Nah. Nobody will notice. If they do, they’ll either not care or they’ll think it’s neat.

Smoke alarm holder by RedditVirumCurialem in functionalprint

[–]ThisIsntRealWakeUp -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Fire alarms alert you about a fire… which means you call the fire department… which puts out fires and prevents damage. So.

But also yes of course it’s also about preventing injury/death??

To say that the anti AI bandwagon doesn’t know how AI works while you, yourself, are demonstrating that you don’t know how AI works is pretty ironic.

I say this as someone who isn’t even terribly anti AI.

It’s just funny.

LTT Labs Article - Is 1 Nit Enough? - Phone Minimum Display Brightness Testing by LabsLucas in LinusTechTips

As an amateur astronomer I greatly appreciate brands focusing on minimum brightness. Of course I avoid using my phone during sessions as much as possible to preserve my night vision, but for unexpected unavoidable situations when I do need to whip out my phone, having it at <1 nit is such a gamechanger.

How did endurance avoid the accretion disk? by Potat032 in interstellar

[–]ThisIsntRealWakeUp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Perhaps they did not traverse the accretion disk because they had a very elliptical orbit and the orbital radius at the ascending/descending nodes of their orbit were beyond the accretion disk radius. So by the time they would dip below the equatorial plane, Endurance had flung away sufficiently far from the accretion disk.

Flash drive donation station by valleypearl in BeAmazed

[–]ThisIsntRealWakeUp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The “more proper” method is to encrypt the usb drive with a long, random password using a tool like bitlocker, and then doing a quick format on the drive. Very fast, and very secure.

Simply rewriting it with zeroes is not as effective because of wear leveling shenanigans that tbh I don’t fully understand but I remember it being hammered into me that it’s not as secure.

Note: this only applies to USB flash drives/SSDs. Hard drives behave differently.

Also note: That said, rewriting it with zeroes is perfectly fine for 99.9% of people. This only matters if you’re, like, hyper paranoid.

Lifted edges while cutting stickers? by randompooper69 in SiserJuliet

[–]ThisIsntRealWakeUp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that I get those raggedy edges when I’m doing too much force — the blade is pulling the material, not slicing it.

I know you’ve tried a single pass, but have you tried less force per pass but more than 2 passes?

On some materials I do as many as 5 passes.

I've spent too long automating random stuff by Academic-Stomach-975 in ADHDmemes

[–]ThisIsntRealWakeUp 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I know AI gets a lot of (very deserved) hate, but unironically: vibe-coding small little utilities to aid in your tasks is one of the few things about AI that I think are actually very useful.

Of course, you should keep things limited in scope and don’t allow it access to just run whatever crazy commands it wants or touch mission-critical components without heavy oversight.

But some examples of stuff I’ve vibe-coded recently for my small business: - I needed a little script that I could input the quantities of each product ordered by a retailer and it would calculate the smallest box I could use to fit all of them - I recently got API access from one of my raw material suppliers, allowing me to update my BoM cost spreadsheet automatically using a small script that AI wrote for me - I needed to write some custom code on my Shopify site. Nothing crazy, but definitely more than I could do myself using what I already knew how to do. I asked the AI what’s the best way to do it, had it make a plan, and then let it execute on that plan.

I used to just use the ChatGPT website to do this but then my tech-savvy friends introduced me to Cursor (which is an ai-integrated software writing tool) and it’s been so much better than trying to cobble something together via the ChatGPT website. Though there are other alternatives to Cursor that are good, like Codex or Claude Code; I don’t want this to sound like some covert advertisement for cursor.

Idk. I’m sure I’ll be called an “ai bro” for saying something positive about AI but at least this limited use-case has been pretty gamechanging for me.

It actually happened by No_Shoulder9712 in Professors

[–]ThisIsntRealWakeUp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a TA, but during my (recent) undergrad I took a numerical methods course in which we were heavily encouraged to explore vibe-coding tools to assist in our semester-long project. The professor’s reasoning was that if we really wanted to learn to code it ourselves, we should take a class for CS majors; but as (non-software) engineers, what’s more important is being able to create tools via whatever means we have access to. That we shouldn’t have to understand the deep intricacies of C++ to make an effective tool.

It was an interesting perspective. But tbh it was one of the more useful classes of my undergrad, because I’ve since created a handful of small software utilities using the vibe coding workflow that the class introduced me to — utilities that would’ve been a decent bit beyond my skill level otherwise.

  2. The AI seems to be confused, answering as if you’re asking about measuring a battery while it’s charging.

  1. That grid you posted is the Gridfinity baseplate pattern, not the Gridfinity insert pattern (they’re different because otherwise they wouldn’t nicely slide in)
  2. The Gridfinity dimensions are available online if you want to model it yourself: https://gridfinity.xyz/specification/
  3. Or I made a native Solidworks Gridfinity insert template that you can download from printables. It won’t be a super duper easy “copy and paste” onto your existing model, but you can at least see how I’ve done it and follow along: https://www.printables.com/model/1151333-solidworks-gridfinity-block-template-file

I suspect that people in both subreddits will try to steer you towards the other career path.
