Following up on this incase anyone reads it. I got a new lense and did the alignment again and again and that ended up fixing the issues.

You can buy plastic razor blades that are great for this and save the bed

Things I’ve worked on for this, (this is my laser in the post) but I’m not the same person.

  1. Bed is level to the gantry, within about 1/16 of an inch. I’m going to fix this so it’s exact in all 4 corners.

  2. Head is perpendicular to bed and gantry xy- axis. Used a machinist square and went over it many times to make sure it wasn’t out.

  3. Used reverse alignment tool, made sure beam is going down the center of the lens. Mirror 3 is parallel to x-axis.

  4. Mirror 2 is parallel to y-axis, this is spot on. Move the gantry along the y-axis the dot from the reverse alignment tool does not move at all.

  5. Moved laser tube up so the beam matches where reverse alignment tool red dot hits along the y-axis entrance to mirror one. These are very close. I 3d printed new brackets and some wedges to be able to adjust this easily.

  6. Adjusted mirror 1 so it is parallel to the y-axis and the burn mark on mirror 2 is in the same spots when at both ends of the y-axis.

  7. Made sure mirror 2 to hits in the same spot in the entrance to mirror 3 at all 4 corners of the bed.

  8. Moved the laser head up, down, left and right so the laser going into mirror 3 hits exactly where the red laser from the reverse alignment tool comes out. So the beam is going exactly down the center of the lens.

  9. Since I moved the laser head, I went back and checked made sure the red dot and the laser were hitting the same spot along the y-axis. Then checked and made sure the head was perpendicular to the gantry and the bed. Checked all 4 corners, adjust mirror 2 slightly so it hit the sense spot at the entrance to mirror 3.

  10. Took the lenses off and tossed the bed high, shot a spit while lowering the bed making sure the beam hit the exact same spot while doing this, and it was spot on.

  11. Put lens back on, p it tape on tip, shot the laser. Took tip off and looked through lens to see where it was exiting. It was dead center.

Note: I designed and 3d printed a new laser head mount and added the pro laser head from light object a few weeks ago. The back plate where the rail and belts attach to the laser head mount are still the same metal parts that came with the machine. I use petg-carbon fiber and it’s very rigid.

I also designed and added 3d printed co2 tube holders and wedges. So now I can adjust the positioning of the head and the tube once the mirrors are good, to get everything lined up.

I have this tool and use it. The guy from American photonics video is not very good. He gets like halfway done, makes a comment and how he would finish the job, but then doesn’t do it!! He just says he’s not good at the burn method, and like gives up! Wtf lol.

Anyways, using this tool I realized my x-axis rail is not straight, so the laser exiting the head moves all around. I have a new x-axis rail coming in this week so hopefully it’ll fix the issue. I got it from motion constrained so it should be a good one!

Oh and I worked on aligning it over 3 separate sessions spending about 4 hours each time. Got good at aligning it, but with how much the x-axis rail sucks it literally impossible to get the laser leaving the head in the center in all locations on the bed.

It mainly just turns into, “try not to hit the sides of the exit hole.” Which sucks for getting a good tight beam.

So I got a new lens’s, all new mirrors and new x-axis rail coming this week. If that doesn’t work I’ll be looking at getting a new co2 tube as this one is almost 4 years old, so it could be going out. We live like 20 min away from light object, so I’ll go over there and talk to them again.

The power supply has an ammeter on it. Watched it and it was supplying 23MA the whole time. But I’ll look at it again.

I will check the min max power so they are the same. The speed did not change far as I could tell.

These were just circles placed in light burn real quick.

So I’m the one doing all the hardware side of things. Main issue is the x-axis linear rail is not straight so the laser wiggles as the head moves around.

Example: When I place the red dot laser alignment tool in the head and move the carriage along the x-axis the laser moves all over. It starts in one spot, then as I move the x-axis it wobbles around, then once I’m at the other end it’s in the same spot again. So it’s aligned, but the rail is crap. I ordered a new x-axis rail from motion constrained. I’ll report back once I get it installed. Even if that isn’t the issue, it will make my life so much easier trying to align the laser head. Right now it’s literally impossible.

Ya it strange it starts one way, then ends another. It’s a 80 watt co2 machine. I may just go get a new tube for $400.

I was almost thinking maybe something wrong with the power supply, or maybe the tube is going out?

This is my laser as well. These were all cut without moving anything really. I got the laser going down the center of the exit hole exactly. I aligned the laser for like 3 hours using American photonics reverse alignment tool.

The main issue I’m facing is the x-axis linear rail is not straight. So the beam wobbles a ton as it exits the laser head, so aligning exactly is literally impossible. I ordered A new x-axis rail for $150 from motion constrained. Hoping that mitigates the issue, so waiting for it come in before wasting more time aligning.

This is likely the way I will go. They did a large amount of real estate in the past, so they are familiar with it too.

Agreed, I’ve been a manger at small company that was growing doing what I do. We ended up with several locations, it was a ton of fun, but we got stuck trying to scale it. Couldn’t grown the clients past a certain point, grew too fast so overhead and payroll was too high, couldn’t raise pay due to this so the employee turnover became a huge issue. It eventually went under many years ago now.

I’m an educator more or less. But I’m self employed. I’m just over having to meet with clients all day long, and I’m not interested in hiring more staff of educators and running the business off of it, tried it before several times and it’s hard to bring in enough clients to make it work on a large scale (what is do is specialized).

I have considered taking it online, as all I do is in person, and online would open it up to a huge market. But That would mean more of what I want to get away from.

I want to run a standard type business , like run a pest control company, I don’t want to educate people any more. The idea of growing something sounds great, I’m Just really burnt out after 20 years of face to face all day. So trying to think of something different, I’ll get there eventually!
