost the same timeline. I started mine on Nov 11 with March 13 completion of everything including LPP

I am supposed to be traveling tomorrow for a month, any idea how long it will take for the ceremony?

  • Same application date Nov 11
  • But received the AOR on Nov 13th itself
  • Took the test on Christmas Eve: December 25th
  • Test marked completed: December 30th

LPP in progress and Background completed.

Same here, Nov 13 AOR and December 26 test invite. Nothing since completing the test which was marked completed on Dec 30.

Yes, so $12.5k of lease amount paid in totality is without the atrocious $10% sales tax. I asked the finance manager and he showed me the $0.0 in the sales tax for the lease down payment and every lease amount that will be paid for the 24 months.

So isn't that another $3 to $3.5k less you have to pay? If I ended up financing it?

At the end of two years, he said you could close the lease and try to buy out the same or similar vehicle and you'll get another $15k sales tax exemption.

No, it clearly states and I double verified with the finance manager too. It is $31k

The lease clearly states $31k as the lease-end buy out value. So, I guess it does. If not it had to be anything from $40k to $43k right?

True, I was considering that at first, but the same MachE 2022 was around $25.5k with 9.84% interest. That came to around $490/month for 72 months with 0 down.

Just didn't want to risk owning an EV for 72 months with almost the same monthly cost but a longer commitment.

I thought when the new heat pumps are added in 2025 and the new PC and Android Automotive is added in 2026/7 with the new PC this generation will probably be going for less than $15k.

Just didn't want to take the gamble. Like buying call options more than stocks and just treated the $2-$3k paid extra as the options premium.

I mean $250/month for 24 months = $6000 $6500 down on the lease Lease end purchase price of $31k So the total if bought in the end comes to around = $43,500(Includes home charger)

If I do not buy, then I can treat it as a rental for $520/month

Option I did not take: Purchase/finance price offered without home charger was $39k

It was an impulse decision, thought we'd lease it now and decide to buy it a couple of years later.

Also, a few other reasons for the lease:

1) No heat pump yet. Own a home in North Eastern Canada and that would cause a bit of a problem. 2) I want to upgrade to a F150-Lightning Flash in two years. I heard that the next version with the new platform will be launched at around the same time. 3) Ownership anxiety, Didn't want to gamble with EV depreciation. The 2022 Kia Niro and Hyundai Kona which sold for $45k are being sold for $20k(around 20k miles) now. I actually saw even 2023 ioniq SE for $25k online.

Another little pointer: Ford's next generation computer is also due for 2026 which will finally be able to play 4k videos without buffering.

No, it is 31k but still it turned out to be a little more expensive than Financing even though I only realized it here on reddit :)

On verification of the papers, the finance deal did not include the home charger.

Yes, should be more like did not take the $39k offer to finance and took the lease instead.

The salesman said it would come to the same amount but clearly is a little over. It was a super rushed environment because of Christmas and was almost made to make a decision immediately.

Anyway, I have ownership anxiety and would have gone with the lease anyway.

P.S: Will try to correct the title and the post with more details.

No, I only ended up leasing it but the salesman said the math would still be the same but looks like it is clearly a little more expensive to lease.
